Description
J. & H. F. GROMWELL.
Plow.
No. 2,274. Patented Sept. 25, 1841.
Am.PllUTO-LITHU. CU. N.Y-(05BORNE'S PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOS. GROMWELL AND HENRY F. OROMWELL, OF OYNTHIANA, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF WROUGHT-IRON PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2,274, dated September 30, 1841.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH OROMWELL and HENRY F. CROMWELL, of thetown ofCynthiana, in Harrison county and State of Kentueky, have invented a new and Improved Plow, which is described as follows, reference beinghadto the annexed drawings of the same, making part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction of the bar and the mode or manner of attaching or fastening it to the share.
To enable other mechanics skilled in the art of making plows to use our invention in making them, we will proceed to describe our invention and the mode or manner of constructin g it.
It consists of two pieces, the bar and the share.
The bar, represented by B, Fig. 1, and the accompanying drawings, for a two-horse plow is about twenty-two inches long on the base from the heel to the point, from four to five inches deep, and on the top of the bar, from the heel to thejunction with the share, about two inches, and about in the same proportion for larger or smaller plows. The bar, at and near the point of the share, contains agroove, G, to receive the share S, which grooveis made in the side of the bar next the mold-board and of corresponding shape of the front edge. The bar B is attached to the helve H of the plow in the usual manner by a screw bolt or bolts,
as at a. On the mold side of the land-bar are constructed two horizontal ears, E, Figs. 3, 4, perforated with round apertures to admit screwbolts 1) to pass through them and through the mold-board M, by which the mold-board and land-bar are held firmly together, the heads of said bolts 1) resting in countersinks in the outer face of the mold-board, while nuts to n are screwed on the outer side firmly against the under ends of said cars. This arrangement constitutes a part of our improvement.
The mold-board M and share S are made in one piece. The former is fastened to the standard H in the usual manner.
The plow may be of any convenient size and proportions, variable at pleasure.
The handles, beam, and standard are made in the usual manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mold-board side of the plow. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the landside of the plow. Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of the mold-board and land-bar, showing the ears of the latter. Fig. 4 is a view of the side of the land-bar next the mold-board, showing the groove therein.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts.
What we claim as our invention, and which we desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method of combining the mold-board, point, and landside or bar of the plow, as herein set forth, viz: by constructing the landside and point in one piece, detached from the moldboard, and attaching the latter to it by means of a groove in the point and ears riveted on the landside, through which bolts are passed so as to secure the whole.
