WAGON-SEAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,491, dated June 8, 1880.

Application filed March 3, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MYRoN TOMPKINS, of Attica, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVagon-Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through one of the arms.

Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in both figures.

This invention relates to wagon-seats; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the body or bottom of the seat, the back or rear edge of which is provided with lugs B B, to which are hinged the brackets G O, supporting the seat-back D. The latter is provided at each end with arm-brackcts E, extending forwardly toward the brackets F at the front ends of the sides of the seat.

The brackets F are provided with rearwardly- (N 0 model.)

extending tubular sleeves G, accommodating the front ends of the brackets E, as shown.

11 represents a spring coiled in sleeve G around bracket E, and operating against a button, I, at the front end of the latter, and against a flange, J, at the rear end of the sleeve.

By the action of springs H it will thus be seen that the brackets E are forced, with the seat-back D, in a forward direction, thus giving to the said seat-back an elasticity which greatly increases the comfort of the seat.

- I am aware that wagon-seats having backs adapted to yield under pressure are not broadly new.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- The combination of the seat A, having brackets F, provided with sleeves G, having flanges J, hinged back D, having brackets E, provided with buttons I, and the springs H, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
