I Patented Feb. 24, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WASHI G APPARATUS Francis John Osuch, Detroit, Micln, assignor to Robot Products Corporation, Detroit, Mich, a
corporation of Michigan 7 Application December 23, 1938, serial No. 247,343
(CI. 68-53) "of the tub is disposed an agitating mechanism 2 Claims.
This invention relates to washing'apparatusand more particularly to such apparatus as is employed for washing dishes, clothes, etc.
One of the objects of my invention is to pro vide ,a combination sink and tub, with agitating mechanism in the tub for agitating Washing fluid in an improved manner, and to arrangethe agitating mechanism so as to provide forthe drainage from the sink through the tub.
Another object of my invention is to provide a washing apparatusior dishes, clothes and the' like, by forcing the washing fluid laterally from the central p rtion of the tub toward its peripheral edge and vertically upward toward the upper part of the tub and then laterally over the objects to be washed. l
Another object of my invention is, to provide a washing apparatus wherein the washing fluid is moved in two distinct paths by independent agitating devices.
' Another object of my invention is to provide an improved washing device wherein two agiv tating elements are utilized for creating two distinct movements of the washingfluids and to operate the two elements at different speeds to obtain the desired movement of the fluid.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will she-apparent from the following description, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein a preferred form of the present invention is clearly shown. a
In the drawings:
I Fig. 1 is a vertical view in cross section of an may be square, elliptical or rectangular.
designated,.in general, by the numeral 26.
As disclosedin the drawings, the tub and sink are circular, If desired, however, these parts The sink 24 is provided with an outlet in which ar placed a removable plug 32 and a perforated which apertures permit the washing fluid in the tub 20 to enter the passage 45. The agitating mechanism 26 also includes a hollow pump 44 disposed inthe, passage 45 for moving the washing fluid upwardiyiin the passage 45. The pump 44 includes ahollow tubular portion which is located below drain outlet 30 of sink 24 for conducting the. drain water from the sink through the bottom of tub 20. A funnel 52 is [secured to the .upper portion of the tubular apparatus embodying features of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig-1;
1 Fig.3 is a'view 2:1 Fig. 4 ha view taken aIOngline'4 -4 of Fig.
Fig. 5 is a schematic view of the driving mechanism embodying'features of my invention;
Fig. 6 is a verticalview in cross section of a modified form of my invention;
6, a Fri. 8 is a fragmentary view form of apparatus; and
Fig. 9 is a view taken along line 9-4 or Fig-8. Referring to the drawings, the numeral 24 designates, in general, a tub or container which per portion of tub 26 is disposed a readily removable sink or pan 24. Within the lower portiontaken along line 3 -3 "of Fig. 7 is a view taken along line 1-! of Fig.
member 50 for insuring the passage ofv the drain water .from the sink into the member 50, and
i for. the further purpose of deflecting outwardly thewashing fluid I which passes upwardly in passage45by the action of pump 44. By this arrangement, it is possible to deflect the washing fluid outwardly so that it does not come into contact with sink 24. .This causes the washing fluid tobemoved outwardly so that it moves of a modified" is connected to drainboards '22. Within the uptoward the ,outer periphery of the tub and descends uponthej. articles to be washed in the Upon the lower portion or the mechanism 26 is provided a bearing surface 56 which engages the bottom wall of tub 20. The tubular member36 is keyed to a bearing portion 60 of sprocket wheel 6| by keys 62. The bearing portion 60 ofsprocket wheel 6| surrounds the lower end of tubular member 66 and is provided with a recess 64 'for receiving the upper end of a drain connection 66 which is preierably secured to the 7 member 60 by screw threads 88. The drain'connection 66 is surrounded by a pulley wheel 12 and is keyed. thereto by keys 14. The sprocket wheel and pulley are enclosed by a supporting housing It. A bearing plate is secured to the portion rotates suitabledriving mechanism may 2 bottom wall of housing 19 The plate 99 supports sprocket wheel 9|, pulley wheel 12am! drain connection 6 has a reduced portion 84 which extends downwardly through opening 99 in plate 99" and into a fixed drain pipe 99. The reduced portion 94 prevents lateral movement of the sprocket and pulley wheels. To prevent leakage from the tub 29, I have provided packing material 99 which is compressed against bearing portion 99 and bearing portion 99 by a packing gland 9I which rotates with bearing portion 99 of sprocket 9i.
