FASTENING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,166, dated June 22, 1880.

Application filed February 1G, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, THOMAS MOORE, of Cheyenne Oity, in the county of Laramie and Territory of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciication.

In the drawings, Figure l, Sheet l, is a perspective of a buckle-fastening strap and loop, and indicating one mode of reducing my invention to use; Fig. 2, Sheet l, a vertical central section thereof; Fig. 3, Sheet l, a detail of the buckle; Fig. 4, Sheet 1, a detail of the loop. Fig. 5, Sheet l, represents a detail in the form of the buckle and loop. Fig. 6, Sheet 2, is a detail of the form of buckle shown in Fig. 5; and Fig. 7, Sheet 2, represents a modification in mere form..

My invention relates to the combination of afastening-strap with a buckle and loop; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement, substantially as hereinafter set forth, whereby the act of tightening the strap is rendered comparatively easy, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.

A represents the buckle. a a are the side bars, and b and b are the cross-bars. c is the tongue, and d is an anti-friction sleeve on the bar b. All these parts may be made in any well-known or suitable way, variations in form bein g only a matter of mere design, or for the purpose of adapting the buckle to various particular uses, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.

I am aware that in the general or broad terms thus far employed I have included no novel features of construction 5 but Ido not here intend to claim these features of construction independently of those hereinafter described, and which constitute the essential element-s of my invention.

c is an outer or supplemental cross-bar, provided with an anti-friction sleeve, e', andconnected to the parts already described by means of the supplemental side bars, c a', as is clearly Shown in Fig. 3.

B is a strap or band, one end of which is secured to the end bar, b,of the buckle Ain any suitable or convenient way.

O is a loop applied to the opposite end ot the strap or band B. This loop may be made in the usual manner, or in any well-known Way, excepting that, for the purpose of employing it in connection with theA buckle A with the greatest advantage,I make in the said loop a supplemental cross-bar,f, and place thereon an anti-friction sleeve, f.

D is a tightening-strap, one end of which is applied to the outer end ofthe loop O.

To use the buckle, loop, and strap now described, I place the strap or bandB about the object to be bound, and pass the strap D behind and over the bareof the buckle A, then in like manner over the bar f, thence back through the rear part of the said buckle, and secure the end there by means of the tongue c, it being understood that the free end of the strap D is punched out' at suitable intervals to receive the said tongue, all of whichis clearly shown in Figs. l and 2.

It will be perceived from the foregoing description, and from reference to the drawings, that the object to be bound may be very tightly conflned in the band B with comparatively little exertion, as the buckle A and loop O,'in i connection with the strap D, furnish about the same advantage or purchase as would result from the use of a double and single block tackle. It will also be perceived thatmuch advantage will be gained even if the loop G should not be provided with a supplemental or interior cross-bar, and also even if the bar b be not made to lessen the friction. Y

As the 'uter end of the strap D moves about one-third faster in tightening than the buckle, the tongue c will find a hole as soon as if the holes were arranged about one-third nearer each other, or near enough to weaken the strap.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a modilication of form which I deem desirable for use in connection with saddles, either Spanish or American, and in Fig. 7 I have shown a modication of form desirable to be used in connection with pack-saddles.
