' 4ClaimS. (01. 110-101) My invention relates to stokers, and particularly to the mount-ing means thereof and the con trol therefor.
In the copending application of Frederick W. Vodoz, Serial No. 267,841, filed April 14, 1939, and assigned to the assignee of the present invention, and in the United States Patent No. 1,863,677, issued June 21, 1932 to F. W. Vodoz, a stoker of the over-feed type is illustrated, described and claimed, forming aself-contained mobile unit. The control for the unit embodies an arm which rests upon the injected fuel which lowers as the fuel burns until such time as a switch is actuated to energize the stoker driving motor. 'I'hereupon a cycle of operation results, including the advancement of a shovel into the fire box, the raising of the control arm, and the movement of an injector within the shovel to deliver the fuel from the shovel end. Thereafter,
the injector and shovel are returned to their ini-- tial position and the switch is operated in the reverse direction to open the circuits to the motor 1 with the control arm again resting upon the fuel.
My present invention embodies the combination of elements forming the adjustable supporting base of the stoker which is mounted on wheels, and the combination of levers and elements which move the control arm and a looking foot into operative and inoperative positions. The control arm is retained in raised position through the manipulation of the lever which also :raises the foot to have the stoker supported entirely on the wheels as a mobile unit. After the stoker has been moved 'into position with the arm raised 'so as. to readily enter the opening of the furnace, the lever is manipulated to operate through links to release the arm which is then free to rest upon the fuel in the bed of the imnace and to actuate the foot to raise the stoker from the single rearmost wheel to thereby prevent the stoker from moving.
The base of the stoker embodies a downwardly presented channel element across the front end having the web bent downwardly to provide a support for a pair of front wheels. A U-shaped channel element has the ends of the legs welded to the front cross member and means are provided on the rear end for supporting a caster stoker body. In view of the adjustability of the stoker body in height on the base, the control link for the foot is likewise adjustable.
Accordingly, the main objects of my invention are; to provide a link system for the control arm of a stoker by which the arm may be disposed in raised position when the stoker is moved to and from the furnace; to provide a foot for the base of the stoker which raises a, wheel from the floor to retain the stoker in position; to interconnect the control arm and positioning foot with a lever system by which they are actuated into. operative and inoperative positions; to form a base for a stoker of a front cross element supporting a pair of wheels and a U-shaped element secured thereto having a caster wheel thereon; to provide a box section base standard on the U-shaped base element having a plurality of openings therein which permit the adjustment of the stoker in height on the base; to provide a support embodying a, base formed of a U-shaped channel element attached to a cross member having side plates projecting therefrom containing a plurality of apertures and which are interconnected near the bottom to provide a box section base standard on which a pair of side plates which support the stoker are adjustably secured; and in general, to provide a base support anda link system for interconnecting the positioning foot and control arm of a stoker which are relatively adjustable, simple in construction, and economical of manufacture.
Other objects and features of novelty of my invention will be either specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of my invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stoker having a base and control mechanism embodying features of my invention;

A pair of side plates are secured to the base which are joined at the rear by a forwardly disposed plate and at the front by an angularly disposed plate to form a box section base standard. In Fig. 1, I have illustrated a stoker embodying a hopper II. mounted on a housing I2 in which the operating slides are disposed and which have been described and illustrated in the above-mentioned application and patent. A motor I3 supported, on the underside of the housing l2, operates the mechanism through a worm reduction unit- I4. The nose I5 of the housing is provided with a plate I6 by which the end of the nose is sealed into the opening of a furnace as illustrated in Fig. 2. The housing I2 is supported on oppositely disposed stampings I1 which are adjustably supported on a base I8 mounted on a pair of spaced front wheels I9 and a rear caster wheel 2I.
The base I8 embodies a downwardly presented channel element 22 having the web 23 thereof deflected downwardly at the ends to form a support for the wheels I9 on studs 24 projecting from the webs. A U-shaped channel element 25 has its ends 26 deflected outwardly in engagement with the web of the channel element 22 and welded or otherwise secured thereto. The rear end 21 of the U-shaped element 25 supports a caster wheel 2| in the conventional manner. A base standard 28 is supported on the base I8 and is formed of web-like stampings 29 at each side having an inwardly directed flange disposed on the web of the U-shaped element 25 to which it is welded. The lateral flanges on the stampings .29 are interconnected near the base by a plate 3I at the rear and by an angularly disposed stamping 32 on the front. The resulting box sectional structure provides material strength to the base standard 28 which supports the stoker.
