Application May 19, 1941, Serial No. 394,212
2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in lighting equipment for cigarettes and the like, the principal object in view being to equip a cigarette, or cigar, inexpensively with readily accessible and manipulative means of a quick detachable nature for use in lighting the same.
Other, and subordinate, objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a cigarette equipped in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in end elevation,
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view of the match igniting strip showing the inner striking surface thereof,
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of the match, detached, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a modified embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, according to my invention, in its preferred embodiment, the usual cigarette I is equipped at one end thereof with a short narrow strip 2 of match igniting paper of the usual type, having one side coated with a match striking composition 3. The strip 2 is detachably secured to the end of the cigarette I to extend along the cigarette parallel therewith by gluing one end of the strip, as at 4, to the end of the cigarette I, the coated face of the strip being next to the cigarette. A miniature match 5 of the usual type having a paper stem is detachably secured at its butt end, as by glue represented at 6, to the other end of the strip 2, the arrangement being such that the match 5 is co-extensive in length with that of the strip 2 and extends centrally along the outer or uncoated side of said strip.
In the modified embodiment of the invention, a strip 1 and match 8 are detachably secured together as indicated at I2 in the same manner as described with reference to the preferred embodiment of the invention and the strip 1 is secured to the band 9 of a cigar I0, as by gluing the appropriate end of the strip, as at I I, to one edge of the band 9.
The manner in which the described invention is used will be readily understood. When it is desired to light the cigarette I, or cigar III, as the case may be, the strip 2, or I, with the match attached thereto, is pulled loose from the cigarette or cigar, the match 5, or I, is pulled loose from the strip, the strip held, as for instance, by the thumb and forefinger in a convenient position, and the match struck thereon.
A particular advantage of the invention is that each and every cigarette, or cigar, is equipped with readily accessible and easily manipulative means for lighting the same and which is compactly attached to the cigarette or cigar so as not to interfere with packaging of the same, and the equipment may be provided without materially increasing the cost of the cigarette or cigar.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart :a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention is susceptible of modifi-cation in other respects than as herein set forth, and right is herein reserved to such other modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. Lighting equipment for a cigarette or the like comprising a strip of match striking material having one side face thereof coated with a match striking composition, means at one end of the strip for adhesively attaching the same to a cigarette, and a safety match of the same length as said strip extending along the other side face of the same and having the butt end thereof adhesively attached to the other end of the strip.
2. Lighting equipment for a cigarette or the like comprising a strip of match striking material having one sideface thereof coated with a match striking composition, means at one end of the strip for adhesively attaching the same to a cigarette, and a safety match of the same length as said strip extending along the other side face of the same and having the butt end thereof adhesively attached to the other end of the strip, said means being on the coated side face of the strip, and said match being attached to the other side of said strip.
LOUIS E. BOUCHER.
