Description

(N0 Model.)
0. G. HILL! Thill-Goupling.
No. 228,815. Patented June 15,1880.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
CHARLES G. HILL, OF ARLINGTON, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO GRIFFITH FEELEMYER, OF SAME PLACE.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 228,815, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed March 9, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAR-LEs G. HILL, of Arlington, Baltimore county, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Conplings; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2-, a vertical central sectional view of the same.
The object of my invention is to produce a combined axle-clip and thill-coupling which will not rattle, and in which the retraction of a single bolt serves to secure the clip upon the axle and retain the shaft end in contact with the usual rubber or equivalent buffer.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the axle, over which passes the clip a, which is entirely separate and distinct from the coupling proper. Through openings in the lower ends, a, of the clip a passes a bolt, B,having a beveled or tapering lower face, b, and a threaded end, I), on which latter a nut, C, is screwed. On the forward end of the bolt B are jaws c c, which embrace the pin which latter is either integral with or passes through a hole in the shaftend F.
D is a block having an aperture somewhat larger than the bolt B, and provided with lugs cl, which enter the slots 0 in the jaws c and serve to hold the block in position. Between the block D and the shaft end is inserted the rubber or equivalent spring-buffer E.
Such is, in general terms, a description of the construction of the device.
Its operation is as follows: As the bolt B (No model.)
is retracted on turning up the nut C, the clip ais compressed against the sides of the axle, and is incidentally drawn downward upon it as the tapering lower face of the bolt engages with the under sides of the holes in the ends a of the clip. This retraction of the bolt at the same time draws the shaft end against the rubber E, preventing the possibility of 5 I rattling.
Any looseness on the part of either clip or rubber may be obviated by placing a leather or equivalent washer under theclip or behind the rubber, as the case may be.
It will have been seen that a single operation serves to secure both clip and shaft end, and that the device is adapted to be placed upon vehicles having shaft ends of the usual construction, no especial adaptation of the latter being necessary. Furthermore, the described construction of the device greatly facilitates the removal and attachment of the shafts, as may be desired.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. In combination with the clip a, bolt B, having slotted ears 0, and the thill end, the rubber E and block D, having lugs d, engaging with the slots in the ears.
2. In combination with the clip a and bolt B, having beveled face b, the block D, having an enlarged opening, through which the bolt passes, and the ears 0, as set forth.
CHARLES G. HILL.
