1 Claim.

This invention relates to covered receptacles and more particularly covered disposal units.

The object of the invention is to provide a simplified sanitary portable disposal unit which can be simply and effectvely sealed and easily transported.

The invention generally stated resides in an arrangement for securely and efiiciently locking a cover to a disposal unit, the locking handle of the cover locking arrangement afiording a convenient carrying handle for the unit.

More specifically stated the. invention comprises a cover having a flexible peripheral sealing strip and a locking arrangement including a handle adapted to engage the unit at a plurality of points to securely lock the cover to the unit and force the peripheral strip into contact with the unit to provide an effective seal between the cover and the unit.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds.

While one embodiment of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that such embodiment merely serves as an illustration of the underlying principles of the invention so that it may be readily comprehended by those skilled in the art, and is not intended as limiting the invention to the specific details disclosed therein.

Continuing now by way of a more detailed description, an irregularly shaped conventional receptacle or bed pan A has an opening 13. A cover C conforming in shape to that of the top surface of the receptacle or pan and openin B has a peripheral or marginal sealing strip D which preferably consists of a flexible material so as to insure a tight seal when the cover is looked under pressure to the receptacle. In the specific embodiment illustrated in the drawings the peripheral edges of the cover are embedded in the sealing strip although other arrangements may be used to secure the sealing strip to the cover. In order to lock the cover C to the receptacle A and completely seal the opening thereof a rotatable handle E has a dependent shaft F passing through a suitable opening in the cover A. A portion of the shank of shaft F is squared to non-rotatably secure a pair of discs H to the shaft. In order to hold the discs in position on the squared portion of the shaft the lower end of the latter is threaded to receive a lock nut H A plurality of locking arms radially extend outwardly from the shaft F with their inner ends pivotally pinned by pins K to the discs H. On rotation of shaft F by handle E the outwardly extending locking arms are extended or retracted. The outwardly extending ends of the locking arms are guided by the guide strips L secured to the lower face of the cover C in any convenient manner and so that the arms may slide freely therein. A ticket clip M is provided on the top surface of the cover for holding a ticket when the receptacle is used in hospitals and an analysis is to be made.

It will be noted that the arrangement is particularly useful where large quantities of the receptacles have to be transported as is the case in hospitals and other similar institutions. The cover locking arrangement insures proper sealing, the locking handle providing a convenient means for carrying the receptacle and serving to retract and extend the arms for locking the cover to the receptacle and pressing the peripheral seal tightly against the receptacle.

It will also be observed that the arrangement illustrated lends itself to the sealing of different types of receptacles by slight modification of the cover. The cover might for instance be extended so as to seal more than one opening.

It is claimed:

A disposal unit comprising a receptacle having an irregular opening, a completely separable nonrotatable cover for the receptacle conforming to said irregular opening and having a flexible peripheral seal on one face thereof and means including a handle for carrying the unit, a rotatable shaft secured to the handle and passing through the cover, a pair of spaced discs secured to the shaft and a plurality of radially extending locking members each having one end pinned to one of the discs for locking the cover to the receptacle to seal the receptacle opening on rotational movement of the carrying handle and the other end bent for engaging the receptacle and limiting the movement of the locking members.
