Description

NITED STATES -ATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. LINTHIGUM, OF BALTIMORE, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM LINTHIGUM, OF BROOKLYN, MARYLAND.
'DUMPiNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,655, dated June 8, 1880.
Application filed March 13, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. LINTHIOUM, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Vagons; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a wagon emro bodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a bottom plan of the same.
My invention has reference to dumpingwagons in general, and in particular to that class of the same used for carrying coal and I 5 adapted to discharge the coal into the cellarways of buildings andit consists in a wagon of that class, constructed and operating substantially as hereinafter set forth, the specific points of novelty being made the subjects of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the wagon-body, which is provided with a bottom, a, hinged to the body at the rear lower edge, at a, and arranged to be lifted at its forward end by means of a chain, a, which is led over a pulley, B, and thence to a drum, 0, which is mounted on a shaft, I, secured to the front of the body.
A suitable chute, f, is attached tothe end of the body, and may be su iiplemented, if desired, by a separate chute.
The wagon-body is provided with rollers D D, flanged, as shown, which rest on the rearwardly-pitched bearers d d, between which 3 5 slide the supplemental bearers G G, that are arranged to be drawn out rearwardly, as shown, and are provided with telescopic or equivalent verticallyadjustable legs g g. These are secured at any desired height by catches or pins h. The rollers D are made sufficiently long to extend over the bearers and support the wagon-body thereon".
A chain, E, is led around apulley, (l, on the shaft I, and also around a second pulley, F,
5 secured to the stationary bearers, and is hooked to a catch, 6, on the body.
. The object of this construction and arrangement is to afford means for starting the'wagonbody backward should it be necessary.
The shaft I is provided with square or polygonal shoulders c, and the pulley O and drum 0 are formed with correspondinglyshaped central openings, so that they may be readily thrown into and out of gear, as may be desired. 5
In operation the wagon is backed up to the curb in front of the coal-hole and the bearers G G are retracted, so that when the wagonbody is run back thereon its spout will register with the coal-hole or cellar-Way, the vertically-adjustable legs g 9 serving to effect this readily. The wagon-body is then run back on the bearers, a suitable braking mechanism being applied to the rollers in case the incline of the bearers be steep, and when the spout f is brought in proper relation to the cellarway the end gate is opened, and the contents of the cart for the most part discharge themselves. Finally, the bottom a is lifted by means of the chain a, drum 0, and crank c, and the cart is completely emptied. The body is then run back onto the bearers d, where it is suitably secured, and the bearers G G are pushed under the body and secured.
The advantages of thedevice may be briefly set forth as follows: WVhile avoiding the manual labor incidental to the lifting of the body in that class of wagons which discharge the coal through chutes across the sidewalk, it dispenses with, the cumbrous and somewhat complicated elevating mechanism, and substitutes for it the simple device for tilting the bottom. Besides, the coal may be discharged from my wagon directly into the cellar in every case in which the wagon-body can be brought to the coalhole, while it frequently happens with the chute-wagons that the extreme elevation of the body is not sufficient to cause the coal to run down the chutes.
What I claim is o 1. A dumping-wagon provided with a hinged bottom and mechanism for tilting it, as set forth, and one or more bearers arranged to be retracted from beneath the body, whereby the end chute of the latter is brought into communication with the place of deposit of the contents of the wagon, as described.
2. In combination with the bearers (Z G G and vertically-adjustable supports g g, the body A, having rollers D and tilting bottom a, as set forth.
JAMES S. LINTHIGUM.
