UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICEC JOHN F. BROWN, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO OXLEY & GIDDINGS, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y.
SUSPENSION-SLIDE FOR CHANDELIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,860, dated July 13, 1880.
Application filed February 16, 1880. i
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. BROWN, of
1 Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Suspension-Slides for Chandeliers, of which the following is a specification.
Suspension-slides for chandeliers have been made with two tubes and friction-clamps around the inner tube. In some cases the frictionclamps have been actuated by toggle-levers, and the outer ends of such levers rested against the inside of a round case. This case is liable to be bent by the pressure. In other instances the clamps have had wedges at their outer surfaces coming into contact with toothed rollers, and in other cases levers have been used, acting at one end against the clamps and resting at the other ends upon a cone. In these cases the frictionupon the devices that moved the clamps rendered their action irregular. An adjusting-screw has been used below the clamps.
In my improvement I combine with the tube, friction-clamps, and adjusting-screw, a pair of toggle-levers pivoted between two plates that cross-at the sides of the friction-clamps, and
the toggle-levers rest at their outer ends upon the inside of an inclosing-case.
By this construction the weight of the parts is taken upon the outer ends of the togglelevers, tooause them to actuate the clamps, and there is but little friction upon the pivots of the levers, and the plates which connect the levers are not liable to be bent by the strain to which they are subjected.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the suspension-slide, and Fig. 2 ma sectional plan at the line as w. I The chandelier-tube a has at its lower end the two-part ornamental case b 0, and the tube d slides throughacentral opening in the case 0, and passes up and down Within the tube a. The chandelier is of any desired character and is connected with the tube d.
Around the tube 01, and within the case b a, there are two frictional clamps, h h, preferably lined with leather, felt, or similar material, where they come into contact with the surface pins 0 0 of these toggle-levers pass through the two plates is that are at each side of the clamps h h, and connect the pivot-pins o o and hold the clamps and levers in their proper relative positions.
. The outer ends of the toggle-levers it rest upon the inner surface of the case 0, and support the weight of the chandelier, and apply a force to the holding'clamps h h that will produce sufficientfriction to suspend the tube 01 and chandelier. The friction may be lessened by screwing up the adjusting-tube f against the under side of the clamps h, to regulate the force required in drawing the tube 61 down between the friction-clamps, as next described.
Upon the upper end of this adjusting-tube f rest the lower surfaces of the clampingblocks h h, and this tube arrests their downward movement, and according to the extent of that downward movement so the clamping action of the blocks h h will be more or less, and the friction can thereby be adjusted to whatever extent is necessary for holding the chandelier-slide sufficiently firm to support the same in any position to which it may be moved.
I claim as my invention- In combination with the tubes a d, case 0,
clamping-blocks h h, and adjusting-screw f, the toggle-levers it, the plates h h, at each side of the clamping-blocks, and the pivot-s o 0, for the levers t, passing through and connecting the plates: 70, said parts being within and independent of the case 0, except that the outer ends of the levers 2' rest upon the inside of the case 0 and are supported thereby, substantially as setforth.
Signed by me this 12th day of February, A. D. 1880.
JOHN F. BROWN.
