Plow.
No. 228,813. `Patenfszd June 15,1880.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicEG JOSEPH HAFNER, OF SPRINGVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,813, dated June 15, 1880. Application filed March 29, 1880. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HAFNEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springville, Humboldt county, California, have invented certain Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line :v a' of Fig. l.
Myinvention consistsin the herein-described arrangement. and means of adjustment of a` t wheel located at the rear of the land-side and between it and the mold-board, the object of said adjustable wheel being to compensate for the wear ofthe plowshare, to reduce the friction of the parts in the furrow by supporting the rear of the plow, and to regulate the pitch of the share according to the depth of furrow required.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner-in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represent-s the beam, a the clevis at its forward end, and B one of the handles secured to the rear of the beam, the other handle, B', being rigidly connected with the handle B by braces b o. O is the plowshare; D, the mold-board, and E the land-side, provided near its rear with a slot, d, having curved concentric sides, the slot d being for the reception of a guide, e, which projects from the outside of a bifurcated shipper-lever, G, pivoted at It to a plate, i, secured to the under side of the beam A, the upper end of the inner bi furcation being extended to form a handle, k, by which the shipper is operated, while between the bifurcations, at their lower end, is hung a wheel, H, which is intended to run in the furrow and support the rear of the plow, whereby much of the friction of theshare and landside is avoided.
To compensate for the wear of the plowshare the position of the wheel may be readily adjusted by applying the hand to the handle of the shipper-lever and drawing it back, which causes the wheel H to be carried forward and the rear of the plow to be elevated. The depth of the furrow may also be regulated by the adjustment of this Wheel.
When the wheel H has been adjusted to its proper position relative to the rear of the landside, it may be held in place by means of the following device:
To the inner end of the axis on which the shipper-lever G vibrates is pivoted a bent locking-lever, I, the upper end of which is pressed outwardly by a spring, l, while the lower end of this lever I carries a nger, m, projecting at right angles thereto, and passing through a hole, n, in the inner bifurcation of the shipper-lever G, said nger being also pressed by the action of the spring through another one of .a series of holes, u', made in a curved plate, p, secured to the lower end of the handle B of the plow, the finger also entering a hole, n", in the outer bifurcation of the shipper-lever G, by which means it 1s held immovably in place, and the rear of the plow kept in its elevated or depressed position, as desired.
Tounlock the linger m, and thus allow of the vibration of the shipper when the wheel is to be moved forward or back to give a new inclination to the land-side and plowshare, it is simply necessary to press the top of the locking-lever I toward the handle of the shipperlever against the resistance of the spring l.
WVhat I desire to claim as my invention is- The land-side E, with its slot d, in combination with the shipper-lever G, guide e, andwheel H, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH HAFNER.
In presence of- R. F. CARE, W. H. BRYAN.
Wit-ness my hand this 9th day of March,
