RUBBER B OOT AND GAITER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,398, dated .Tune 1, 1880.

To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. H. SANFORD, of New Brunswick, Middlesex county, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in India-Rubber Boots and Gaiters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of an improved contrivance of the straps for the tops of indiaro rubber boots, gaiters, &c., whereby the form is improved with reference to conformity with the shape of the leg, the connection with the boot or shoe top is more substantial, and it presents a neater and more symmetrical appear-ance to the eye than the strap heretofore made on such boots.
Owing to the nature of the india-rubber, the straps cannot be durably sewed on, as they can on leather. Consequently they must be 2o secured by the vulcanizing process, which makes it necessary that a material portion ot' the strap itself shall be rubber. This manner of fastening the straps to the boot top by uniting the rubber portions of each by heat requires considerable breadth of the connect ing-surfaces in order to get the strength of adhesion necessary for the service required; hence loops of cord covered with rubber fail to have sufficient power of adhesion for durability.
This invention therefore consists of abroad strip of rubber, suitably strengthened with muslin or canvas and other lining, and united by rubber cement and heat to the surface of the boot or shoe top, said strip having a hole in the portion above the boot-top of sufficient size for inserting a nger for a strong hold by which to pull on the boot. The strap is thin, and presents a broad flat surface against the leg of the wearer, and is entirely free from the objectionable projections of round cords, which are uncomfortable to the leg and cause in terfcrence upon the inside.

A represents the outside rubber portion of the boot-top, to the inside of which is attached 5o a layer of muslin or canvas, B, by means of rubber cement, and to which the felt inner lining, C, is attached, also by rubber cement.
D is the outer rubber portion of the strap, with a similar layer, E, of muslin, land an inner lining of felt, F, united with rubber cement.
The strap so formed and provided with a corded finger -hole, G, is inserted half its length, or thereabout, between the inner felt 6o lining, C, andthe rest ofthe boot-top, with a suitable application of rubber cement prior to the Vulcanizing process, to which the whole is then subjected, and whereby the strap is sccured to the boot-top, as shown in Fig. 2.
The lining F may also be of rubber, if preferred, or of felt covered with rubber.
I am aware that nger-holes have been made through the legs of india-rubber boots, with cord-stays around the same; but my object is 7o to attach straps made separately and independently of the boot-leg, so that the necessary conditions of size, strength, and other qualities of the materials for the same may be determined and arranged independently of the boot-leg itself, which will naturally differ in these respects from the requirements of the straps.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 8o ent, is-
The improvement in pull-straps for indiarubber boots herein described, consisting of the plain rubber strap D, strengthened with muslin or canvas E, and a lining, F, inserted 8 5 about half its length between, and cemented and vulcanized with the layers of the boot-leg top, and having a finger-hole, G, through the portion projecting above said top, substantially as described.
