The present invention relates to an apparatus for use in the manufacture of articial filaments but more specically has for its object to devise a novel means of producing laments of varying denier.
Devices for the production of denier variations in artificial threads are known in various forms. The device comprising the invention, however, is extremely simple in design and yet positive in operation whereby the particular denier variations desired'may be produced according to a controlled predetermined plan.
A variation in denier produced according to the invention may appear at regular long, or regular short intervals r at regular varying intervals, and Variations of different degree or extent,v
or both may appear at any desired interval.
The present device comprises a braking element arranged between the spinning bath and ,the take-up device for the artificial thread, this braking device may and does act intermittently upon the thread, i. e., the take-up movement of the thread over the take-up device may be either retarded or entirely interrupted while the spinning process itself continues without interruption, so that in view of the interrupted movement of the take-up device a thread is produced having enlarged portions at desired regular or irregular intervals.
The device comprising the invention may be used on pot spinning machines as well as on spool spinning machines and other types of spinning machines.
It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to devise an apparatus for producing denier variations in the nished thread which device is simple in construction and easily controlled.
Another object of the present invention is to devise an apparatus for producing denier variations which will not aiect the threads at the extrusion point as they leave the spinning nozzle.
These and other object will in part become obvious and will in part be pointed out in the following specification and appended claims ywhen taken in commotion with the attached drawing, in which,

In the drawing, in which like numerals of re'ference indicate like parts, I refers to the spinnozzle 2 from which the iilaments 3 are'extruded.
The freshly extruded thread 3 travels upwardly over a guide 4 and is thence carried over a takeup device or godet roller 5. The thread 3 is then passed fromthe godet roller 5 to any suitable collecting device 6 which may be either a spool or, as illustrated in the drawing, a spinning centrifuge.
Prior to its passage around the roller 5 the thread 3 in passing over the guide 4 is subjected intermittently to contact with a thread guide I5 supported on a lever arm 9 which is attached to a second lever arm 8 pivotally mounted at l to the frame of a spinning machine. This lever arm 8 comprises extended arms 8a and III. The
arm 8a carries a contact element I I which is contacted at intervals by pins I2 carried on a disc I3 rotating with the drive shaft I1 on which is also mounted the godet roller 5.
By reason of the counterweght I4 the normal position of the guide I5 is against the th'read guide 4 but whenever one of the pins I2 contacts the element II the guide I5 is lifted away from the guide 4 allowing the thread to be drawn over the guide 4 without retardation thereof.
Heretofore in the art it has been usual when using denier variation devices to impart an ir- -regular pull on the spread whch pull extends back to the spinning nozzle or the extrusion point of the thread where the said thread is the weakest. This practice tends to make the spinning of threads of irregular denier somewhat impractical. In the device comprising the invention, however, th'e extrusion of the filaments continues at a constant rate and a retardation in the drawing of the filaments results rather than intermittent accelerated speeds of take-up which tend to weaken the thread at the extrusion point as it issues from the spinning nozzle.
It is obvious, of course, that-the device may be constructed in such a manner that the take-up device and the pin carrying 'disc are combined.`
Further, instead of using a; pin carrying disc curved discs or grooved discs may be used, wh'ereby the lever arm 8a would be guided in the grooved disc by any suitable means suchas a pin connection.
By changing the size of the pin carrying disc' 5 and the number of pins I2` the number of swings of the lever 8 may be varied as desiredy thus resulting in a different type of thread. The swing of the lever 8 may be made irregular by 'varying the spacing of the pins I2 or by changing the construction of th'e disc itself. Por example, the 'disc may be eccentrically mounted and the take-up speed of the take-up device may be made to produce irregularities in the laments.
It is, of course, obvious that the effect of the braking device will be greater the closer it is placed to the spinneret and it is, therefore, ad-
` terms of limitation and it is intended that all equivalents be included within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus for the production of artificial threads, comprising a spinning nozzle; a take-up roller adapted to draw the' thread from said spinning nozzle; a thread guide positioned between said spinning nozzle and said take-up roller and over which the thread passes; means to intermittently retard the passage of the thread over said thread guide,- said retarding means comprising a roller mounted on a pivoted arm and to intermittently force said second mentioned roller into and out of contact with the thread las it passes over the said thread guide.
2. Apparatus for the production of rayon thread characterized by irregularly varying denier throughout its length comprising, a spinning bath, a spinning nozzle disposed therein, a driven take-up roller for collecting the thread as it issues from the spinning bath, braking means in the path of said thread between said spinning nozzle and said take-up roller, said braking means including relatively movable normally convergent gripping elements positioned in the path of movement of the th'read to grip the same' therebetween without displacement thereof from its normal path of travel to substantially stop the movement of the thread at the gripping zone, and means for intermittently separating said gripping elements, whereby when th'e gripping elements are in gripping position a nub is formed between said spinning nozzle and said braking means while the thread between said braking means and saidv roller is stretched.
