SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,892, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed March 30, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that we, IsnAM T. HARDY and NOAH H. DIBBLE, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Lubricator, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a lubricator especially adapted to steam-cyliners.
The invention consists of a combined steam- -condenser, oil receptacle or tank, and gage or indicator, so arranged that the steam from the boiler entering the condenser and condensing therein will flow into the oil receptacle or tank and force the oil thence through the gage or indicator into the steam-cylinder, to which the device may be attached.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lubricator, partly in section on line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on line xx, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line z z, Fig. l.

In the drawings, A represents the vertical condenser, provided with a smaller interior pipe, a, that extends nearly to the top thereof, and with a valve, b, on its top for the escape of air, said condenser being screwed on a leg of the T-pipe c, so as to stand upright.
From the lower end of the condenser A a short horizontal pipe, d, connects with the end of the screw-valve B, and from the side of said valve B a short pipe or couplin g, f, projects perpendicularly downward, and connects with the T-coupling C, from which coupling C a pipe, g, projects downward into' the oil tank or reservoir D, said oil-reservoir D being provided on its top with an opening, h, in which is the screw-plug h', for the convenience of lling said tank, and being provided at the bottom with a cock, k, for the drawing off of the contents of said tank D.
The coupling C is connected with the gage or indicator E by means of the bent tube Z, that is entered into the coupling F, which forms the lower support of the said gage or indicator E, the top of said indicator or gage E being iixed in the coupling H, which is provided with a screw-plug, H', gage E being (Model.)

All the joints of this device that require it are made tight by suitable packing and stuffing-boxes or glands.
The pipe c screws into the steam-supply pipe M, which conveys steam from the steamboiler to the engine-cylinder, and thereby connects the lubricator therewith, so that steam entering from the boiler will pass up through the pipe a into the condenser A, and, there condensing into water, flow down through the pipe d, valve B, pipe j', coupling C, and pipe g into the tank or reservoir D that contains the oil, said valveB regulating the iiow of the water of condensation into said tank D,

The pipe 7c is extended up far enough to permit water: enough to remain in the tank D at all times to cover the cnd of the pipe g, as shown iu Fig. 2. As the depth of water in said oil-tank D increases by access from the condenser A the oil in said tank D is thereby forced upward in the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 2, through the passage C in the coupling C, and thence through the pipe Z and coupling Fand cock-key F', through the passage l in said key F', into the indicator or gage E. This coupling F is held in place by means of the stufiing-box F, and affords a means for permitting the outiow from the gage E of any excess of water therein accumulating.
From the gage E the oil is forced by the pressure of the water through the coupling H and screw-valve I, said valve I being set to regulate the dow of the oil into one of the tubes in the pipe c, and through its prolongation a into the steam-supply pipe M, and thence into the cylinder that is to be lubricated.