The pair of oppositely disposed stampings 29 are provided with a plurality of spaced aligned apertures 33 through which bolts 34 in the stamp ings I! of the housing I2 project to selectively position the height of the stoker relative to a furnace opening. The base formed in this manner is simple in construction, neat in appearance, and
is exceptionally rigid, while providing adjustability in height to the stoker proper.
Near the end 21 of the U-shaped channel elemetn 25, an angle shaped bracket 35 is mounted on a pivot 36. Preferably the bracket is provided with a floor engaging element 31 of rubber or like material for engaging the floor on which the stoker is disposed. The bracket 35 carries a pivoted ring 38 through which the end of the offset lever 39 projects for sliding and angular movement relative to the foot. The offset portion of the lever 39 is pivoted in a stirrup 4| mounted on the base. An adjustable link 42 connects the opposite end of the offset lever 39 to a bell crank 43 pivoted on the stud 44 on the side of the housing I2 within the stamping IT.
A control arm 45 is pivoted on the end of the nose I5 of the stoker on a pivot 15 on which a door 46 is mounted to close the front end of the nose. The pivot 15 has a pair of links 16 and 11 attached thereto and to each other in rigid triangular relation. The link 16 is mounted on the pivot 75 at one'end and is connected by pivot 18 to the link 11, the opposite end of which link is secured in one of a plurality of apertures 19 of the arm by a screw 8|. The pivot 18 operates in a slot 82 in a vertically disposed branch 83 of a link 49. The longitudinal branch 84 of the link 49 is provided with a slot 85 "for receiving a bracket 86 extending from the side ofthe nose I5, which bracket supports the link 49 while permitting the link to move lengthwise of the nose. Theforward movement of the link operates through the pivot 18 in the slot 82 to raise the arm 45 about the pivot 15. Through the adjustment of the screw 8| in the apertures-19 of the arm, the position of the arm relative to the link 49 is adjusted. In this arrangement the pivot 15 is below the top of the nose I5 of the stoker and clearance is provided with the furnace opening to'permit the insertion of the nose thereinto.
When a shovel 41, disposed within the housing I2, is advanced during an injector operation the door 46 is cammed upwardly, carrying the arm 45 upwardly therewith as illustrated in Fig.
2. After the injection of the fuel within the' fire box and the retraction of the shovel 41, the door 46 moves to closed position, dropping the arm 45 on top of the fuel. As the fuel burns, the arm lowers until such time as the links I6 and TI operate the link 49 sufliciently to actuate a mercury switch 5! carried thereby to again complete the circuit to the motor l3 to produce another cycle of operation to the stoker. 1
Whenthe stoker is not in use, the arm 45 would normally be in lowered position and would require manual raising to dispose the arm on the fuel in theme box of the furnace. I have therefore provided, when the stoker is moved into position therewith, a unique lever system which retains the arm .in raised position when the stoker is not operating and which also raises the foot 31 out of contact with the floor. When the stoker has been moved into a position of operation with the furnace, as illustrated in Fig. 2,
the' operation of the lever and link system releases the control arm 45 to permit it to rest upon the fuel in the fire box and at the same time forces the foot 31 downwardly against the to closed circuit position when the arm 53 is outof contact with the cam block 52. The side plate 51 of the housing I2 has an aperture 58 therein through which the cam block 52 projects to engage the arm 53. At the end of the reverse movement of the shovel, the cam block 52 engages the arm 53 to rotate the switch 5| to cir- Cllit open position against the bias of the spring 5 In this position, the arm 45 rests upon the fuel in the fire box and as the arm moves downwardrear carrying the switch therewith until such position as the arm 53 moves away from the cam block 52 whereupon through the bias' of the spring 55 the switch 5| is tilted to closed position. Thereupon, a cycle of operation occurs to again provideifuel in the fire box upon which the arm 45 rests with the switch moved to open poly, as the fuel burns, the link 49 is moved to the closed circuit position, through the movement of the arm 53 from the cam block 52.
