HEATING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,082, dated June 22, 1880,
Application filed May 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS P. BERRY- HILL and WILLIAM D. VAUGHAN, of Carrollton, in the county of Carroll, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Stoves; and we do hereby declare that the followingis afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved stove complete. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lower side of the same. Fig. 3 is'a vertical transverse section upon line as w of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section upon a central line.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of our invention is, mainly, to enable heating-stoves having sheet-metal coverings to be made practically air-tight'at the joints between the sheet and cast metal; and to this end it consists, principally, in the means employed for securing the sheet-metal covering in position upon the stove, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified;
It consists, further, in the construction of the cast-metal end plates, by means of which the sheet-metal covering may be placed in position after said end plates have been secured together, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, finally, in the construction of the bars or flanges employed for connecting together the edges of the sheet-metal covering, whereby said edges may be lapped over each other, substantially as and for the purpose.

In the annexed drawings, A represents the rear end plate, and B the front end plate, of our stove, which plates have each the general form of an ellipse, and have an outward swell, as shown. Each plate A and B isprovided with suitable legs, and said plates are connected together, and to a curved plate, 0, that extends between, by means of bolts D, which pass horizontally through said end plates outside of said plate 0. The plate 0 incloses the lower portion of the space between the end plates, A and B, and extends above the vertical centers of the same, and at a suitablepoint is provided with ledges c for the support of grate-bars. The ends of the plate (3 are contained within suitable grooves or between lugs that are provided upon the inner face of the end plates, A and B, and at a point a short distance outside of said plate each of the latter has a flange, a or b, that projects inward from and extends around its entire inner face, and forms a bearing for and upon which is placed a metal casing.
The casing of our stove consists in part of a cast-metal upper section, E, which at its center is provided with an elevated portion, E, that has an opening, 0, inclosed by a cover, a, which may be used for cooking-utensils or for supplying fuel to the stove. At one side of said upper section is a semi-cylindrical flue, E which extends downward along the side of the stove and forms an exit-flue, and at its upper end has an opening, 0 that is surrounded by a collar, 6 for the reception of an ordinary I stove-pipe.
' Secured by bolts or rivets to the lower edge, ateach side of the casing-section E, is a plate of sheet metal, F, which fills the space longitudinally between the end plates, A and B, and extends downward to the lower center of the stove, and at or nearits lower edge has secured to its outer face a metal flange or bar, G, that has such width as to enable one or more bolts, H, to be passed transversely through the same and through the flange or bar G upon the'opposite plate F.
As thus arranged it will be seen that by means of the bolts H the flange or bars G can be drawn toward each other, so as to cause the casing to be made to bear ,firmly upon each portion of the flanges a and b, and render the joint between said parts practically air-tight.
In order that the edge of the lower overlapping plate F may have space, the flange or bar G is rabbeted within its upper inner corner, as shown in Fig. 3.
The space between the plate 0 and the cas- 5 ing forms a flue, I, which is open at the upper edge of said plate, opposite to the exit-flue E while at the opposite side of said plate said flue is closed, except where it connects with said exit-flue, at which point said plate 0 is extended upward over the lower end of the latter, by which arrangement the heated escaping gaseous products of combustion will pass downward through said flue I, and thence out through said exit flue.
When building a fire it may be desirable to have direct communication. between the combastion-chamber K and the exit-flue E for which purpose a dampered opening, 6 is provided within the inner wall of said flue.
The end plates, A and B, are each provided around their edges with an inward-projecting flange, a or b, which forms a finish at such point and incloses the joint between said plate and the casing; but in order that the latter may be placed in position after said end plates have been bolted together, we omit said flange from the lower end of each, so as to se cure at such point a space between said plates equal to or slightly greater than the length of the plates F. The top section, E, is placed in position by passing its ends through slots 2, which are cut in the flanges a and I) near the upper portion of the stove.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of our invention, what we claim as new May, 1879.

3. In combination with the edges of the sheet-metal covering F, the flanges or bars G, secured thereon, one of which bars is provided within its inner corner with a longitudinal rabbet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
