Description

J. P. COUNCIL. Tool for Hand Sewing.
No. 229,100. Patented .lun e2-2, I880.
WITNESSES:
INVENTOR:
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. COUNCIL, OF COUNCILS STATION, NORTH CAROLINA.
TOOL FOR HAND-SEWING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,100, dated J'une 22, 1880.
Application filed August 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN P. GoUNcIL, of Councils Station, in the county of Bladen and State of North Carolina, have invented anew and Improved Tool for Hand-Sewing, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my tool. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish a novel, cheap, and simple tool for facilitating 1 the sewing of harness, shoes, and other articles.
In the drawings, A represents a handle, in one end of which is fixed an awl, B, and a thread-carrier, C, the latter being a pointed rod or wire with a slot, at, in its end. Secured upon the other end of the handle, by bolt and nut or other device, is a fork, D, carrying a spool, E, the rim of one head of which is toothed, as shown at b, while the pawl F, pivoted on one of the prongs of the fork, engages in the said teeth.
In using this tool a hole is first made with the awl, which is then withdrawn, and the threaded thread-carrier introduced therein, the awl at the same time making a second hole, and so the work continues, the carrier following in the holes made by the awl. As the carrier, having carried the thread through the hole, is withdrawn, the thread forms a loop through which a threaded spindle is passed,
and then the carrier is wholly withdrawn to and the operator, by keeping on a finger the loop G, that is attached to the pawl, can at will permit or check the revolutions of the spool.
This tool is commonly used when fine and accurate work is required, for, as the awl must make a hole whenever the thread-carrier enters the preceding one, it follows that the holes must all be made at equal distances apart, and that the stitching will consequently present a neat appearance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described compound tool for facilitating the sewing of harness by hand, consisting of the handle A, having at one end an awl, B, and a pointed slotted thread-carrier, C, and having at the other end a fork, D, carrying the spool E, rim-toothed on one head, as at b, and a pawl, F, pivoted on one of the prongs of the fork, as shown and described.
