This invention relates to railway car construction and more specifically to a metallic side wall structure applicable as a unit in the conversion of cars to metallic house cars and in the construction of new metallic house cars.
It is an object of this invention to provide metallic side wall structures for house cars embodying posts, means for directly connecting the posts and the car underframes and bottom longitudinally extending members which shall be of uniform width regardless of width of car underframe and inside width of car.
A further object is to provide metallic side wall structures for house cars embodying posts, means for directly connecting the posts and car underframes and bottom longitudinally extending members, the connecting means being so constructed and positioned as to serve as supports for floor boards.
A further object is to provide metallic side wall structures for house cars embodying posts, means for directly connecting the posts and car underframes and bottom longitudinally extending members, these members being asociated with the connecting means to resist the pull of the posts independently of the means fastening the members and the connecting means together.
A further object is to provide metallic side wall structures for house cars embodying posts, means for directly connecting the posts and car underframes and bottom longitudinally extending members, the connecting means and longitudinally extending members serving to support the floor boards.
A further object is to provide metallic side wall structures for house cars embodying posts,
`means for directly connecting the posts and the car underframes and bottom longitudinally extending members which shall be of uniform width regardless of width of car underframe and inside width of car and characterized further by a reduction in the number of connecting means employed.
A further object is to provide metallic side wall structures for house cars embodying posts, means for directly connecting the posts and car underframes and bottom longitudinally extending members which shall be of uniform width wherein said structures shall serve as load carrying girders of standard construction regardless of width of underirame and inside width of car.
Other objects of the invention will become clear as the description thereof proceeds.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings the side wall unit is designated in its entirety by the reference numeral I0. It will be apparent that in this figure only a portion of a side wall unit is illustrated which extends from the door opening to one end of the car. The other portion of the unit is of similar construction and it will be understood that the unit for the opposite side of the car will embody the construction illustrated.
The side wall unit I0 includes a side plate II which, as is customary, extends substantially from end to end of the car. The side plate is preferably Z-shaped in section. To it are secured the upper ends of the door posts I2 and intermediate posts I3 which also are preferably Z-shaped in section. The securement of the upper ends of these posts to the side plate is effected by means of brackets I4 in the manner more clearly shown in applicants co-pending application, Serial No. 167,739, filed October 7, 1937, which has matured into Patent 2,235,449, granted March 18, 1941. As is customary, the4 door post is arranged with the web I5 thereof parallel to the wall and the anges I6 and I1; extending respectively outwardly and inwardly at right angles to the wall. The intermediate posts I3 are arranged with their webs I8 at right angles to the wall and their flanges I9 and 20 parallel to the wall.
Metallic sheathing 2| is secured along its upper margin to the side plate II and to the outside of the door posts and intermediate posts. The sheathing is composed preferably of a plurality of sections which overlap at posts as is well understood.
The side wall structure I0 embodies a bottom longitudinally extending member 22 the length of which is preferably equal substantially to the length of the structure. As more clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the longitudinally extending member 22 is preferably in the form of an angle disposed with one leg 23 vertical and the other leg 24 horizontal. The vertical leg 23 extends upwardly relatively to the horizontal leg 24 and is secured as by means of rivets 25 and 26 to the lower ends of the door and intermediate posts and to the lower margin of the metallic sheathing. The horizontal leg 24 is disposed below the lower ends of the posts so as to provide space for the reception of the outer sections of brackets utilized to secure the posts to the underframe of the cars to which the side wall structures are applied.
Each of these brackets embodies a vertical ange 21 by means of which the bracket is secured to the car underframe represented in Fig. 2 of the drawings by the side sill 28. A horizontal flange 29 extends outwardly from the upper end of the Vertical attaching flange 21 and is reinforced by means of a web 30 projecting outwardly from the vertical flange 21. Beyond the web 30 at the upper portion of the bracket is an outer section 3| preferably rectangular in cross section and cored out as indicated at 32 and 33 in order to reduce the weight of the brackets. The outer section 3| is provided with oppositely extending ears 34 and 35. By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings it will clearly appear that the horizontal leg 24 of the longitudinally extending bottom member 22 lies below and in vertically overlapping relationship with the outwardly extending sections of the brackets. Attachment of this flange to the ears 34 and 35 of the brackets may be made if desired. Rivets 33 and 3'| are illustrated for this purpose.
The outwardly extending section 3| of each bracket is provided with one or more integral upstanding anges 38. These flanges are adapted to abut the inwardly extending flange of the door posts or the webs of the intermediate posts and to be secured thereto as by means of rivets 39and 40. These flanges are reinforced by means of the webs 4|.
As more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings the horizontal ange 29 and the outer Vsection 3| of the brackets are alined with the upper surface of the underframe. This flange and the outer section of each of the brackets are accordingly adapted to support a portion of the car floor 42 which extends outwardly beyond the underframe. Support for the outwardly extending portion of the car floor is also provided by the horizontal leg 24 of the bottom longitudinally extending member 22. For this purpose the horizontal leg 24 carries` iillers 43, preferably of wood, extending between the outer sections of the brackets.
It will be observed that the side plate, the posts, metallic sheathing and bottom member 22 are disposed in outwardly spaced relationship to the car underframe. By this arrangement an increase in the inside width of the car is obtained both in new car construction and in the conversion of wooden sheathed cars to all steel cars. The bottom longitudinally extending member 22 is spaced from the underframe and the spacing desired is determined by the size of the brackets. Accordingly the longitudinally extending member 22 lmay be made standard and utilized inrralway house cars irrespective of the inside width of the cars and the width of the underframe. This member can, therefore, be a rolled shaped. A standard side wall structure, whether pre-assembled as a unit, or applied in parts, is made possible since it is not affected by variations in widths of car. The side wall structure constitutes a girder effective to carry a portion of the load imposed on the underframe between the bolsters.
It, will be observed that all of the rivets securing the brackets and the longitudinally extending 'member to the posts are in shear and the rivets 75 fastening the brackets to the car underframe are in shear. The horizontal leg 24 of the bottom member lies below the outer section of each bracket. The entire strength of this leg is consequently effective to resist the upward pull of the posts and of the metallic sheathing intermediate the posts. The rivets 36 and 31 which fasten the horizonal leg 24 to the ears of the outer sections of the bracket are not necessary to develop the strength of the horizontal leg and are utilized merely to prevent shifting of the brackets relative to the bottom longitudinally extending member when the wall structure is shipped as a unit. These rivets may be omitted if desired.
It will be clear, moreover, that the considered structure provides for direct connection between the posts and the car underframe while maintaining the integrity of the section of the horizontal leg 24 of the bottom member 22.
This application is an improvement upon applicants co-pending application identified herein.
It will `be apparent that numerous changes and modiiications in the details of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art. It is intended, therefore, that all such modications and changes be comprehended within this invention, which is to be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.

