EXTENSION-LADDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,472, dated June 29, 1880. Application filed March 27, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES P. Boon, of La Fargeville, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Ladders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan of my extension-ladder. Fig. 2 is a side elevated view of the same; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the supporting and extension bars connected by the hinged extension crossbar; and Fig. 7 is aminor detail view of the cross-bar extended.

The nature of my invention relates to extension-ladders; and theimprovement consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

A designates a ladder, within which is arranged a sliding ladder, B, which constitutes the upper ladder. The lower ladder is provided with clasps O, which extend partly around the sides of the upper ladder, which has like clasps U, embracing the sides of the lower ladder.

The upper rung, D, of the lower ladder has a pulley, E, around which is passed a cord, F. This cord passes along, both over and under the rungs of the lower ladder, and is secured at its ends to the lower rung, G, of the upper ladder. By pulling the cord in one direction the upper ladder will be raised or extended, and by drawing upon the cord in a reverse direction said upper ladder will be lowered or retracted. A catch, H, pivoted to the upper ladder, engages with a round of the lower ladder, so as to keep the upper ladder extended to any desired length.

As the upper ladder is moved up or extended from the lower ladder the catch rides over the rungs of the said lower ladder, and it is brought in place for engagement with the rungs of the ladder A by means of its end I striking against the rungs of said ladder A. Apin, K, is provided to limit the movement of the end I.

The upper rung of ladder A has anti-friction rollers, over which the sides of ladder B ride. To said upper rung are hinged the ladder-supporting bars L, and to these bars are connected, by straps M, the lower extensionbars, N, of the ladder-support.

To the lower ends of the bars L is hinged an extension cross-bar, P, whereby the support may be extended laterally to make the same more firm when the bars L and N are extended. The lower bars, N, have holes or rackteeth to receive pins R, which pass through the bars L near their lower ends, said pins having eyes to receive a rope and being secured to the springs S. By drawing upon the rope T the pins will be disengaged from the bars N, and hence the bars N can be extended from the bars L, or retracted, as may be desired. Either bar N may be extended in advance of the other, if desired, in order to cause the supports to accommodate themselves to the inequalities of the ground.

What I claim is 1. In combination with an extension-ladder, the support, consisting of the hinged bars L, connecting with the sliding bars N, having rack-teeth or holes in their inner sides, the springs S, and pins It, controlled by said springs and adapted to engage with the lower 80 bars, L, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. In an extension-ladder, the combination of the extension-support, composed of the bars L and extension-bars N, with the pivoted extension-bar P, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
