control unit in which friction surfaces may be conveniently'arranged of suitable size for application to various forms of railway equipment l and, to that end, -I have arranged my device so that it may readily be applied to various types of railway car trucks. y
My invention comprises a novel arrangement of friction casing suitably constructed for mountingon a frame member of a railway car truck and a shoe 'carrier supported in said casing and arranged for connection to a relatively movable frame member. v
My invention contemplates an arrangement wherein a control unit casing may be secured to one truck frame member and an actuating bar secured to a. relatively movable truck frame member with said actuating bar comprising an end portion on which may be carried friction shoes and resilient means for engagement with friction walls on said housing.
A different object of my invention is to ldevise a novel control unit such as described comprising a' friction casing, a shoe carrier supported therein, and a plurality oi' friction shoes interdevice substantially as indicated by the line 4--4` of Figure l. y

Figure 8 is a sectional view through a modiiication of the device, said view corresponding in general to that of Figure 2 but diering therefrom in that the actuating arm and shoe carrier are formed as a single member.
Describing the control unit in detail, it may te noted that it comprises a friction casing 2 including spaced front and rear walls .l and 6, said rear wall 6 being extended beyond the top and integral lugs I2 and i6 with central openings I 6 as convenient'means of `connection to a frame member. As illustrated, the casing'ris shown as' a built-up structure, the back wall 6 being shown as a plate and the front and top and bottom walls as a separate plate formed to shape and welded to the back plate. This casing maybe formed as a cast structure, if desired., Centrally positioned within the casing is. a shoe supporting member or carrier 2li of rectangular form f having the central slot or opening 22 for reception of an actuating memberv 24 which-may be connected to a frame member which is relatively movable with respect to the rstinentioned frame member to which the casing may be connected. As shown in Figure 8, the control unit 2 is illustrated as applied to the outboard face of the side frame but its position may bottom of said be reversed, if desired. so that the control unit will be mounted within the inboard and outboard planes defining the opposite faces of the frame member as illustrated ln Figure 7. In this position of mounting, the actuating bar ile will extend through the adjacent columns into the bolster opening for connection to the bolster or load carrying member which is supported for relative movement with respect to the side frame.
The modification shown in Figure 8 differs from that shown in Figure 2 only in that the shoe carrier and control bar or actuating means are shown integral as a one-piece structure designatedv |20. 2. A control unit for connection between relatively movable members of a railway car truck comprising a casing for support from one of said members, and actuating means for connection to the other of said members, said casing having spaced internal friction faces. -a shoe carrier,`