A railway house car comprising a metallic undcrframe, a metallic side plate, metallic posts secured to said side plate, metallic sheathing secured to said side plate and posts, said side plate, posts and sheathing being spaced outwardly of said underirame, brackets secured to the lower ends of said posts, said brackets extending inwardly from said posts to said underframe and being secured thereto, and a longitudinally extending member spaced outwardly of said underframe and having a horizontal flange disposed below and in vertically overlapping engagement with said brackets, said member having an upstanding flange fastened to said posts and the lower margin of said sheathing.
2. A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe, a metallic side plate, metallic posts secured to said side plate, metallic sheathing secured to said side plate and posts, said side plate, posts and sheathing being spaced outwardly of said underframe, brackets secured to the lower ends of said p-osts, said brackets extending inwardly from said posts to said underframe and being secured thereto, a longitudinally extending member spaced outwardly o'f said underframe and having a horizontal flange disposed below and in vertically overlapping engagement with said brackets, said member having an upstanding flange fastened to said posts and the lower margin of said sheathing, and a floor extending outwardly beyond said underframe, said brackets supporting portions of said floor extension.

A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe, a metallic side plate, metallic posts secured to lsaid side plate, metallic sheathing secured to said side plate and posts, said side plate, posts and sheathing being spaced outwardly of said underframe, brackets secured to the lower ends of said posts, said brackets extending inwardly from said posts to said underframe and being secured thereto,l a longitudinally extending member spaced outwardly of said underframe and having a horizontal ange disposed below and in vertically overlapping 'engagement with said brackets, said member having an upstanding flange fastened to said posts and the lower margin of said sheathing, filler members carried -by the horizontal flange of said member ybetween said brackets and a oor extending outwardly beyond said underframe, said oor extension being supported upon said brackets and said llers.

A railway house car comprising a metallic underframe, a metallic side plate, metallic posts secured to said side plate, metallic sheathing secured to said side plate and posts, said side plate, posts and sheathing being spaced outwardly of said underframe, brackets secured to the lower ends of said posts, said brackets extending inwardly from said posts to said underframe and being secured thereto, and a longitudinally extending member spaced outwardly of said underframe and having a horizontal ange disposed below and in vertically overlapping engagement with said brackets, said member having an unstanding flange fastened to said posts and the lower margin of said sheathing, said longitudinally extending member being formed of a rolled section of the same width for varying inside widths of car.

A side wall structure for railway house cars comprising a side plate, posts secured to said side plate, metallic sheathing secured to said side plate and posts, connecting brackets secured to the lower ends of said posts, and a longitudinally extending member, said member having a flange disposed below and in vertically overlapping engagement with said brackets, said member having an upstanding flange secured to the p-osts and the lower margin of said sheathing.

A side wall structure for railway house cars comprising a side plate, posts secured to said side plate, metallic sheathing secured to said side plate and posts, connecting brackets having outer sections disposed below said posts, flanges extending upwardly from said outer sections, said I flanges being secured to the lower ends of said posts, and a longitudinally' extending member, said member having a flange disposed below and in vertically overlapping engagement with said brackets, said member having an upstanding ilange secured to the posts and the lower margin of said sheathing.
9. As an article of manufacture a bracket for attaching a post of a side wall structure to a railway car underframe comprising a vertical underframe attaching ange, a horizontal flange extending from said vertical flange, a vertical reinforcing web for said horizontal iiange extending from said vertical flange, a horizontal section beyond said web for securing overlapping engagement of a horizontal flange of said side wall with the underside thereof, said section being adapted to lie below a post and having an upwardly extending post attaching flange, said section being of greater thickness than said horizontal ange and of suficient cross sectional area to resist stresses imposed thereon by said post.
