No. 228,814. Patented June 15,1880.
,winwsses; I 4 4 N.PE\ERS. PMOYO-UTHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTONv D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. HANSON, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA.
GRAIN-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,814, dated June 15, 1880.
I Application filed January 29, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. HANSON, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Oars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan; and Fig. 3 is a crosssection taken vertically through the fastenings of one of the sliding bottoms.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to dumping or selfunloading cars or vehicles; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the body of a car or vehicle, supported, in the usual manner, upon axles B B and wheels G (l. The body A may consist of one or more compartments, D, the bottoms of each of which are sloped or beveled toward the center, so as to 'form hoppers from which the load or contents of each compartment may readily escape through the central opening, E.
The spouts F, projecting downwardly from the said central opening, are provided with slide-doors G, for which suitable cleats or guides H are provided under the bottom of the car or vehicle.
I I are brackets or cross-bars arranged transversely under the guides H to support the sliding doors G. The latter are provided with arms J, having openings K, corresponding with suitable openings or notches L in the cross-pieces I, through which keys M may be inserted to retain the said slide-doors in position during transit.
The keys M, which are attached to the cross-bars I by chains N, are provided with notches O, to receive hinged lock-plates P, which, in turn, are provided with slots Q, fitting over staples R, upon which they are secured by keys or looks S.
To open the slide-doors a suitably-arranged lever, T, or a simple hooked rod, may be employed.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood.
To unload the car it is' only necessary to open the slide door or doors, when the load will be dumped from the hopper-shaped compartments through the spouts upon the ground, or into any receptacles or conveyers which may be placed underneath.
It will be noticed that the sides of the spouts are provided with hooks U, for the convenient attachment of such conveyers, especially when of a flexible nature.
Grain-cars have prior to my invention been provided with hopper-doors operated by detachable levers, and a hasp and staple have been employed to lock the hopper-door when closed. I do not broadly claim either of these constructions.
- Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in dumping cars or vehicles, the body A, having hopper-shaped compartments D, provided with spouts F, and slidedoors G, having arms J, provided with openings K, guides or cleats H, cross-bars I, having notches L, and keys M, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM S. HANSON.
Witnesses:
