The swab l comprisesa hollow handle I8 having a partition l9 therein adjacent its open end toform afliquid reservoir 20. Disposed within the liquid reservoir 2|] and extending across the interior thereof is a sleeve 2| provided with apertures 22 and internal screw-threads 23 at its opposite ends to accommodate threaded plugs 24 and 25 adapted to tightly retain the sleeve within the liquid reservoir 20, the former of which is provided with a hole 26 adapted to receive the valve stem l2 of the liquid reservoir 6 while the latter of which is solid and acts as an abutment for an expansion coil spring 21 within the sleeve which causes a sliding valve 28 also within the sleeve to bear against the inner end of the plug 24 and close the hole therein when in normal or closing position of the reservoir 20.
Disposed in the partition l9 are spaced liquid exit ports 28 provided with spring outlet valves 29 having head valve-stems 30 extending therefrom toward the open end of the handle and ter minating against the inner wall 31 of head 32, pivoted as at 33 and carrying a suitable swabbing element 34, said wall 3| is preferably of convex configuration and is provided with apertures 35 to permit the liquid passing through the ports 28 to readily flow into the swabbing element.
With the liquid reservoir 6 and fountain swab I constructed as aforesaid, the valves-l3, 28 and 30 are normally held in closedipositions and,. upon inserting the valve stem [2 of the liquid reservoir 6 into the hole 26 of the plug 24,the
head I! of the valve-stem IE will contactand depress the valve 28 whereupon said valves'l3 and 28 will open and allow the liquid to flow from the reservoir 6 into the reservoir 20 until the level thereof closes the port M in the valve-stem thus stopping flow of the liquid with the valve l3 in open position.
Upon removing the swab "I from cooperative filling relation with the liquid reservoirfi the valve 28 will close under pressure of spring 21 and seal the opening 26 in the plug 24.
During operation of the swab over material to be treated the pivoted head 32 thereof will rock in the free end of the handle and cause the valves 29 to open whereupon the liquid within the handle will flow into the swabbing material through the apertures 35 in the convex wall of the head In order to obtain liquid from the reservoir 5 when the swab is detached therefrom it is simply necessary to press inwardly on the valve-stem l6 and the valve l3 will open. 7
While the swab 1 is herein shown as being cylindrical in cross section, it may be of any desired configuration capable of practicing the invention also the liquid reservoir 6 may be of any desired form and supported in any manner permitting the salient functions of the combination to be carried out.
With this invention fully set forth it is manifest that means are provided whereby cleaning of materials and analogous functions can be successfully performed quickly with the minimum degree of effort and, through the simplicity of the embodiment set forth, the cost of manufacture thereof will permit selling the same at a nominal price.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a liquid storage reserhas reached a predetermined level in the handle.
2. The combination of a liquid storage reservoir, a support therefor, a fountain swab having I its reservoir removably engaged with the storage reservoir, and means stopping the flow of liquid from the former into the latter while in filling relation by a predetermined level of liquid in the latter.
3. The combinationof a liquid storage reservoir including a valved discharge nozzle and air vent leading therefrom above the level of liquid therein, a fountain swab including a hollow handle and a spring closed inlet valve engaged and opened by the nozzle of the storage reservoir, a support carrying the storage reservoir, resilient means carried by the support and removably retaining the valves of the nozzle and handle in open positions when the handle is in filling relation with the storage reservoir and an apertured sleeve within the handle surrounding the valve thereof forming communications between the reservoir thereof and nozzle, the uppermost aperture being elongated and disposed in the region of the lower end of the vent in the nozzle.
l. A swab comprising a hollow handle, a partition in the handle adjacent its open end and having spaced ports therein, spring pressed outlet valves in the ports of the partition, an apertured dish-shaped head pivotally secured at diametric opposite points in the open end of the handle adjacent the valves, a swabbing element carried by the head, valve-stems formed on the valves and bearing on the inner dish-shaped wall of the pivoted head and a filling valve communicating with the interior of the handle.
