' My invention relates to improvements in scarifiers of the nature disclosed in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,951,166, issued March 13, 1934, to H. W. Protzeller, and pertains to that type of scarifying element including a scarifier tooth and a hanger bar therefor adapted to be carried by a vehicle or other traveler.
In scarifying equipment of the character disclosed in said Patent No. 1,951,166 for maintaining rook ballast of railway tracks and in similar equipment for other specific'purposes, the vehicle or other traveler employed is supplied with hanger bars upon which scarifier teeth are detaohably mounted so that they may be readily replaced and also readily interchanged between the various hanger bars. Replacement of teeth is desired in order that new ones may be substituted for those which have become entirely worn out. The interchanging of teeth from one hanger bar to another is desired, not only to provide for uniformity in the wear thereof under conditions wherein the leading portions of the teeth are caused to wear off at one corner or the other, asin scarifying ballast at opposite sides of a railway track, but also to provide for increased eiiectiveness of such corner-worn teeth in their new positions and the concurrent self-sharpening of the same preparatory to the return thereof to their original positions.
It is an object of my invention to provide' a relatively simple and durable-scarifying element of the present nature consisting of parts so constructed and arranged that the initial costs and costs of maintenance are comparatively low. A further object of the present invention is to provide a scarifier element including a relatively inexpensive holder which is readily detachably mounted on a hanger bar and upon which the tooth of the element, in turn, is readily detachably mounted.
Another object of the invention resides in providing for simplicity and security of attachment of the scarifier tooth to the holder and of the holder to the hanger bar, a further object being to provide'a tooth and holder of'such design that the tooth may be worn substantially entirely away, and the hanger appreciably worn before being rendered useless in the assembly.

The hanger bar A has a series of bolt holes T0 in the upper portion thereof for the reception of bolts, employed in the usual manner, for clamping said hanger bar, in upright position, to a wing frame or other frame member of a vehicle v "ortr aveler'. Also formed in said hanger bar A and extending transversely thereof beneath said openings ll, I2 is a third opening in the form of a slot I 3, said slot being centered onsaid medial line of said hanger bar. These openings ll, I2 and I3 provide sockets at opposite sides of the hanger bar for the reception of bosses on the tooth holder B,.as will soon appear.
The tooth holder B is an elongated composite rounded. In rounding the bottom corners, the edges of the body-plate I4 at the sides thereof, near the base, are arcuately curved downwardly, such curved reaches of. said edges together with the, adjacent planar reaches thereof forming seats l5 adapted to be engaged by the tooth C. Reinforcing each holder member'b and adding width'to the edge of its body-plate I4, is a continuous marginal fiange l6 which is formed integifally with said body-plate at the outer face thereof. Each tip portion of each holder-member b is formed with abolt-receiving bore l1, the same being eccentrically disposed with referelement are conveniently assembled. The hanger bar A being clamped in place, either edge foremost, to a mobilesupporting structure, one of the holder members b, as shown in Fig. 9, is applied to one side of the hanger bar A with the leading tip portion of said member in a depressed position relative to the position occupied by the trailing tip portion. Although the tooth C has only the single fastening bolt 34 therefor, it will be readily appreciated that the engagement of the dual bearings 29 on the tooth with the two seats i5 on the leading tip portions of the holder member 1),

The ready attachment of the tooth C to the companion holder members b and the corresponding readiness with which the tooth may be detached from such members, renders it easy fora used to substitute a new tooth for one worn beyond further usefulness, and also renders it easy for the user to interchange the teeth of scarifier elements, when desired, as for the purpose of obtaining uniformity of wear of such teeth.
The paired holder members b of a scarifier element are each reversible end-for-end, such reversibility of said members being desired in the event of the wearing off of the seat l5 of either member to an extent impairing the security of attachment of a tooth thereto. The doubletipped construction of said holder members, which renders possible the reversibility thereof, provides for doubling the life of said members, withinfavorable dimensional and Weight limitations, as will be readily comprehended.
In either end-for-end relationship of either of the paired holder members b, the boss '20 will be socketed inthe leading end of the slot l3 in the hanger bar A, and the boss l9 Will be socketed in the one or the other of the openings II, l2 occupying the leading position in the hanger bar. Correspondingly, the one or the other of the bosses 2i, 22 will be socketed in the one or the other of said openings ll, I2 in the hanger bar occupying the trailing position.
The relative positioning of the openings H, 12 and slot l3 in the hanger bar A renders it immaterial as to which 'one of the edges of said hanger bar is placed in leading position and this fact coupled with the further fact that either end of either of the two identical holder members b of a pair may take the leading position, greatly simplifies the requirements in manufacture and in assembly, as well.
The construction of the tooth 0, though nec-- essarily of hard, wear-resisting material, is relatively inexpensive, the entire element considered, since the major portion of the tooth structure may be worn away before the tooth becomes useless. 1
The paired holder members identically constructed of comparatively soft and relatively inexpensive material, are effectively guarded against wear at their leading tip portions by the tooth clamped thereto, but when the seat l5 at such portion of either holder member becomes too far worn, upon the wearing away of the tooth, to afford a satisfactory tooth mounting,

