Description

WILLIAM HUEY, OF CHRISTIANA,.PENNSYLVANIA.
` ,ELEVATOR FOR `VtIlSl'IDOWfSASI-IIES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,954, dated February`15, 11859-.
. being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a vertical central section of a window with my invention applied to it. x, a?, Fig. 2, indicates the plane of section. Fig. 2, is also a vertical section of ditto, taken in the line m Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The invention is designed to facilitate the raising and lowering of the sashes and supersede weights and similar appliances that have been previously used for the same pur` ose.
p To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a window frame or casing in which two sashes B, C, are placed as usual and allowed to slide freely up and down therein. In each side of the frame or casing A there are placed four pulleys a, two for each sash, each sash having the pulleys at each side of it, see Fig. 2, in which the pulleys of the lower sash C, are all shown. To the lower part of each side of each sash a cord b, is attached. These cords pass over the upper pulleys a, of the sashes and then pass downward under the lower pulleys a, and over drums c, 0, the two cords of each sash passing over the drums which are placed loosely on a shaft D, in the lower part of the frame or casing. The shaft D passes transversely through the frame or casing A, and has a pin cl, passing transversely through it. This pin is fitted or placed in a chamber d', formed by having a recess in the inner ends of each drum and is made to connect with either drum byV ing pawls f, catch. These pawls are tted in the lower part of the frame or casing, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1.
E, E, are bent rods the lower ends of which are fitted loosely on a rod or shaft g, in the frame or casing, the upper parts of the rods passing through the sill piece h, of the frame and having each a button z', fitted on their to-p ends. The rods E, bear or rest on the pawls f, or are directly over them, so that the pawls may, when desired,l
be freed from their respective ratchets d, by depressing the rods E, E.
The cord b, of the lower sash C is attached to the drum o, and the cord of the upper sash B, is attached to the drum o', as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The inner end of the shaft D, that is to say, the end within the apartment has a crank y', attached to it.
The operation will be readily seen. If the shaft D be pulled inward toward the operator the pin cZ,-of the shaft D will engage with the pins c, of the drum c, and if the shaft D be turned from left to right the cords b, of the sash C, will be wound on the drum c, and the sash C consequently, raised. The sash will be retained at any height within the range of its movement by means of the pawl of the drum c, catching into the ratchet of said drum. If the operator shoves the shaft D, from him the pin 0l, will engage with the pins e, of the drum o, and by turning the shaft D, in the same direction as before the sash B, if down, will be raised, the pawl f, of the drum o cutting into the ratchet on said drum. Either sash may be lowered by depressing the rod E, which will throw the pawl f, out from the table of the ratchet which is in the drum to which the cords of the sash to be lowered is attached.l The sash being prevented by falling too rapidly in consequence of the operator having his hand on the crank y', and restraining its motion. Y
By this invention it will be seen that the sashes may be raised and lowered with facility. If either sash should happen to stick or adhere in the casing a considerable power without material exertion may be applied to raise it. There are no parts that are liable to become inoperative.
The device is simple, efficient, may be readily vand economically constructed.
I Would remark that the insect screen F drums (c, of) sliding shaft D, pins (d, e),
may be operated in the same Way as the sashes.
Having thus described my invention What 5 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the rods E, E, paW1s.(f), ratohets (6W), loose and cords (b b), as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
WILLIAM I-IUEY.
