These objects and such other objects as will hereinafter appear or be pointed out are attained by the illustrative embodiments of my invention shown in the drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational View of an illustrative embodiment of my invention with portions broken away substantially along the line I--I of Figures 2 and 4 looking in the direction of the arrows;

Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the embodiment of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a plan view of the embodiment of Figure 1 With portions of the shear plate broken away so as to expose the underlying construction and; I

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figures 1 and 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.

Before proceeding to a detailed description of the invention I may describe the same broadly by stating that it comprises a face engaging member that is slidable in relation to an underlying cutter that is carried by a base block and may be termed the xed member. Both the iixed member and the movable member are provided with cutting teeth that are adapted to move across each other in close contact. In order to secure such contact I have shown means for eiectively securing said contact and maintaining it. The construction is an open one so that shaving Waste can not readily accumulate inthe parts thereof so as to clog the same.

Referring now-to the drawingin detail it will be observed that in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive I have 4 shown an embodiment ofmy invention comprising a stationary cutting member I0 and a movable cutting member or shear plate I 2, thelatter being the face engaging member and being superposed on the former. e A

The fixed cutter IIJ is shown as mounted on a base block I4 provided with uprights I6 that serve to carry the'cutter I0. The latter as shown in the drawing may be described as comprising a plate I8 on which are arranged teeth 20 spaced from each other by slots 2| and arranged in two parallel rows. The teeth20 are provided with cutting edges 22 running transversely of the dry shaver.'V

The movable cutter or shear plate I2 is slidably superimposed on' the fixed cutter I0. As shown in the drawing it may beroughlydescribed as shaped like an inverted `W Aand more in detail it may be described as comprising a base plate 24 having on each side thereof a hollow rib 26 running longitudinally of the dry shaver and divided by transverse slots 28 into teeth 30 provided with cutting edges 32.

It will be observed that the slots 28 are shown as extending down the side walls of the ribs 26 and to the upper surface of the base plate 24.

Flanges 34 are shown as extending laterally of each rib.

The teeth 30 of the movable cutter are preferably so pitched and spaced from each other that as many hairs as possible are received in the slots 28 between the teeth. At the same time these slots must not be so wide that the flesh may enter far enough to be injured at the cutting edges. e To eiect the purpose of admitting the greatest number of hairs into the slots 28 these may be made as shown in the drawing with outwardly haring entrance portions.

Although not necessarily so, the teeth of the fixed cutter are shown as of coarser pitch than the teeth 30 of the movable cutter. I have found that this is very desirable in actual practice as the coarser pitch prevents clogging of the slots by the shaving waste to a great degree and by making the pitch of. the teeth of one cutter different frorn that of the other they are not all active at the same time and the cutting effect is distributed uniformly throughout the cycle of operations as diierent teeth come into cooperate action at different times.

The lower Walls of the teeth 35 of the shear plate and the upper walls of the teeth 20 of the fixed cutter are in close contact and are so kept by means described hereinafter so that the cutting edges 22 and 32 may eifect their cutting action eiciently. For the same purpose the side walls of the ribs 26, into which the teeth 30 extend are preferably in close contact with the side walls of the teeth 20.

In order to maintain this contact between the cutting edges the flanges 34 and the plate 24 are shown as slightly spaced from the plate I8 of the fixed cutter so that even if considerable wear of the contacting faces of the teeth takes place, contact thereof is not prevented due to contact of the surfaces of I8, 24 and 34.

At each end of the plate 24 isprovided a downwardly extending member 36 and the two members 36 are joined by a bridge piece 38 provided with openings 40 through which pass the aforementioned uprights I6. The openings 40 are made of sufficient extent so as to permit longitudinal reciprocation of the movable cutter I2 in relation to the fixed cutter I8.

The bridge piece 38 is also shown as provided with an opening 42, adapted to receive the end embodiment of my invention it will be understood that the same may be embodied in many other forms without departing from the spirit thereof, as will be obvious to those skilled in the art, and that the disclosures herein are by Way of illustration merely and are not to be interpreted in a limiting sense, and that I do not limit myself other than as called for by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a dry shaver in combination, a face engaging shear plate provided with two hollow upwardly directed ribs spaced from each other in parallel relation, the upper and the lateral walls of said ribs being slotted transversely so of an actuating lever 44 shown as extending l through the opening 48 in the block I4.

. This lever may be reciprocated in any suitable or desired manner for the purpose of actuating the shaving device.

In order to keep the cutting edges 22 of the xed member and the cutting edges 32 of the movable member in operative contact I have provided means that are illustratively shown in the drawing as comprising spiral tension springs 48 having their ends attached respectively to the bridge pieces 38 and the block I4, as by screws 50 and 52 carried respectively by the pieces 38 and I4 and passing into recesses 54 and 56 respectively, and in these recesses the ends of the springs 48 are accommodated.

While I have herein disclosed an illustrative as to form teeth, each of said teeth being provided with cutting edges, an inverted U-shaped member depending from said shear plate and having openings therein, a base member, uprights on said base member, a cutter carried by said uprights, said cutter being provided with two parallel rows of transversely disposed teeth having cutting edges thereon, each row of teeth being received within the hollow of one of the aforesaid ribs of the shear plate, and being slidable in relation thereto, means for drawing said shear plate against said cutter, and means for actuating said shear plate.

2. In a dry shaver, a face engaging cutting member having a pair of spaced cutting areas each positioned at the top of an inverted channeled member and a flange projecting laterally outward from each of said channeled members, and a second cutting member of a shape complementary to the top of said first cutting member and adapted to support said rst cutting member for sliding movement thereon, and means for effecting relative sliding movement of said members.
