Application June 4, 1940, Serial No. 338,777
1 Claim.
This invention relates to light reflecting signs and more particularly to a light reflecting device preferably for use at roads or paths in parks, gardens or the like.
Devices of this kind already known are cumbersome and. heavy and disturb the aesthetic eifect of the surrounding landscape. These devices are equipped with the usual reflectors known as reflector buttons or cats-eyes fixed on a plate.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a light reflecting sign employing the conventional cats-eye and being constructed in a decorative and aesthetic manner as to conform said sign in harmony with the surrounding landscape.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a sign of the above nature including said reflector button in a floral decoration, said reflector button forming part of a blossom preferably as a simulated stamen or similar center portion of said blossom.
It is another object of the present invention to provide fastening means for said reflector button, said means forming parts of the petals of said floral decoration.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide such a sign with reflecting faces coacting with said reflector button or cats-eye and simultaneously forming said petals.
Yet, another object of the present invention is to mount said sign on a road simulating a stem or branch of a flower and provided with tapered or pointed end to readily stick the same into the ground, particularly adjacent the curb of a driveway.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following disclosure thereof together with the attached drawing which illustrates certain forms of embodiments thereof. These forms are shown for the purpose of illustrating the invention since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various parts of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the use of an embodiment of the invention at a driveway, the reflecting device receiving light rays from the lamps of a motor vehicle;
preferably circular rod l0.
Fig. 2 shows a front view of a reflecting sign made in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 3 is a side sectional view of the upper part of the sign drawn to an enlarged scale;
Fig. 4 shows the use of two reflecting signs oppositely mounted on a rod;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank forming a petal structure employed in the invention.
Referring to the drawing, there are disclosed examples by which the invention may be realized.
In Fig. 2, there is shown a rod or bar l0 having decorative parts I I, I2, simulating leaves, the rod l0 simulating the stem or branch therefor. One end of said rod is tapered for insertion thereof into the ground adjacent a curb of a driveway, as it is illustrated in Fig. 1. At the other end of said rod, there is fixedly disposed a flowershaped portion comprising petal sections l3 which may be integrally formed to provide a unitary structure I4 receiving preferably in the center thereof a cat's-eye l5. Said cats-eye is preferably secured to said structure by means of prongs or lugs l6 struck out of the material of said structure I4 and bent over to engage the rim I! of said cats-eye IS. The said structure may be differently shaped to conform with the petal sections or parts of any known flower and may be preferably cupped to provide centering of said cats-eye relatively thereto and also to facilitate and increase reflective qualities of said cats-eye.
The structure [4 can be readily stamped out and formed of sheet material and soldered or otherwise secured to the flattened end l8 of the The blank structure la is shown in Fig. 5, having the petal parts l3a and prongs l6.
Fig. 4 shows a modified form of a light reflecting sign made in accordance with the invention. Rod II] is provided at one end thereof with oppositely arranged reflecting signs l4b in form of flower parts having the petals I312 and the catseyes l5a, l5b.
This latter dual reflecting device may be advantageously employed at a point, say in a driveway, where driving takes place in both directions, as for example adjacent garages and garage doors. By suitably disposing the dual reflectmg signs in relative and angular relation on the rod or stem l0 it may be employed at points of intersecting driveways.
It is to be understood that the stem l0 and the leaves ll, l2 may be suitably painted and the flower or blossom part may receive a suitable contrasting and bright coating or paint (indicated by shading in Figs. 2' and 3) which serves the purpose of matching the coloring of the selected flower blossom and of improving the reflecting efiect of the reflector element [5. The petals may be further provided with folds or creases l9 forming additional reflecting faces.
From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described possessing the particular features of advantages before enumerated as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportions, detail construction and arrangement of parts without departing from Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
A light reflecting device of the character described comprising a rod having a tapered end, a substantially cup-shaped member secured at the other end of said rod, said member being a floral decoration and comprising a plurality of petallike sections providing reflecting faces, said sections having creases increasing the reflecting surface of said sections, a reflector button, and means forming part of said member securing said button centrally of said member.
