FAUCET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,736, dated June 15, 1880.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK DORAN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a ce'rtain new and useful lmprovementin Faucets; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

' 1o Prior to my invention, in that kind of faucet in which was employed a valve that closed with the pressure, and which was moved toward and from its seat by means of an eccentric-pin on the inner end of the spindle, (which kind of faucet is best known in the market as the Fuller faucet,) there was more or less liability of the valve, under certain conditions, to rattle or make more or less noise in seating or in approaching its seat, and this liability was an objection to the use of this kind of valvular faucet.

My invention has for its object to overcome this objection in this kind of faucet; and it consists in the combination, with the valve, 2 5 of a spring or yielding device or devices adapted to hold the valve laterally, while at the same time permitting it to assume the various positions necessary to its movement by the crank-motion of the eccentric-pin on the inner end of the spindle, all as will be hereinafter set forth.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved faucet, I will now proceed to more fully describe it, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side sectional view of an ordinary cock, such as known for many years in the market asthe Fuller faucet, but having 4oY my invention embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a partial horizontal sectionY of the same and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the valve, with its attachments, separate fronrthe other portions ofthe faucet, for the purpose of more fully illustrating my invention.

In the several figures the same part will be found designated by the same letter of reference.

A is the main body portion of the faucet, and B is the nozzle or outlet-pipe, while C is the spindle, D the stufing-box surrounding the same, and E the handle, all made and arranged in about the manner usual in a Fuller faucet,

h is the elastic bulb-like valve, having a sort 5 5 of conical rear portion, and provided with the usual stem g, the free end of which is hung on and pivoted to the inner end of the spindle (l, through the medium of the eccentriestud or wrist-pinf, in Vthe manner and for the pur- 6o poses well known, said valve having its seat at o.

-i are the usual lateral projections on the stem g, radiating from the stem in a plane which, if extended, would pass substantially through the axis of the wrist-pi1'1j",21n d which projections serve to hold the valve-stem properly in place relatively to the said wrist-pinf; and m are the yielding or elastic projections Or spring-like arms extending outward from 7o the said stem g, on opposite sides thereof, and in a plane at right angles to the plane of the lugs t', in such manner that their ends bear against the walls of the water-way in which the valve-stem moves, or against the bore of 7 5 the passage in which said valvelies, as plainly illustrated.

With the exception of such variations as are effected'by the elastic .arms or yielding guides m, the operation of the faucet and the 8o movements of its parts are about the same as usual in the kind of faucet shown 5 but byreason of the combination with the valve-stem g of the yielding guides m, acting in conjunction witlrwalls or xed portions of the water-way, 85.

as shown and described, the valve and its Y stem, while they are permitted to assume the positions and make the movements necessary in the Opening and closing of the valve by the action of the wrist-pin f, (which, of course, 9o moves in a circle or arc,) are prevented from vibrating or oscillating or performing any movements which might cause any rattle of any part of the valve or stem against. any other part of the contrivance, andare eifectually prevented from performing any flutter-in g movement, when the valve is either partially or wholly open, that might cause any jar or noise in the faucet or pipes connected therewith, durimgV either the continuous liow or the Ioo stoppage of the flow of liquid through the valve-chamber or water-Way of the faucet.

It will be understood, of course, thatin lieu of the form shown of spring-holders m, yielding or elastic steadying` devices of other form, and otherwise applied to the valve or its stem, may be employed Without departing from .the spirit of my invention, the gist of which rests in the combination, with thehvalve, of some suitable means or devices adapted to permit the necessary vibrations or Wave-like motions of the valve, (that result from its movement toward and from its seat by the impelling eccentric pin or stud f,) and at the same time prevent any casual lateral movement or any fluttering of the valve from any other cause during its opening or closing, or While standing open.

Without, therefore, limiting,r myself to any precise form or particular location of the elastic holder devices or steadying` devices,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the valve of that kind of faucet in which the valve closes with `the pressure and has its stem pivoted to a crank-pin or eccentric, of a yielding` or elastic device or means for restricting the lateral movements of the valve, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
