Description

Sept. 1, 1942. R. LASKER PRINTED ARTICLE Filed May 1941 .aiillllllfl 'ZM INVENTOR, BY 10M 1% "Patented Sept. 1, 1942 UNITED STATE PATENT OFF-ICE PRINTED ARTICLE Richard Lasker, Jackson'Heights, N. Y., assignor to Milprint Incorporated, Milwaukee, Wis., a
corporation of Delaware Application May 20, 1941, Serial No. 394,247
' 4 Claims. (Cl. 35--53) erably printed on the inner face of the respective section., The panels of each pair are of identical size and shape and these panels are located so that they coincide when the inner faces of said sections are in abutting relation. Each pair of panels corresponds to different view of the same article.
Another object of the invention is to provide the inner face of each panel with a solid backing of opaque and light-reflecting material.
Other objects of the invention will be set forth in the annexed description and drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the base sheet folded so as to provide respective sections, these sections being shown slightly separated from each other in this view, in order to show the details more clearly.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 4-4 ofFig. 1.
The base sheet is folded along the fold line 3,
' in order to provide identical sections l and 2. Said base sheet is made of glassine'paper or cellulose acetate or Cellophane or other suitable light-permeable material which is preferably transparent, although it may be translucent.
The inner face of the section is printed'in any well-known manner to provide a picture A which is located in a panel of said section I, and the rear face, of said printed representationA is provided with a continuous backing S of opaque and light-reflecting material. The pictorial representation A may be printed in one or more colors and the composition which is used for printing the backing A of said picture A may contain aluminum powder or the like, so as to provide a continuous and opaque backing S of light-reflecting material. The picture A is first printed, and the backing S is then applied by printing the composition thereof on the back of the picture A.
The section 2 is printed so as to'provide a picthe line 3-3 of ture B in a panel of the inner face of said section 2, and said picture B is also provided with a material of said sections.
continuous .backingS of solid and opaque and light-reflecting material. When the sections I and 2 are held parallel with each other in the same plane, thepictures A and B are readily visible by reflection through the light-permeable Said pictures correspond to different views of the same object. In the specific embodiment shown, the picture Billustrates a portion; of a mattress, and the picture A' illustrates the outer covering of said mattress partially broken away, in order to show the filling of the mattress. In this case the filling consists of a series of resilient members.
When the sections are located as shown in Fig.
4, so that their inner facesabut each other,. the
pictures A and B are respectively visible when the abutting sections l and 2 are turned first to one side and then to th other side. The thickness, of the printed layers which are shown in Fig. 4 is greatly exaggerated, as in actual practice said printed layers are extremely thin.
'An improved printed sheet of the type disclosed can be used as an advertising sheet. as for a. book, or as an insert of abook, and. for many other purposes. The free edges of the sections 1 and 2 are bound together in the binding of the book, thus providing a folded leaf. When this folded leaf is first viewed on one side, and then on the other side, the coincident panels of each pair provide different views of the same object. The opaque and light-reflecting continuous backing S @prevents either picture of a respective pair of pictures, from being seen through the other section. Said folded leaf may have any number of pairs of, panels. Since each section is printed on its inner face, the printed composition is protected against" rubbing or the like, when the sheet is folded.
The folding of the transparent sheet prevents the sections from shifting laterally relative to,
each otherwhen the inner faces of said sections abut each other. Other means may be employed for preventing such lateral shifting.
.The layer S of opaque and light-reflecting material is an importantfeature of the invention. The use of this layer makes it unnecessary to print continuous and opaque pictures A and B.
These pictures may be line pictures, or discontinuous pictures of any type, becausethe backing S makes it impossible to see one picture through the other-picture. It is likewise unnecessary to print v the pictures A and B with opaque ink. The lightopaque backing S has a sharp color contrast with the pictures A and B. For example, said pictures can be printed in blue and the backing Smay having a color which is diiferent from the color of the respective picture. v V
2. In combination, a sheet of light-permeable material which is folded into two sections, each said section having a picture imprinted wholly on the inner face of said section, each said picture having a continuous and opaque and lightrefiecting coating on the inner exposed face of said picture, said pictures being substantially superposed when the inner faces of said sections are in contact, the color of each said light-reflecting coating being different from the color of said pictures.
3. A device according to claim 2 in which said pictures are different views of the same object.
4. In combination, a sheet of light-permeable material which is folded into two sections, each said section having a picture imprinted wholly on the inner face of said section, each said picture having a continuous and opaque and lightreflecting coating on the inner exposed face of said picture, said pictures being substantially superposed when the inner faces of said sections are in contact, the color of each said light-reflecting coating being different from the color of said pictures, at least one of said pictures being discontinuous.
