Description
G. MILES. Carriage-Top Rest.
Hmm iii 'liiiFTiT MPETERS, PHOTO LITHOGRAPHEH WASHlNuTON o C NrrED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GIDEON MILES, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES E. REEVES, OF SAME PLACE.
CARRIAGE-TOP REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,211, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed February 4, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIDEON MILES, of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in extension-arms and metallic cushioned bow-rests for the rest of buggy-bows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fender-rests for the bows of vehicle or buggy tops; and it consists of a fender of peculiar construction formed upon the bearing-arm of a vehicle, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2
represents a bottom view of the same, and
Fig. 3 a transverse section thereof.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the rail, to which the Vehicletop is connected. It is provided with bearing-arms B, one at each back corner, extending outward from the rail and forming the main support of the brace or lever which holds the top up. This bearing-arm B is provided with projecting wings O 0, one on each side, forming a broad bearing-surface on the top for the support of the cushioned bowrest D, said wings being formed solid upon the bearing-arms by welding, or may, if deemed preferable, be cast separate and attached to the arm by ascrew, a, passing upward through the arm, as shown in Fig. 2, the under side of the arm being made rounding to form a finish, and either painted or covered with leather or other suitable material.
The cushioned bow-rest D is formed of a flat metallic plate, E, upon the top of which is placed a layer or two of felt, rubber, or other suitable elastic material, and the whole .covered with finished leather, said metallic plate E being adapted to fit smoothly upon the broad surface of the arm B, to which it is secured by means of screws F, which pass through the wings G into the plate, as shown in Fig. 3.
The end of the bearing-arm B is provided with a suitable nut to secure the brace or lever which holds the top in position, and the cushioned rest D, as already described, serves as an elastic support or hearing for the bows when suddenly falling or thrown down from an upright position.
I am aware of the patent granted to H. K. Porter under date of October 23, 1877, and numbered 196,477, and do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, a metallic cushioned bow-rest; but,
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. The herein-described fender-rest for the bows of vehicle or buggy tops, consisting of the bearing-arm B, provided with wings O O, and the cushioned bow-rest D, provided with a metallic plate, E, and elastic packing and covering, secured to the wings G O, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the cushioned bowrest D, formed of the metallic plate E and elastic packing and covering, with the wings O (J on the arm B of the rail A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GID EON MILES.
Witnesses SYLvEsrER H. READ, SANFORD READ.
