UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. SNELL, OF RUSHFORD, MINNESOTA.
INVALID-BED.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 229,559, dated July 6, 1880.
Application filed April 8, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. W. SNELL, of Bushford, county of Fillmore, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Invalid-Bed; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists in a special construction and arrangement of parts by means of which the head portion of a bed can be easily raised or lowered when desired, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure lrepresents a plan view of my improved bed; Fig. 2, a partial side elevation of the mechanism for moving and holding the head portion, enlarged; and Fig. 3, a side elevation of the bed, the head portion being shown in its raised position.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and properly use myimproved bed, I will now proceed to describe fully the construction of the same and the manner of its operation.
A, Figs. 1 and 3. represents the main or body portion of the frame, constructed in any proper manner; and B is the head portion, which is pivoted to the body portion by means of a pin extending through the strap or bar 0, hereinafter referred to.
a a b b represent slats located near the end of each portion, as shown.
Upon the entire frame is stretched any suit able wire mattress, as shown.
0, Figs. 1 and 3, represents the strap or bar before referred to, which is bent into the form of a clevis, as shown, and is secured by bolts at its ends to the front ends of the body portion of the frame.
The side arms of the head portion, when in their downward position, rest in the space between the sides of the strap 0, as shown.
crepresents a spring-catch upon the strap 0, by means of which the head portion may be locked in its downward position when desired.
D, Fig. 3, represents a bar rigidly attached at one end to one of the side bars of the head portion of the frame, and pivoted at the other to one end of a connecting-bar, d, by means of which latter it is united to the curved handbar d, as shown.
(No model.)
d Figs. 2 and 3, represents a hook or bent rod, by means of which the outer end of bar d is united to the rack bar 61 Fig. 2, as shown.
01 Fig. 2, represents a link-bar, pivoted at one end to one of the side bars of the main portion of the frame and at the other to the bars (I d at the point of union with each other, d.
61 Fig. 2, represents the rack-bar before referred to, which is provided with a series of teeth adapted to engage with the tooth d of the pawl-lever d, as shown.
The operation is substantially as follows: When a person of ordinary weight-say one hundred pounds-occupies the bed, and the head portion is held in its downward position by the catches c, the same may be caused to rise by simply disengaging these catches, the upward movement of the head being caused by the weight of the occupant.
When a lighter person occupies the bed the raising of the head is facilitated by pulling slightly on the hand-bar d, the catch-lever 01" being disengaged.
The bed may be straightened by simply pressing backward with the head, or by moving the hand-bar toward the foot of the bed.
The catch-lever serves to retain the head portion in any desired position.
By means of this simple construction a very effective device for the desired purpose is obtained.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the pivoted head portion B and the hand-bar, pawl-lever, and rack-bar, the intermediate connecting devices, substantially as described, uniting the handbar to the head portion.
2. 'In combination with the pivoted head portion B, the bars D d d, link d rack-bard and pawl-lever d, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 3d day. of 'April, 1880.-
WILLIAM W. SNELL.
