FEED-WATER HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,930, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed February 7, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB RHULE, Jr., of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Feed-Tater Heater, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a i 5 feed-water heater for theinside of a boiler, which heater shall serve at the same time as a depository of mud and sediment f1 om the water, and thereby prevent scale in the boiler.
In the drawings, A represents the boiler,
2o provided with tlues B and smoke-stack C. Longitudinally within this boiler A is placed the feed-water heater, supported on legs a a, that rest on one of the ues B. This feed,- water heater consists of a cylinder, D, provided with a water-supply pipe, E. which enters through the boiler-shell, with a steamequalizing pipe, F, that is connected with the head of the cylinder D on a line with its bottom, and is turned upward at right angles to 3o open into the steam-space of the boiler well above the water-line.
Gr is a pipe leading` from the opposite end of the cylinder D, at or below the water-line thereof, and turning down at right angles nearly to lthe bottom ofthe boiler A, below the under side of the tlues B.
H is the blowoft' pipe of the feedwater heater, which pipe H extends horizontally from the head ofthe heater at its bottom, and
4o out through the head of the boiler A, and on the end of this blow-oft pipe H is Xed a cock, d.
lnside of the feed-water heater D, and extending downward from the top thereofl to below its water-line, and between the dischargepipe Gr and supply-pipe E, is the diaphragm 1, whose function is to prevent the passage through the said feed-water heater of any oating substances in the water, while it serves 5o also to retard the onward movement of the water in a measure, and to thereby cause adeposit of the sediment within the said heater.
In the top of the cylinder D, and on either side of the diaphragm I, are two openings, f
f, upon which are set ball-valves g g, which 5 5 are operated by the pressure of steam within the said feed-water heater.
This heater is placed so as to be almost or entirely in the steam-space of the boiler. Consequently the water supplied to it through the 6o pipe E will become heated by the steam in the boiler before it enters into the boiler it- 'selt through the dischargepipe G, and the mouth of the discharge-pipe G being just over the crown-sheet of the boiler and below the tlues, the entering water does not come in direct contact with the said tlues.
Vhen it is desired to blow off the sediment from the feed-water heater the valve d is` opened, when the pressure of steam from the 7o steam-space in the boilerAdown into the pipe F will force the water and sediment from the feed-water heater out through the pipe H.
When the cock d is closed, steam, entering the pipe F, serves to equalize the steam-press- 7 5 ure in boiler and heater.
The purpose ot' the openings or ports fj' and valves y g is also to equalize the steampressure in the feed-water heater with that in the boiler, should the supply o' water be cut 8o oft' from the heater, in which case the valves g g will lift and remain so until the pressure in both boiler and heater is equalized.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A feed-water heater consisting of the cylinder D, placed within the steam-space of the boilerA,and provided with a supply-pipe,
E, and a discharge-pipe, G, that extends be- 9o low the boiler-flues to near the crown-sheet of the boiler, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the cylinder D, provided with supply-pipe E and dischargepipe Gr, ot' the diaphragm I, set between said pipes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In afeedfwater heater set within a boiler, the steam-equalizing ports and valves f j' and roo g g, respectively, substantially as herein shown and described.