The sprocket wheel 9| is actuated by an electric motor 94 by means oipulleys 99 and I99, belt I92, small sprocket -wheel-- I94. and chain I99.
' The pulley wheel 12 is also-actuated by the elec- 9.- The drain connection 99 A hearing member I49 is secured to connection I49. This bearing engages a return bend portion I99 formed on the upper portion or pipe I49 so as to prevent any possibleupward movement of the agitating mechanism.
In Figs. 8 and 9 I have shown a modified form of construction which may be used in connection with the agitating mechanism shown in Fig. 3 to keep the agitator 99 from moving upwardly in the tub; As shown, a funnel I69 may be used. This funnel corresponds to funnel 92 but has on its lower extremity laterally extending flng'ers I61. These fingers are adapted to slide on the upper part of tubular member I69 which tric motor 94 by means of pulley H9 and beltreduction. At this time the motor 94 is operating pulley II9, belt and pulley wheel 12 to rotate the pump 44. Since the speed reduction through these pulleys is not as great as the speed reduction of sprocket wheel 9|, thepump rotates at a much greater speed than the tubular member 96. During such operation of asfollows. when I corresponds to tubular member 99. In this instance, however, the funnel surrounds tubular member I19 which corresponds to tubular member 99. If desired, the funnel I69 may be screw.
threaded to tubular member I19. By utilizing tunnel I99. with fingers I61 and rigidly attach-- ing it to tubular member I19, the fingers I91 members 44 and 99, the blades 99 tend to rnovev the washing fluid from the central portion of the tub toward the outer periphery of the tub at the same time the pump 44 moves the washing fluid upwardly whence the funnel 92 de-' fleets the fluid outwardly and over the articles to be washed.
During operation of the device, the pulley" rotates drain connection 99 because .of the looking keys I4.
portion'99 is screw threaded to drain connection 99, the tubular portion rotates with pulley 12. 'Since the tubular portion 99 is keyed to bearing portion 99 01' sprocket 9|, the tubular therewith.
In order to provide for draining the tub 29, I have provided a drain outlet II9 which may be connected to the drain pipe 99. I
In Figs. 6 and '7, I have disclosed a tub I29 and sink I24, which correspond to tub 29 and sink '24, respectively. In this embodiment of my invention, a pump I99 is rigidly connected to a vaned agitator I92 and is arranged to rotate therewith and at .thesame speed. The pump I99 includes a hollow tubular member I94 which serves as a drain pipe from the sink through the tub. A bearing I99 is secured to tubular member I94 and rests on the bottom. oi. tub I29 to seal the tub against leakage. A drain connection I49 is screw threaded to the member prevent upward movement of tubular member I99 in the event it should tend to move upwardly. Since the tubular members I16 and I99 correspond to members 99 and 96, respectively, the funnel I99 may be substituted for tunnel 92 to prevent any upward movement of the tubular member 96.
From the foregoing, it will be readily apparent that I have provided two distinct water movements, and in addition 1 have provided for different speeds of the agitating mechanism. Also, I have arranged the agitating mechanism for conducting the drainage from the sink through the tub.
Although only a preferred form of the invention has been illustrated, and that form described in detail, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications may .be made therein without departing from the spirit The reduced portion 94 rotatesin opening 99 in plate 99. Since the tubular oithe invention or from the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. Washing apparatus comprising a container, movable agitating mechanism in said container for moving washing fluid from the central portion of the container toward the periphery thereor, movable pumping means for moving washing fluid upwardly at the central portion of the container, means for causing said fluid to be moved laterally toward the periphery of the containe'r as it is discharged by said pumping means and means 101' moving said agitating and pumping means at different rotational speeds.
2. Washing apparatus comprising a tub, a
member positioned in said tubular member, im-
I94. A pulley I42 is'secured to connection I49 for rotating the actuating mechanism., Any
tuating the extends downwardly into beusedior ac- 05 peller means secured to and movable with said vertically extending member for moving washing fluid into contact with said tubular member upwardly between said two members, means for causing said fluid to be moved laterally toward the periphery of the tub after it is discharged from the top 0! said impeller means and means ,for actuating said members.
