Description
Sept. 8, 1942.
W. V. KQMMER COMBINATION RAZOR STROP HOLDER AND HEATER Filed Nov. 27, 1941 WILL/AM I. (om/wee Patented Sept. 8, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION RAZOR STROP HOLDER AND HEATER 3 Claims.
This invention is a combination razor strop holder and heater, and the prime object is to provide in combination a hollow holder for a flexible strop, with means for automatically drawing the strop back into the holder and separate means for electrically heating the strop for increasing its efliciency in use.
More particularly the object of the invention is to provide an elongated hollow holder for a flexible razor strop, or for two strops if desired, with an electrical heating coil in the holder for heating the strop or strops, and means for automatically drawing the strop or strops back into the holder when not in use.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view on reduced scale of one unit of the invention for accommodating a single razor strop.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the unit shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of a modification of the invention, designed for accommodating two strops, such as a leather strop and a canvas strop.
As shown in Figures 1 to 3, the invention cornprises an elongated hollow holder or case 5, preferably rectangular in cross-section and including a bottom plate 6, side plates 1, top plate 8 and front and back end plates 9 and In, all defining an elongated rectangular strop and heater chamber II.
The bottom plate 6 is extended at its ends as shown to provide end flanges 6a, which are perforated as at 62) as means for securing the device upon a base or stand (not shown).
The frontal end plate 9 may be inclined as shown, as a matter of form and convenience.
An insulated electric heating element or coil I2 is rigidly mounted within the case, secured to the bottom plate 6, and is energized by means of an electric cord or lead 13 passed through an insulation grommet or eyelet 14 set through the back end plate In. This cord is of course equipped with the usual plug l for insertion in an electrical socket.
A winding spool I6 is horizontally mounted in the rear or inner end of the case, the same being rigidly seated on a pin shaft l1 anchored at its ends in the side plates 1. A flat coil spring 18 is secured at its inner end to the shaft [1 and is wound under tension upon and around said shaft. l
A swivel link I9 is secured by one end at 20 to the outer end of the spring l8, the opposite end of this joint being in turn secured at 2| to a strop clamp 22 which is riveted at 23 to the inner end of a flexible razor strop 24. The free end of the strop is passed freely through a narrow slot 25 cut through the upper margin of the frontal end plate 9. A handle 26 is secured by means of a stop clamp 21 to the outer free end of the strop, the said clamp being enlarged relative to the slot, as shown so as not to pass through the slot into the case.
Thus with the spring l8 properly wound and tensioned upon the spool IS, the strop 24 may be readily drawn out of the case for use, and when released will automatically return into the case under pull of the spring l8. The case is of course constructed slightly longer and wider than the strop it is to hold, so that the strop may move freely in and out of the case in use.
By energizing the heating element I2 a few minutes previous to use of the strop, the latter will be heated and thereby its efiiciency increased as a blade sharpening device.
Figure 4 shows a holder designed for two flexible strops, such as a leather strop and a canvas strop. In this design the case 5a is provided at its rear end with a small door 30 hinged at 3|, and which may thus be opened for access to the interior.
Within the case So the heating element lid is centrally mounted and is enclosed in a sheath 32 which is enchored at 33 medially to the front end plate 9a, the electric cord Ida being passed through a grommet 14a in the plate 9a. The sheath 32 is in turn enclosed by an outer envelope 34 similarly anchored at 35 to the end plate 9a. This envelope prevents the strops from falling into contact with the heating element.
Two winding spools 16a, 16b are mounted in the rear end of the case, at top and bottom thereof, and two strops, as a leather strop 24a and a canvas strop 24?), are secured to the ends of springs mounted on these spools in exactly the same manner as shown as to the strop 24 of the first described embodiment, the spring action of the lower spool I61), however, being reversed relative to the upper spool 16a, so that the two strops may lie close to the top and bottom of the case.
Similarly these strops 24a, 24b, are passed freely out through slots 25a, 2517, cut through the plate So at top and bottom, and handles (not here shown) are clamped to the outer ends of these strops, in the same manner as that described for the strop 24 of the first described form.
While I have here shown and described certain forms of my invention and specific structural features thereof, any desired changes may be made without the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described and Wherein is embodied an elongated case rectangular in cross-section and having spaced and parallel slots formed through its front end, adjacent and parallel to the top and bottom sides thereof,a pair of spring actuated winding spools opera tively mounted in the rear end of the case at top and bottom thereof, the spring action of the two spools being reversed as to each other and so as to rotate inwardly at their peripheral margins lying adjacent the top and bottom sides of the case, a pair of razor strops passed freely through the end slots of the case and connected at their inner ends to the said spools at the margins thereof adjacent the top and bottom sides of the case, an electrical heating element supported from the front end of the case between the two strops, and means for electrically energizing the heating element.
2. In a device according to claim 1, a protecting sheath supported from the front of the case and extended around the said heating element.
3. In a device according to claim 1, a door in the rear end of the case for affording access to the interior.
WILLIAM V. KOMMER.
