Description

Patented Aug. 4, 1942 UNITED STATE DEMOUNTABLE ASH TRAY Leslie'H. Blair and Thomas B. Dailcy, Ingleside, Tex.
Application June 17, 1940, Serial No. 340,943
1 Claim. (Cl. 248-226) This invention relates to a .demountable ash holder.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder for receiving the ashes and stubs of cigars and cigarettes, and for holding the lighted cigars and cigarettes, which may be detachably fastened to a desk or table so that it will be firmly held in place while in use and so that it may be readily detached for emptying.
Another object of the invention is to provide,
ably secured to a wide base so that the holder may be readily supported on a table or desk without liability of overturning It is another object of the invention to provide a novel type of clamp that may be readily 10 in combination, a holder that may be detachattached to, or detached from. the margin of a desk or table on which the holder may be detachably supported.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, examples of which are given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, whereih- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the holder, partly in section, shown supported by the clamp, said clamp being shown in section.
Fi ure 2 shows a plan view thereof showing the holder partly in section.
Figure 3 shows an elevational view of the bracket.
Figure 4 shows another form of bracket that may be employed.
Figure 5 shows a fragmentary, end view of the holder detachably mounted on a, supporting base, and
Figure 6 shows a fragmentary,'side view of the holder shown mounted on said base, the latter being shown in section.
In the drawing, the numeral I designates a holder which may be of any selected contour preferably formed of sheet metal and having a detachable cover 2 and whose base, or bottom, has an outwardly extending rim 3. On opposite ends of the cover 2 are the arcuate supports 4, 4 for holding a lighted cigar or cigarette. The cover may have an opening therethrough to receive the ashes and stubs. This opening is normally closed by means of a cover plate 6 which is pivoted to turn on a transverse axis located at the longitudinal center of the cover so that it will normally remain in horizontal position and will return to said position when tipped to permit entrance of the ashes or stubs.
Within the holder and adjacent one side wall thereof there is a transverse reinforcing bar I. Clamp screws 8 are fitted through holes in said side of the holder and are threaded into said bar as shown in Figure 1. These screws have annular clamp discs as 9 formed integrally therewith which clamp against the outside of the wall of the container as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Spaced outwardly from the discs the clamp screws have theenlarged heads Ill. The numeral ll designates the main clamp plate whose upper end Ha is overturned to rest on the top of the table or desk, Its underside is formed with 'a resilient pad l2 toprevent scarring of thedesk, or table.
The clamp plate I! has a vertical slot I3 cut therethrough as shown in Figure 3. against the inner side of the clamp plate is the bracket l4 whose upper end la is overturned into parallel relationship with the overturned end He.
A clamp bolt 15 is fitted through the slot l3 and also through the bracket i4. It has an enlarged head It; which rests against the clamp plate II and a" nut I1 is screwed thereon to clamp against the bracket. The bracket l4 may therefore be adjusted depending on the thickness of the margin of the desk or table l8 to which the clamp is to be screwed. A clamp screw I9 is threaded through the overturned end l4a. Its upper end has a swivelling connection with a clamp disc 20 designed to clamp against the underside of the margin of the desk or table. -The lower end of the clamp screw has a grip member 2| by means of which the screw may be manipulated. The clamp therefore may be readily applied to, or detached from, the supporting object.
The main clamp plate II has spaced T- slots 22, 22 to receive the outer ends of the clamp screws 8. Opposite the T- slots 22, 22 the bracket I4 is provided with slots 23, 23 to receive the heads ll) of the clamp screws 8, In applying the holder to the clamp the heads l0 may be inserted through the enlarged upper ends of the T-slots, with the heads l0 projecting into the slots 23, and then moved downwardly so that-the heads ID will engage opposite sides of the T-slots as shown in Figure 1. The holder may be detached by moving it in a reverse direction. I
In some instances a plate-like clamp llb may be fastened to theend or side surface of the desk or table by means of a single set screw 24. This clamp also has theT-slots 23 to receive the heads of the clamp screws 8 as hereinabove explained. If it be desired to demount the holder I, the clamp l lb may be swung a' quarter turn around the set 55 screw 24 so that it will lie closely against the mar- Fitted gin of the desk or table top out of the way. It may be screwed in fixed position by using two or more screws through the holes 25 provided for the purpose.
In some cases it may be desired to use the holder 9 in the ordinary way on the top 0! the table or desk. For this reason a base 28 has been provided. It is preferably in the general shape of a truncated pyramid having a fiat upper surface prorided with inwardly turned crimps to provide the inwardly facing grooves 11, 21. The flange 3 of the holder I may be inserted into these grooves, the holder moved until it is centrally located on the base and the holder may then be used in the usual way.
when the holder has been filled, or partly filled, it may be detached and the cover I removed for emptying purposes.
The drawing and description are illustrative merely, while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claim.
What we claim is:
A device of the character described comprising a bracket whose upper end is overturned, said bracket having a, vertical slot, a clamp plate fitted 25 against the forward side of the bracket and whose upper end is overturned into parallel relation with and is spaced from the overturned end of the bracket, said clamp plate having a vertical slot, a clamp bolt fitted through the slots of the clamp plate and bracket and having an enlarged head at one end and a clamp nut screwed onto the other end whereby said plate and bracket are secured together and are capable of adjustment relative to each other, said clamp plate having spaced T-slots in its vertical portion, a holder having a transverse reenforcing bar adjacent one side wall, clamp screws fitted through holes in the sides of the holder and threaded into said bar, annular clamp discs formed integrally with the screws clamping against the outside wall of the holder, enlarged .heads on said clamp screws spaced outwardly from the discs, said heads engaging in said T-slots to secure said holder to said clamp plate and a clamp screw threaded through the overturned end of the bracket forming means for securing the device to an anchor therefor.
