Application April 2 5, 1940,: Serial-No.'331,6"71 I 1 Claim.
My invention relates to steam pressure cookers of the type exemplified in my co-pending application Serial No. 183,531, filed January 5, 1938, and over which the instant invention is designed as an improvement.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a steam pressure cooker equipped with means for sealing a cover thereto which is greatly simplified in construction as compared with that of said co-pending application, easier to operate, and less expensive to manufacture, and which at the same time is eflicient and reliable in operation and will not get out of order as for instance, through wear on the parts.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, set forth in the succeeding description, and defined in the claim appended hereto.
In said drawings:
Figure l is a view in side elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in bottom plan of the cover detached,
Figure 3 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in side elevation and showing the cover in unlocked condition.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, my improved cooker, as in the case of my co-pending application, embodies a preferably cylindrical receptacle I having a reinforced rim 2 forming an outwardly flaring mouth 3, and a dome-shaped, circular cover 4 having an annular depending edge flange 5 downwardly tapering to fit with a wedging action in said mouth 3. The cover flange 5, in the instant invention, has mortised, or countersunk, into the outer circumferential wall thereof an annular gasket 6 of band-like form and suitable resilient material, the gasket being arranged in the flange to flare downwardly and outwardly so that its lower edge extends out of said circumferential wall to seat in the mouth 3, said edge being beveled to fit in said mouth fiush therewith.
A locking bail l is pivoted, as at 8, to a pair of ears 9 riveted, as at 10, to diametrically opposite sides of the receptacle 1, the ears upstanding alongside the rim 2, the bail being vertically swingable into and from a locking upstanding position in which it spans the cover 4. The bail 1 comprises a central tubular hand grip l I, a pair of curved side bars l2, and a bolt l3 securing the grip between the outer ends of said bars for rotation between the same all as in said co-pending application.
According to the instant invention, a single unitary member I4 is mounted on the cover 4 for cooperation with bail I to force said cover home in the mouth 3 into tightly sealed position, and for cooperation with said bail 1 and cover 4 to lock the bail in locking position.
The member l4 has the form of a yoke having a base bar pivoted at its opposite ends, as at IE, to a pair of ears I! upstanding from the, cover 4 on opposite sides of the center thereof, a pair of side arms [8 and a transversely concave cross Y bar i9 adapted to seat the hand grip ll therein,
the axis of the pivots It being parallel and vertically aligned with the axis of swinging movement of the bail I. As best shown in Figures 3, 4, the member l4 and bail 1 are constructed and arranged so that they may be swung in one direction into vertical dead center position with the hand grip ll seated in the cross bar IS, in which position, because of the vertically offset relation of the axes of movement of the bail I and said member I4, and the difference in the arc of movement of hand grip II and bar 19, said hand grip bears downwardly on said bar to exert a downward thrust on the member I4 and thereby force the cover downwardly. As will be seen, the gasket 6 yieldingly resists such downward movement of the cover 4.
A stop lug 20 is provided on the base bar [5 of member l4 to extend laterally therefrom and engage the top of the cover 4 under further swinging of said bail l and member Him the aforesaid direction slightly past said dead center position, whereby said bail is held in locked position against movement in either direction. In
this locked position of the parts the gasket 6 reacts against the mouth 3 to maintain a tight seal between the cover and mouth.
To unlock the bail I, it is merely necessary to swing the same reversely, together with the member 14 sufilciently past dead center position for tne hand grip llv to swing out of the bar IS. The bail I may then be swung down against one side of the receptacle l to clear the cover 4, and the member I l may be allowed to drop flat against the cover 4 in an out of the way position. The bar l9 of member [4 may then be used as a hand grip to remove the cover 4 and replace the same when desired. I
A suitable pressure gage 2| is provided on the cover 4, also a safety valve 22.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
In a steam pressure cooker, a receptacle having a downwardly converging mouth, a cover adapted to seat downwardly in said mouth, and means to force said cover downwardly into seated position comprising a bail pivoted adjacent its ends to said receptacle for vertical swinging movement over said cover into and from upstanding position, and a yoke-like memberlpivotedon said cover for vertical swinging movement into upstanding position within the confines of said bail about an axis parallel with the axis of movement of said bail and having a concave cross bar adapted to be interlocked with said bail under swinging of said bail and member into upstanding position, said bail and member being swingable into dead center position and having their axes of swinging movement vertically spaced in a common substantially vertical plane whereby under swinging thereof into dead center position said bail exerts downward pressure on said member to force said cover home in said seat, said bail and member being swingable in interlocked relation slightly past dead center position and said member being provided with a lateral base lug for abutting the top of said cover whereby the bail and member may be locked against swinging in either direction after said cover is forced home.
