3 Claims. (01. 242-114) This invention relates to a reel for use in holding a bundle of wire as it is being fed toa spring 3 making machine, for winding a bundle on, for
fiat stock, etc.
The invention especially enables quick change from one bundle to another in order to save time,
- one to each screw member 2| and 22 and all are and it aims to accommodate any size bundle and to provide accordingly a construction which is adjustable, self-centering, and one in which the, bundle of wire automatically centers itself ,to
make a smooth running reel.
.The more specific objects and advantages will becom apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative I embodiment.
In said drawing: a
Figure 1 is a viewin side elevation ofthe structure;
t Figure 2 is a plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, a cast iron or other relatively heavy base is provided at In adjustably and detachably mounting a reel standard. I! ata hub l2, fas
tened in place by a screw l3.
The standard II has a reduced portion at the upper extremity, providing a shoulder at I5. The reel is generally designated l6, having a hollow hub H, which is journaled on the reduced portion l4 and rests on the shoulder I5. Such hub H has a removable cover or closure 18 screwed in place as at l9. v
' The reel also hasan'outer ring 20 and such ring and hub H are rigidly connectedtogether by means of rods orspokes at 20a.
Screw shafts 2| and 22 have their ends journaled in the hub I1. and in bearings 2 la depending from the ring 2|], the screw threads of the screws 2| preferably being right hand and those of the screws 22 preferably being left hand. Upright arms 23 are screw threaded one on each screw 2| and 22 and the rods 20a pass therethrough so as to hold the arms in upright positions; Extension arms 24 are pivoted or bolted at25 to the whereby the same may be detachably engaged by a wrench or crank 21, as suggested in Figure 1.
Within the hub l1, beveled gears 28 are keyed enmeshed as best shown in Figure 4.
In using the device, the wire is laid on and supported by the rods 20a outwardly of the arms 23. Any one of the screw members 2| and 22 may be turned by thecrank 21, in order to simultaneously turn all of such members and thereby simultaneously and to the same extent move the arms 23 outwardly into engagement with the wire. Likewise to release the wire the crank may be turned in the opposite direction to move the arms inwardly. The auxiliary or extension arms 24 may be moved to any desired angle with a view to aiding in retaining the wire on the arms 23.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit andv scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A structure of the class described comprising a standard, a reel swivelled on the standard comprising a hub, screw members mounted by the hub, interengaged gearing carried by the screw members at the hub, wire engaging arms movably mounted by the screw members, an outer ring in which the screw members are journaled, and rods connecting the hub and outer ring passing through the arms to maintain the latter upright and also serving to support wire.
2. A structure of the class described comprising a standard, a reel swivelled on the standard comprising a hub, screw members mounted by the hub; interengaged gearing carried by the] screw members at the hub, wire engaging arms movably mounted by the screw members, an outer ring in which the screw members are journaled, rods connecting the hub and outer ring passing. through the arms to maintain the latter upright and also serving to support wire, bearings connected to the outer ring in which the screw members are directly journaled, one of the screw members having a tool engaging end to facilitate rotation thereof, and a support for the standard.
3. A structure of the class described comprising a reel having a hub, screw members mounted by the hub, interengaged gearing for the screw members at the hub, wire engaging arms movablymounted by the screw members, an outer ring in which the screw members are journaled, and rods connecting the hub and outer ring passing through the .arms to maintain the latter upright and also serving to support wire.
