UNITED STATES JOHN CURRY MILLER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
STEAM-GENERATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,165, dated June 22, 1880,
Application filed May '7, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN CURRY MILLER, of Louisville, county of J eiferson, in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is aspecification.
The object of my improvement is to produce furnace or fire-box steam generators of better principles of construction, better draft qualities, greater steam-producing capacity, and better adaptation for cleaning.
It consistsin inclosing a shell forming the furnace, flue, and smoke and draft vent within an outside shell produced by the union of sections so constructed as to form water-area, steamdome overthe furnace, and steam-superheatin g dome around the flue-vent passing across the outside shell.
That my invention may be made and used by persons skilled in the art to which it pertains, its construction and operation arehereby explained by the following full, clear, and eX- actdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification. v
Figure 1 is a transverse section illustrating inside construction.
The letter B refers to the furnace, J to the lire-door, E to the flue, G to the smoke and draft vent; the letters 0 to the water-area, L
' to the steam-room above the flue, A to the draft vent.
steam-room in the dome over the furnace, D to the steam-superheating dome, H to the steam-circulating pipe connecting steam-dome and steam-superheatin g dome.
Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the longitudinally-flanged sections of the outside shell partially detached from position, inclosing the inside shell forming furnace, flue, and smoke and The outside shell may be formed of flanged sections uniting vertically around the furnace, thus forming the steam dome above, and uniting vertically around the fluevent, thus forming the steam-superheating dome. In this figure the letters A and F and A, D, and F refer to the longitudinally-flanged sections forming the outside shell. The letter Gr refers to the smoke and draft vent crossing through the outside shell, and forming, in connection with the part marked D, the steam- ,superheating dome. The letters K refer to the flanges by which the sections are united into a complete outside shell, the unions of which may be made by either bolts or rivets.
Man-holes and heads may be placed where desired for convenience of cleaning.
The whole construction may be proportioned as desired.
The head of the furnace-ring will arrest the heat generated and turn its course through the portion marked E, at the end of which it will be again arrested at I and turned through the vent-pipe marked G, while passing through which it will perform the office of superheating the steam collected in the dome marked D,
As many similar hues and vents as may be desired may be attached to the furnace and inclosed in the outside shell.
The letters M refer to standard for supportin g the rear end of the generator. 7
The head in the shell of the furnace may also be concaved downward.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- 1. The combination, with the fire-box, flue, and uptake or chimney, said parts being permanently secured together, of an inelosingshell provided with a superheating-chamber surrounding said chimney or uptake, said inclosing-shell made in sections secured together by bolts or rivetsinserted through outwardlyprojecting flanges.
2. The combination, with the fire-box, flue, and uptake or chimney, said parts being permanently secured together, of an inclosingshell provided with a steam-dome, a superheating-chamber surrounding the uptake or chimney, and a circulating-pipe connecting the steam-dome and superheating-chamber, said inclosing-shell being composed of sections secured together by bolts inserted through outwardly-proj ecting flanges, substantially as set forth;
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this the 10th day of April, 1880.
JOHN CURRY MILLER.
