mtlfglsfilltihil'siitable top extension and means for securing th-plate in the top.
'I'h oughout thevdescription and drawing the nibef'nii'iiployed to refer to the same part.
Considering the drawing, a cupped top body portion I has on one side two projecting pierced ears 2 and 3 by means of which the .whole may be attached to a suitable support.
As best shownA in Fig. 3, the top I has an extended open portion 4 provided with a seat for a plate, and by means of a ring nut 5 a circular glass plate 6 is held in the seat and permits the inspection of Vthe interior of the top from out' side." The form of the open -extension of the .top and the glass plate and its holding elements may be varied within the scope of this application. A y
In Fig. 3 will benoted an outlet 'I for oil pmsing out of the top I by way of the outlet tube 8 shown in Fig. 4. 1f desired the outlet 9 may be closed by the screwfplug I0. Outlet 9 has -the p same opening into the top as is provided for the fellow outletv 8.
, What istermed for-the purposes of this ex- `planationv a bowl II is located below the top I,
and in connection therewith as illustrated. The top and bowl are secured in contact by means of a cap nut 4I2 on the threaded end of an axial bolt rod I3. Therod has a lower end head I4 shouldered to meet a sleeve enlargement I5 at the bottom of thej'bowl. It will be noted that the upper edge `I6 of the bowl is made somewhat Application vMarch 18, 1941, Serial No. 384,013
' 3 claims. (o1. 21o-165') ,ncidlhisiinlventiomrelates to oil filters vof the charthicker to contact with the top, and vthis contact maybe changed into a different formation. I As shown in Fig. 3 the boltrod has a shoulder 'I der in Fig. 3 is the central sleeve portion I8 of an inner portion termed for this explanation a core. The sleeve ts the bolt rod lengthwise. The top of the core I9 is in the` form of a circular disk, the upper surface of the disk being provided with concentric grooves 20, the bottom of each groove having a perforation 2| as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 3 will also be noted the passage or chamber 22 in the top of the core. This passage is formed in a downwardly extending circumferential edge portion of the core marked 23. The upper part of the core ts into the top I as shown and the downwardly extended part 23 has an encircling groove 24 constructed with a passage 25 leading into ethe bowl I I. The passage 24 is arranged in communication with the oil inlets 26 and 21 shown in Fig. 4, either of which may be used as desired, the other being closed.
As best shown in Fig. 3, the core sleeve I8 is surrounded by aA cylindrical which has a closed bottom 29 attached by means of the ring nut 30 to the lower end of the core sleeve. e
In Figs. 2 and 3 will b'e noted the upper disk 3| provided with spaced perforations 32 and made of any chosen material. Top disk 3| is centrally pressed down by the thumb nut 33 on the threaded end of the bolt rod I3 and the pressure exerted on thedisk top 20 of the core as-illustrated. 'Ihe top I and the core are thus clamped together.
Considering Fig. 2 there will be noted an upy take passage 34 leading to a vertical bore 35 normally closed by the ball valve 36 controlled by coil spring 3'I which is kept by means of nut 38 in the vertical cavity 39 above the valve.
In the operation of this invention, the bowl may be drained by removing screw plug 40 in the bottom of the b owl. It will be particularly observed that by removing thebolt rod all the parts of this lter may be detached one from another and each given a thorough cleaning when necessary. The oil enters the bowl by way of the encircling outside groove in the core and passes into the filtering member. Through the open upper end of the member oil enters the side passage in the top of the core continuing through the perforations of the disk of the core and the cover disk thereon into the top of the body top and out through one of the oil outlets. If the at its upper portion a'nd engaging this shoulfiltering member 28 filtering member clogs for any reason, the oil pressure in the valved uptake lifts and the oil is discharged into the body top thus relieving any over pressure.
Having described my invention. I claim:
1. An oil filter comprising a top portion provided withdevices for engaging a support, a bowl portion arranged below the top, an axial bolt rod extending through the said top and bowl and having a threaded upper end, a cap nut engaging the threads of the rod above the top and adapted to secure the top and bowl together in detachable relation, a core portion having a central sleeve body constructed to t on said bolt rod lengthwise, devices constructed to secure the core on the rod, said core having an annular disk upper portion, said disk having grooves in its upper surface and perforations in the grooves, the said disk being extended downwardly around its edge and said downward portion having an outside encircling groove, oil inlets in communication with the said outside groove, said groove being constructed with openings whereby oil enters the bowl, a cylindrical lter carried by the said core sleeve and engaging the said downwardly extended edge portion of the disk, said disk having an oil cavity arranged to receive oil from within the lter and whereby filtered oil may pass through the disk perforations into the disk grooves, and said top being constructed with oil outlets.
2. In an oil filter, a top portion provided with devices for engaging a support, a bowl portion arranged below the top, an axial bolt rod extending through the said top and bowl and having a threaded upper end, a cap nut engaging the threads of the rod above the top and adapted to secure the top and bowl together in detachable relation, a core portion having a central sleeve body constructed to t on said bolt rod lengthwise, devices constructed to secure the core on the rod, said core having an annular disk upper portion, said disk having grooves in its upper surface and perforations in the grooves, the said disk being extended downwardly around its edge and said downward portion having an outside encircling groove, oil inlets in communication with the said outside groove, said groove being constructed with openings whereby oilienters the bowl, a cylindrical filter carried by said core sleeve and engaging the said downwardly extended edge portion of the disk, said disk having an oil cavity arranged to receive oil from within the filter and whereby filtered oil may pass through the disk perforations into the disk grooves, said top being constructed with oil outlets, and said top having a by-pass extending from the said outside encircling disk groove into said top and having a pressure operated spring governed valve arranged to open and close the by-pass.
3. An oil filter, comprising a top body portion, a bowl portion, means for securing the top portion and the bowl portion together in detachable relation comprising an axial bolt rod, a core poi-tion carried by the rod and having an upper perforated disk portion located in the top, a filtering member having a closed bottom attached to said core, the ltering member being open at the upper end, the said core having an annular downwardly extending portion at the edge thereof constructed to fit closely around the open end of the ltering member, said top body portion and said downwardly extending portion of the core having communicating passages whereby oil from the exterior may 'flow into the bowl and into the filtering member, the said top body" portion having oil inlet connections and oil outlet connections constructed and arranged to be coupled to oil tubes, andthe said body portion v having an extended open portion, a glass plate arrangedv in the said open extension of the top and m'eans for securing the plate removably i the said open extension.