The opposite end 6| of the link 99-from that forming the vertical branch 83 is reduced in height and mounted for sliding movement in an aperture 92 in the flange of the stamping H. A link 93 has an offset portion 64 and an end portion 65 which is likewise reduced in height to extend over the portion 6| of the link 49 through the aperture 62. The opposite end portion of the link 63 extends through an elongated slot 65 in the opposite flange of the stamping El and is pivoted at 61 to a link 68 which is pivoted at 69 to the side of the housing I2 to provide a toggle relation with the'link-63. The slot E2 in the bell crank permits the assem bly of the link on the bell crank. By providing the mated portions 6| and 65 on the ends of the links 69 and 53, the arm is free to operate when the lever 68 has been moved to operate the foot 31 into contact with the floor, as illustrated in Fig. 3. In this position the separation of the ends of the mated portions 6| and 65, permits the complete downward movement of the arm 45 independently of the link 63. When the stoker is to be moved from the furnace the operation of the link 58, 180 degrees from the position illustrated in Fig. 3 to the position illustrated in Fig; 5, will move the links 63 and 49 forwardly to raise'the arm 45 into substantially horizontal position. This movement rotates the bell crank 43 to thereby raise the foot 31 from the fioor, lowering the caster wheel 2| thereon so that the stoker may then be rolled away from the furnace. By having the arm 45 extended in horizontal position in alignment with the top of the nose |5, the nose and arm may be moved into and out of the furnace without interference with the walls of the opening thereof. The position of the arm 45, switch 5|, cam block 52, and the switch arm 53 when in this position are clearly illustrated in Fig. 9.
In Fig. 6 it will be noted that the nose l5 has a channel stamping 80, the ends of the sides 99 of which mate with the flanges of a top'plate 81 toform ridges 88 havinga-plurality of apertures 89 therein. The plate IS on the nose of the stoker has a central opening 9| conforming to the shape of the ridges, stamping 80 and the top plate 81. As illustrated more specifically in Fig. 12, pivoted hooks 92 adjacent the upper corners of the opening 9| may be projected into an aperture 89 of the ridges to thereby lock the plate on to the nose at a predetermined point along the length thereof. The ends of the hooks within the apertures are so formed as to permit the plate to tilt so as to conform with the slope of the marginal edge of the door opening of the fire box.
The opening 9| of the plate H5 is longer horizontally than the height of the nose to provide a space between the plate and the bottom of the nose to permit such tilting. A sinuously shaped sealing element 93 is supported on the lower side of the opening to abut against the bottom of 'the nose and form a seal in any angular position of the plate therewith. A window 94 is provided at one side of the opening 9| covered by a pivoted door 95 to permit the fire to be examined without removing the stoker from operating position. A.

ing secured to the nose between the flanges of the plate 8'! and the sides 86 of the channel stamping to form with the flanges and side of the ridges 88. The seal |i|3 extends down over the ends of the shovel 41, the sides of which carry a strip I04 over which the seal projects and abuts therewith. By this arrangement, the fuel particles are prevented from being forced outwardly over the top side edges of the shovel which would produce wear and dust about the stoker.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a base and lever system for the stoker which is of unique construction. The base is made of light stampings, provided with rows of apertures, permitting the adjustment of the stoker in height thereon. The link system provided on the side of the stoker operates the control arm to a horizontal position while lowering the wheel-of thebase to the floor through the raising of the locking foot therefrom. This permits the stoker to be moved from the furnace Without interference when the control arm and nose is moved through the furnace opening. The reverse movement of the lever operates through links to release the control arm after the stoker has been disposed in position relative to the furnace and at the same time raises the caster wheel from the floor through the movement of the locking foot into engagement therewith. 1
While I have'described and illustrated but a single embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art, that various changes, omissions, additions and substitutions may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as set forth in the accompanying claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a stoker, the combination with a foot movable downwardly to contact the floor and prevent the stoker from moving, a control arm freely swingable on said stoker, a switch operated by lowering of said control arm, and a link system releasably engageable with the control arm for raising it into inoperative position and for operating the foot to likewise move it into inoperative position, the reverse movement of said system moving said foot to engage the floor while releasing said arm.
