MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 228,779, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed May 12, 1880. (MocleL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIS J. PERKINS, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a mechanical movement adapted, first, to change a reciprocating movement into a variable oscillating one; second, to insure a determined amount of movement in a variable oscillating movement; third, to produce an equal or variable strain or tension on the opposite strokes of an oscillating or reciprocating movement; fourth, to furnish a motive power to change a valve or similar device on engines of all classes-eleetrical. steam, and hydraulic; fifth, to furnish a motive power whereby a spring or similar device is acted upon by the engine or machine with its full power until the power stored up is sufficient to instantly change the valve without further drawing upon the power of the engine.
This invention is applicable tomechanism for operating parts in a shingle-machine, a steam-en gine, pump, and many other machines.
The improvements consist, first, in t-hecombination, with a shaft provided with a slotted device, of a movable device fitted insaid slotand a spring which exerts force upon said movable device second, in the combination, with a shaft provided with a slotted arm, of a device adapted to be moved in the slot and a spring which operates upon said movable device; third, in the combination, with a rockshaft provided with a slotted arm, of a movable device fitted in the slot and a spring which draws upon said movable device; fourth, in the combination, with a shaft provided with a slotted arm, of a roller fitted in the slot and a spring connected to said roller; fifth, in the combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slotted arm and a grooved roller fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to the bearings of said roller; sixth, in the combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slotted arm and a grooved roller fitted in the slot, of a bifurcated bearing in which the rolleris journaled and a spring connected to said bearing; seventh, in the combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slotted arm and a movable device fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to said movable device and adjusting mechanism which limits the rocking movement of the shaft; eighth, in the combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slotted arm and a movable device fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to saiddevice and set-screws adapted to engage with an arm of the shaft to limit the rocking movement of the latter; ninth, in the combination, with a rockshaft provided with a slotted arm and a movable device fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to said movable device and a handle to actuate the latter; tenth, in the combination, with arockshaft provided with aslotted arm and a movable device fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to said movable device and a handlearm secured to the rock-shaft.
Referring to the drawings, which represent parts sufiicient to illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2is aview, in vertical transverse section, through the slotted arm, representing the roller and connecting parts in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a modification. Fig. 4 is a view looking toward the opposite side of said modification, and showing the means for adjustably limiting the rocking movement of the shaft.
A rockshaft, A, is provided with a slotted arm, B, in the slot of which fits a grooved roller, 0. A bifurcated bearing, D, has the roller journaled in its free extremities, while a spring, E, is connected to the opposite portion thereof. This spring may be metal, caoutchouc, ,or any other elastic material, and its form may vary from that here shown.
Ihe extremity of the spring opposite to that which is connected to the roller is secured in position so as to exert a tension or force upon the roller. The action of this spring is to tilt the slotted arm, so as to maintain the rockshaft in any desired position. A handlearm, F, is also secured to the rock-shaft. It
may be in the same piece with the slotted arm, as shown in the drawings, or it may be made independent of the slotted arm. So, too, said slotted arm, though represented in separate piece from the shaft, may be formed thereon in any other suitable manner.
Two set-screws, G, work in threaded bearings, respectively, on opposite sides of the handle-arm, and adjustably limit the tilting movement of the latter. The rocking movement of the shaft is thereby regulated so as to be greater or less. A modification of this regulator is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The arm H secured to the rock-shaft is not adapted for the additional function of a handle to move the roller, but operates solely to restrict the rocking movement of the shaft in conjunction with the set-screws.
Fig. 3 of thedrawings illustrates a handle, L, connected to the bearings of the roller, so that the latter may be directly actuated in its movement within the slotted arm, instead of being indirectly moved, as represented in the main figures.
It is apparent that by means of the roller being caused to move within the slotted arm the latter is held in a tilted position, and the rock-shaft is maintained in the desired position.
In the foregoing specification I have described the best mode now known to me for applying the principle of my invention; but changes, substitutions, and omissions may be made as regards the described parts, provided only the essential elements of invention set forth in the followin g claims are employed.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with a shaft provided with a slotted device, of a movable device fitted in said slot and a spring which exerts foice upon said movable device, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a shaft provided vided with a slotted arm, of a movable device fitted in the slot and a spring which draws upon said movable device, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a shaft provided with a slotted arm, of a roller fitted in the slot and a spring connected to said roller, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slotted arm and a grooved roller fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to the bearings of said roller, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slotted arm and a grooved roller fitted in the slot, of a bifurcated bearing in which the roller is journaled and a spring connected to said bearing, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slotted arm and a movable device fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to said movable device and adjusting mechanism which limits the rocking movement of the shaft, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slotted arm and a movable device fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to said device and set-screws adapted to engage with an arm of the shaft to limit the rocking movement of the latter, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination, with a rock-shaft provided with a slottedarm and a movable device fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to said movable device and a handle to actuate the latter, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination, with a rock-shaft pro-v vided with a slotted arm and a movable device fitted in the slot, of a spring connected to said movable device and a handle-arm secured to the rock-shaft, substantially as set forth.