the member will be reversed to present the previously trailing seat l5, if not already worn, in leading position, and thus provide an unimpaired support for one of the bearings 29 of a tooth. When both seats I 5 of a holder member b have been rendered useless by wear, said member will, of course, be discarded and a new one substituted therefor. Upon reversing either of'the holder members b endwise to bring its previously trailing seat l5 into leading position for the application of a tooth thereto, such member will, of course, be shifted to the opposite side of the hanger bar A.
Among the numerous advantages residing in my present invention are included simplicity and economy of manufacture and the ease of assembly, disassembly and rearrangement of. parts,
which permits the replacing and interchanging of such parts and also the reversal of the companion holder members to provide unworn toothsupporting seats for those which have been impaired through wear. the tooth structure may be practically entirely Worn away-before being rendered useless is an important feature of the invention. In addition to performing its scarifying function, the tooth guards the companion plates of the composite tooth holder at the leading tip portions thereof where the greatest wear is encountered. Theedgewise reversibility of the hanger bar A and the endwise reversibility of the holder membersb simplifies initial assembly of such parts of the sacrifier element and likewise simplifies the subsequent rearrangement of said holder members in the assembly to renew either or both of the,
The meshing or interlocking engagement of the tooth C with both of the holder members I) affords an extremely rigid support for said tooth and, simplifyingthe connection between the tooth and hanger minimizes the effort required in attaching the tooth to and detaching the same from said holder. Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of What is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A scarifier element comprising a hanger bar, an elongated tooth holder for attachment to said hanger bar, and a tooth for attachment to said holder, said hanger bar having a plurality of openings in the lower end thereof, extending therethrough and providing sockets at its opposite sides, said holder consisting of two plate-like members of identical formation, the edge of each member providing a seat at each tip portion of such member, said holder members being adapted to be assembled on the hanger bar in registry, one with the other, with their inner faces facing each other and with the tip portions thereof. at one end of the assembly in aleading position,
each holder member having a plurality of bosses I at its medial portion issuing from its inner face,
a number of such bosses being adapted to fit in v the sockets in either side'of the hanger bar, each I The provision by which faces of the leading tip portions of the assembled holder members, bolts received in said bores in said holder members for securing said members to each other and to the hanger bar, saidattaching tongue having a bore therein to receive the bolt in the leading tip portions of the holder members, said tooth having dual bearings, one at each side of said tongue, each bearing being adapted to bear against the seat at the leading tip portion. of its corresponding holder member, said tooth being detachable from and reattachable to the holder members without the detachment of either of said members from thehanger bar, and said holder members being detachable from the hanger bar and reattachable thereto in relation endwise reversed and transposed relative to the hanger bar for application of the tooth to the previously, trailing tip portions of said members.
2. A scarifier element comprising a hanger bar, an elongated tooth, holder, for attachment to said hanger bar, and a tooth for attachment to 'said holder, said holder consisting of two platelike members of identical formation, means for medially attaching said holder members, in assembled relation, to said hanger bar at opposite members of identical formation, each member having a continuous marginal flange at its outer face lending increased thickness to the member about the edge thereof, said holder members being medially bolted to the hanger bar at opposite sides thereof and in registry, one with the other, with their inner faces spaced apart in facing relationship and with the tip portions thereof extending fore and aft of said hanger bar,
sides of said bar to bring said members into 7 registry, one with the other, with their tip portions at one end of the holder in a leading position, each holder member having a bore therein at each tip portion thereof, said tooth having an attaching tongue issuing therefrom, and receivable between the adjacent faces of the leading tip portions of the assembled holder members,
bolts received in said bores in said holder members, said tongue having a bore therein receiving the boltin the leading tip portions of the holder members, each holder member having a lug at each tip portion thereof, such lugs at the leading tip portions of said members being engaged by thetongue of the tooth and serving to prevent the tooth from pivoting in one direction about the bolt therein, such lugs' at the trailing portions of said holder members serving to space the same'apart, said holder members being detachable from the hanger bar and reattachable thereto in endwise reversed relation for application of the tooth to the previously trailing tip portions of said members.
3. A scarifier element comprising an upright hanger bar, ,an elongated tooth holder and a tooth, said holder consisting of two plate-like the leading tip portions occupying a depressed position, the flanged edge of each member providing aseat at each tip portion of such member, each holder member having a bore in each .tip portion thereof, said tooth-having an attaching tongue issuing therefrom at the rear thereof and receivable between the inner faces of the leading tip portions of the assembled holder members, bolts received in said bores in said holder members, said attaching tongue having a bore therein to receive the bolt in the leading tip portions of the holder members, said tooth having dual thrust bearings, one at each side of said tongue, each bearing seating against theseat at the leading tip portion of its corresponding holder member, said tooth closing the space between said holder members and shielding said members at their leading tip portions, said holder members being detachable from the hanger bar and reattachable thereto in relation endwise reversed and transposed relative to the hanger bar for application of the tooth to the previously trailing tip portions of said members.
4. A scarifier element comprising an upright hanger bar, an elongated tooth holder, and a tooth, said holder consisting of two similarly formed plate-like members, each member having a tip portion, the edge thereof providing a seat, said holder members being bolted to the hanger bar at the opposite sides thereof and in registry, one with the other, with their inner faces spaced apart in facing relationship and with the tip portions thereof extending forwardly of the hanger bar in a leading position, said tooth having dual bearings, each thereof being adapted to bear against the seat at the tip portion of one of the holder members, and means for retaining the tooth in seated position on the tip portions
