The bolts in the flanges of the flask sections are then removed and the top half of the flask lifted off by means of a crane. hoist or other suitable lifting apparatus. The flask section has a very pronounced tendency to adhere to the ingot mold casting. However, the top section is readily lifted off as the Combined weight of the ingot mold, sand, and lower section of the flask is sumcient to break the bond between the sand and the upper half of the flask as it is lifted by the crane hoist.
To remove the lower section of the flask the usual practice is to engage the ingot mold casting, with hooks suspended from the crane hoist, lift it and the lower flask section slightly above floor level, and then repeatedly app y sledge hammer blows to the flange of the lower flask section until it drops away from the ingot mold casting and thuscompletes the separation of the parts.

At the time the above separating operation is performed, the ingot mold casting is still red hot and the flask assembly is at a high temperature. The sledging operation often requires the services of several men before removal of the lower flask section is effected, and is a particularly arduous task on account of the physical effort involved in the sledging and the extreme heat to which the workmen are subjected.
sledging has been resorted to in the past in preference to rolling the assembly over to dispose the remaining half flask section on top of the ingot .mold casting, where it could be removed in the same way that the other flask section was removed. The reason this practice has been followed is that the rolling operation requires more floor space than is sometimes availthe lower section of flask from able and the time required is less economical than the sledging operation.
The present invention aims to eliminate the costly and arduous manual labor required to free the ingot mold casting, to accomplish this result without increasing floor space requirements, and to enable the foundry to perform the work in less time than heretofore required.
The invention also aims to provide a stripping device so constructed and arranged that it will translate the weight of the object being stripped into the force required to effect the stripping.
A further aim is to provide a lever. system which, by means of the mechanical advantage incorporated therein, translates the weight of the 'mold, sand, and flask section into a force sufficient to break the flask section free, and to provide means to apply this developed force in a manner to eflect stripping.
The above and other features of the invention which are defined with particularity in the appended claims, will be fully understood from the following detailed disclosure when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved stripping device shown in'the act of engaging an ingot mold casting and the lower flask section at the beginning of the stripping stroke.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of a part shown in Figure 1, with the ingot mold and lower flask section shown in section.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the stripping device shown in the position which it assumes at the end of the stripping stroke.

Figure 5 is an end elevation with parts shown in section as in Figure 2, but showing the parts of the stripping device in the positions they assume at the completionof the stripping stroke.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the stripping device consists of .a rigid yoke l constructed to span the ingot mold casting when feet 2 of the yoke rest upon the upper flanged face of the lower flask section containing the casting. Pins 3 are positioned in the yoke I to limit the travel of a movable yoke-like frame 4 by projecting into slots 5 in yoke l. The yoke 4 is moved in relation to yoke l by means of levers 8 which rock about fulcrums I and act through rollers 8 upon the flat upper surfaces 9 of yoke l. The levers 1 are connected through links it to a ring H by means of which the stripping device is susso great that it is pended from the hook of a suitable hoist carried by an overhead crane. A hook l2 having a jaw I3 is movably engaged by means of pin II to clevis l5 which is securely bolted to the movend of the casting and feet 2 of yoke I resting on the flanges of the lower flask section. When the crane raises ring ll the frame 4 and yoke I are moved apart by the force developed from the weight of the assembly reacting through the lever system. The mechanical advantage of the lever system and. the distance through which it is permittsd to act develops sumcient power and movement to free the casting from the fiasksection.
A particular advantage of this stripping device is that no outside source of power is required to develop the force necessary to effect stripping. The load on the crane, from which the device is suspended, is entirely independent from the stripring force developed, being merely the weight of the stripper and the ingot mold casting, sand, and flask section lifted.
Whil I have described quite precisely the details of a specific embodiment of the invention Y appended claims.
I claim: 1. A device for stripping a casting from a flask section of the mold in which it was cast consisting of a yoke including mold engaging legs connected by a body portion adapted to straddle the mold, a frame connected to the body portion of the yoke with freedom for limited movement relative thereto, a pair of levers pivoted to said frame and arranged to react against said yoke, a suspension member adapted to be supported from an overhead hoist, respective links connecting said levers with said suspension member, and a casting-engaging element depending from said frame at a point between said legs.
2. A device for stripping a casting from a flask section of the mold in which it was cast, consisting of an inverted U-shaped yoke having mold engaging legs connected by a body portion adapted to straddle the mold, a frame having a pin and slot connection with the body portion of the yoke so as to permit of limited .relative movement between th frame and the yoke, a,
pair of levers pivoted symmetrically on opposite sides of the median portion of said frame, said yoke having flat surfaces on its upper extremity -at locations circularly spaced on opposite sides of the vertical median axis thereof, said levers carrying respective rollers adapted to engage the I said surfaces on the yoke, a suspension member adapted to be supported from an overhead hoist,
links pivoted respectively to the suspension members and to said levers, anda, casting engaging element pivotally suspended from said frame and having a hooked portion formed on its lower extremity adapted to enter the cavity in a casting to be stripped from the mold.
