Description

- tion consists in making a solution composed UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO JAMES S. HOWARD, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES M. ABBOTT, OF WATEEBURY, CONNECTICUT.
ALUMINIUM-ALLOY l LATlNG SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,900, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed January 13, 1880. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES s. HOWARD, of] Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Improvementin Electroplati n g Solutions and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in solutions for electroplating with an alloy of which aluminium is the base; and the invenof cryolite, chloride of magnesium, and chloride of manganese dissolved in water, as hereinafter described. The solution is composed of one part cryolite, one part chloride of magnesium, and one part chloride of manganese, preferably combined in the form of powder. To one pound of this compound add about one gallon (little more or less) of water, and boil until thoroughly dissolved.
The alloy is placed in a sack of netted or other open-Work material, and suspended in the solution in the usual manner of suspending plates of metal for electroplating; or, if preferred, the granulated material may be placed on the bottom of the lead-lined tank. In that case one pole of the battery must be connected to the lead lining.
I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the exact proportions herein described for the solution,as they may be varied to some extent without materially changing the result.
I claim- The herein-described solution for electroplating, consisting of cryolite, chloride of magnesium, and chloride of manganese dissolved in water, substantially as described.
JAMES S. HOWARD.
