Description

June 23, 1942. c. D.' FALLERT CONTAINER Filed May l5, 1940 Patented vJune 23, 1942- Gaylord Container Corporation, St. Louis,`Mo., a corporation of Maryland f Application May 13, 1940, serial No. 334,731 3 Claims. `(c1. 229-51) This invention relates' to containers, particy ularly shipping cartons for canned goods or other merchandise.
The invention has for its principal objects to devise a strong and durable carton of simple and economical construction which can be readily divided into `a plurality of separate, completely closed smaller carton sections. The invention consists in lthe divisible carton and in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a divisible carton embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the divided carton,
Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectionv on the line 3-3 in Fig. l,
Fig. 4 is a central vertical transverse section on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1, A
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5--5 in Fig. 4; and i I,
Fig. 6 is a section similar to Fig. 5 through the g adjacent end portions of the separated carton sections.
The accompanying ldrawing illustrates a disuch as ber or corrugated board, `folded to form sidewalls `I and end walls 2. The side walls'l have bendab'le upper and lower marginal closure 4longitudinal center line of the carton, and the separate compartments, also greatly strengthen the carton in both vertical and transverse directions. handled as a unit, or it may be readily divided into two separate carton sections B, each adapted for separate handling by' slipping the blade of a knife between the reversely bent end portions 1 of the two transverse partition walls 5 and cutting through the top and bottom closure flaps 3 from the partition wall receiving slot 6 in one side wall I of the carton to the corresponding slot in the opposite side wall thereof. If desired, this'line of cutting or separation may be indicated on the closure aps 3 by dotted, scored or perforated lines B. The carton is divided along a line passing betwen the two cross-partition walls 5, and each of these partition walls forms one end wall of each of the two smaller carton sections B. Thus, each of said carton sections is a complete fully closed carton. The partition wall receiving slots 6 in the side walls I of the full size carton A are disposed in the plane along which the carton is to be divided. Thus, to divide the carton, it is only necessary to cut or break the carton along the dotted, perforated or score lines 8 on the top and bottom closure visible shippingcarton A of bendable `material tion walls connecting said side walls and dividing said carton into compartments, said top walls comprising inturned flaps along the upper and lower edges of said end walls that terminate short of said partition walls and inturned flaps that extend continuously along the upper and end wall flaps 4 terminate short of the trans- 7 verse center line of the carton.
The carton A is provided midway of its ends with two vertically disposed cross partitions or walls 5 that preferably abut fiatwise one against another and serve to divide the carton into two compartments. The side walls I of the carton are provided midway of their endsvwith vertical slots 6 that extend from top to bottom of said side walls. The two cross partitions 5 extend outwardly through the slots 6 in the side walls I and have their adjacent ends bent away from each other, as at 1, and stapled or otherwise permanently secured ilatwise to the outer faces of said side walls on opposite sides of said slots.
lower edges of said side walls from end to end thereof across the partition-walls and are folded over upon and secured flatwise `to said end wall aps, each of said side walls having a vertical slot therein disposed in alinement with said partition walls, whereby said carton is adapted to The above described carton has several im-A portant advantages. The double transverse partitions or lwalls 5 divide the carton vinto two be divided into separate closedc'arton sections by severing said top and bottom walls along lines extending from the slot in one of said side walls to the slot in the other of said side walls, each of said partition walls comprising a member that is separate from said side walls and has both end portions bent away from the other partition wall and permanently secured flatwise to the adjacent side wall.
2. A carton comprising a closed body including top, bottom, side and end walls and two adjacent partition walls connecting said side walls and dividing said carton into compartments, said top This two compartment carton may be.
and bottom walls comprising inturned iiaps along the top and bottom edges of said end walls that terminate short of said partition walls and inturned closure flaps alog the top and bottom edges of said side walls that are folded over upon and secured flatwise to said end wall flaps, each of said side walls having a vertical slot therein disposed in alinement with said partition walls, whereby said carton is adapted to be divided into separate closed carton sections by severing said top and bottom closure flaps along lines extending from the slot in one side wall to the slot in the other side wall, each of said partition Walls having its end portion bent away from the other partition wall and permanently secured ilatwise to the adjacent side wall, one of said partition walls extending through at least one of saidl slots and having its adjacent bent end portion secured to the exterior face of the side wall having such slot therein.
3. A carton comprising a closed body including top, bottom and side walls and two vertical partition walls that abut atwise one against another and connect said side walls and divide said carton into two compartments, said top and bottom walls comprising inturned flaps along the upper and lower edges of said end walls that terminate short of said partition walls and inturned closure iiaps along the upper and lower edges of said side walls that are folded upon and are secured iiatwise to said end wall tlaps, each of said side walls having a vertical slot therein disposed in alinement with said partition walls, whereby said carton is adapted to be divided into separate closed carton sections by severing said top and bottom closure aps along lines extending from the slot in one side wall to the slot in the other side wall, both of said partition walls extending through thevertical slots in said side walls and terminating in reversely bent end portions that are permanently secured ilatwise to the outside faces of said walls on opposite sides of said slots.
