Application March 14, 1941, Serial No. 383,269
' 4 Claims.
This invention relates to lantern slide folders.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved lantern slide folder by means of which lantern slides or other transparencies may be readily handled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lantern slide folder including a novel hinge member.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel apparatus for making a lantern slide folder.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a folder embodying the features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section taken on line 2-2 Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the apparatus and method of assembly;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a model apparatus;
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 55, Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 4;
Fig. 7 is an end view of the device'shown in Fig. 4; and
Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 88 of Fi 4.
Referring to the drawing by reference character, I have shown my invention as embodied in a lantern slide folder which is indicated generally at [0. As shown, the folder consists of a plurality of lantern slide holders ll although the members ll may be of the character to support transparencies or other material differing from lantern slides.
Each folder includes a front panel l2 and a rear panel I3 with the panels aligned and with the panels having aligned apertures l4 therein.
The panels l2 and [3 are suitably secured together by glue disposed between their marginal edges and they support a lantern slide member which might be a color film l5 by engagement with the edges thereof.
The holders II are secured together in hinged relation by an upper adhesive strip or tape I6 and a lower adhesive strip or tape ll. These strips l6 and I1 engage the front and rear faces of the holders and also engage the top and bottom edges thereof.
The holders are arranged with spaces 18 therebetween and the strips I6 and H are folded, as shown in Fig. 2, to extend into the spaces l8 until the inner surfaces IQ of the strip engage as shown in Fig. 2 and thus form hinges permitting the folder to be manipulated.
In order to manufacture the folder economically and accurately I provide an apparatus indicated at 20, Fig. 3, which includes a base 2| having an upwardly extending portion 22 thereon. Portion 22 includes a longitudinal extending slot 23 which is of uniform depth throughout and which is of a width to receive the holders II.
In operation the holders are arranged in the slot 23 and a cord 24 is threaded about the holders as shown in Fig. 3 to properly space the holders. The upper tape 16 is thus secured in place, and the assembly including the holders and the tape 16 and with the cord 24 still in place is then removed from the slot 23 and placed back in the slot with the taped portion disposed in the slot. The tape I1 is then secured to the exposed edges to complete the folder and thereafter the folder is removed from the slot 23 and the string 24 withdrawn.
In Figs. 4 to 8 inclusive I show a modification of my folder making apparatus which is indicated generally at 30. As shown the apparatus includes a base 3| which at each end includes an upwardly projecting portions 32 having oppositely projecting flanges 33. The flanges are spaced to provide shoulders 34. I
The portions 32 are slotted as at 32' to receive a flexible spring-like slide 35. At the left in Fig. 4, the walls defining the slots 32 have their inner faces bevelled as at 3? to engage a rounded end 38 on the slide 35.
Extending upwardly from the base I show a plurality of U-shaped guide members 39 which may be soldered in place and which are spaced apart a distance equaled to the width of a lantern slide holder 40 as shown in Fig. 4. The upper face of the base 3| is bevelled as at 4|, Fig. 6 so that when the slide member 35 is pushed forwardly the forward end thereof will be raised thus allowing the lantern slide holders to be inserted.
In operation the lantern slide holders 46 are arranged as shown in Fig. 4 and the lower edges 4| of the flanges 33 are engaged on a plane surface. This causes the holders 4!) to be aligned. A strip of tape indicated in dot-dash line at 42 in Fig. 4 is arranged so that the inner edge thereof engages the shoulder 34 on the member 3|. One face of the strip is then secured in place upon one side of the holders and the strip is then wrapped around the holders and secured to the other face thereof thus finishing the taping along one side.
The member 30 is then moved so that the opposite flanges 33 engage a plane surface thus causing the holders to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. In this position the untaped sides of the holders are aligned whereupon the second side is taped as previously described. The slide 35 is then grasped at the knurled end. 35 and is withdrawn from the guides 39 thus allowing the finished folder to be removed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a lantern slide folder, a plurality of rectangular lantern slide holders, each holder comprising a pair of panels, the panels of each pair aligned and spaced apart and a single bindingv strip extending along each of the opposed sides of the holders, said binding strips each engaging the adjacent edges of the holders and extending along the front and back of the holders, said binding strips also extending inwardly'between the holders and having their opposed faces in engagement between the holders to provide a hinge.
2. In an apparatus for making a folder of lantern slide holders, a member including a base and an elongated upwardly extending portion having a longitudinally extending upwardly open slot of uniform depth therein, said slot being of a width equaling that of a lantern slide holder, said slot being disposed intermediate the Width of the upwardly extending portion and extending substantially the length thereof.
3. In an apparatus for making a lantern slide folder, an elongated base having an upwardly projecting portion at each end, flanges projecting outwardly from the base at each end thereof, said flanges being of a thickness to provide shoulders above and below the flanges, said base having a slot in the upper face thereof at each end thereof, said base having spaced guide members thereon aligned with said slots and a flexible slide member slidable through said slots and said guide members.
4. In an apparatus for making a lantern slide folder, an elongated base having an upwardly projecting portion at each end, flanges projecting outwardly from the base at each end thereof, said flanges being of a thickness to provide shoulders above andbelow the flanges, said inwardly projecting portions each having a slot in the upper face thereof, said base having spaced U-shaped members thereon aligned with said slots, and a flexible slide member slidable through said slots and under said U-shaped members, the walls defining said slots at one end of the body being beveled and said slide at its forward end being rounded to engage the beveled parts, said base adjacent said beveled portions having a beveled upwardly directed surface engageable by said slide.
