Claims.
This invention relates to quick detachable electric lamp and socket construction.
An object of this invention is to provide a quick detachableelectric lamp and socket construction,
in which the socket is provided with a splitcylindrical ring formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced inwardly projecting projections,
. and in which the lamp has a base formed with a pair of annular grooves, the base being insertable into the ring and the projections being adapted to snap into the annular groovesto detachably attach the lamp to the socket, the
socket being provided with a central contact to engage the central contact of the lamp when the projections engage within the grooves, and the lamp being adapted to be pulled out a distance suilicient to permit disengagement of the central 7 A further object of this invention is to pro-.-'
vide an improved socket and lamp construction of the character described, in which thelamp has a base which may be longitudinally inserted into the socket in any angular position of the lamp relative to the socket, so that the lamp does not have to be rotated about its axis to any particular position before insertion into the socket.
Still a further object of this invention is to 2 provide a highly improved quick detachable lamp and socket construction of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to manipulate, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a socket and lamp construction embodying the invention, with parts in cross-section and showing the lamp in dot dash lines, in a position where the terminals of the lamp are not in electrical engagement with the terminals of the socket;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the socket;
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the inner split ring inverted; and.
Fig. 4 is a side elevational View of the lamp.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, l0 designates a quick detachable electric lamp and socket construction embodying the invention, and comprising a socket H and a lamp l2 quickly detachable thereto in the manner hereinafter explained.
The socket H has a head l4 and a downwardly extending cylindrical wall I5. The head l4 may be provided with a usual switch, not shown, and within said head is a block iii of insulating material forming the top of the socket opening, and mounted thereon, is a central spring contact I! of usual construction.
Said member I6 is furthermore formed with diametrically opposed screw threaded openings receiving screws [8. The screws l8 may be connected to one terminal within the socket, where,- as, the central contact I! may be connected to the other terminal of the socket.
Within the cylindrical wall [5, is a cylindrical sleeve 20 of insulating material. Within said cylindrical sleeve 20 is a split cylindrical ring or sleeve 22 of conducting material. The sleeve 22 is formed with a longitudinal split 23, as shown in the drawing.
Extending from diametrically opposite sides of the ring or sleeve 22 are upwardly extending parallel arms 24 formed with inwardly apertured cars 25 contacting the under-surface of member [5. The ears 25 are preferably equidistant from the split 23. The screws l8 pass through the "apertured 'ears 25 and serve to attach the split inwardly extending projections 26 and 21. It will 1 be noted that the projections 26 and 21 on one side of the split are aligned with the projections on the opposite sides of the split. The sleeve 22 being attached to the screws I8, is electrically connected to one terminal of the socket.
The lamp I2 has a base'30 comprising a cylindrical wall 3| of conducting material formed with a pair of longitudinally spaced annular grooves 34 and 35. The space between the grooves 34 and 35 is equal to the projections 26 and 21. The base 30 is furthermore formed with a. central contact 36.
The lamp may be attached to the socket by pushing the base upwardly into the socket until the projections 26 and 21 snap into the grooves 34 and 35, respectively. When the projections 26 and 21 are in the grooves, the central contact I! of the socket will engage the central contact 36 of the lamp, so that th lamp will be in circuit with the terminals l1 and I8.
The split ring 2 2 is resilient to permit the base to be pushed upwardly and to furthermore permit the projections 26 and 21 to snap into the grooves.
It will be. noted that the lamp may be rotated within the socket and may be attached thereto in any angular position of the lamp about its ax1s.
The lamp may be removed from the socket by merely pulling the lamp downwardly.
Furthermore, the lamp may be electrically dis..-
connected from the socket withoutremoving the. Such operation may be' lamp from the socket. accomplished by pulling the lamp downwardly sufliciently to permit the projection 21 to snap into the groove 34. In such position, thecentral contacts I! and 36 will be disengaged. to break the electrical connections for the lampzfilament.
It will thus be seen that thereis-prov-ided a device in which-the several objects of this'invention are achieved, and: which is well adapted to-meet the conditions of practical use.
As various-possible. embodiments-might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodimentiaboveset forth, it istobeunderstood that allmatten hereinset forthor shownin the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in. a limiting sense.
Having thusdescribed my invention, 1- claim as new and desire tosecureby Letters. Patent:
1. In combination with a socket having acentral. contact connected to one terminal in; the socket, and a metal sleeve within the socket connected to the other terminal of the socket, said metal sleeve being formed with a pair of longitudinally, spaced projections, a lamp: having a base formed with anouter cylindrical. sleeve of:
conducting material,. and a central contact, the sleeve of the.- base being: formed: with a painoff annular grooves-spaced apart'a distance equal'to' the distance betweentthe projections on the sleeve Within the socket; whereby said base: may" be=inserted into the sleeve of thesocketitopermit, the projections to snap intosaid annular grooves.
2; In combination with a sockethaving a-'central contact connected; to one terminal: inv the socket, and a metal sleeve'within the socket connected to the other terminal of the socket, said:
metal sleeve being formed with a pair of long-itudinally spaced projections; a lamp having a base formed with an outer cylindricalwall of conductof annular grooves spaced: apart: a distance: equal to the distance between the projections on the sleeve Within the socket, whereby said base may be inserted into the sleeve of the socket to permit the projections to snap into said annular grooves,
said sleeve being split longitudinally.
In combination, a socket, a split cylindrical sleeve within said socket having diametrically disposed ears equiangularly spaced from the split in the sleeve, means for attaching said ears to the socket, said sleeve being formedon opposite sides of the split with a pair of longitudinally spaced, inwardly extending projections, and a lamp having a base formed with a fixed sleeve having a pair of annular grooves, said base being adapted to bepushediinto the socket, and said projections being adapted to snap. into said grooves.
4. In combination, a socket, a split cylindrical sleeve-within saidsocket having diametrically disposedears equiangularly spaced from the split in the sleeve, means for attaching said ears to the socket; said. sleevebeing; formed on each of the opposite sides of the'split' with a plurality of longitudinally spaced, inwardly extending projections,
and a lamp having a base formed with a fixed sleeve having a, plurality of annular grooves, said base-being adapted to be pushed into the socket, and said projections being adapted to snap into said' grooves, said grooves and projections being equally spaced apart and spacedequal distances from the central contacts'of said base and socket respectively, so that when the base is fully inserted into the socket, said central contacts will touchand when the lamp is pulled down a distance'suflicient for the lower projection to snap into the upper groove, the central contact. of the socketwill be disengaged from the central contact of. the base.
5; In combination with a socket having a central contact connected to one terminal of the socket and a lamp havinga base formed witha plurality of spaced; annular, external grooves, and a central contact adapted to engagethe'central contact of the socket,.ai longitudinally split sleeve withinthe socket: connected! to. the: other terminal of the socket. and-having-means1 on opposite sides-of 'the;split.for engagementwithin one or more of the grooves to retain the; central COIltRCtOff the base inengagement with: thecentral. contact of the. socket while=permitting rotation of'the-lamp relative tosthe' socket;.said* groove engaging: means being so; arranged' as to permit the lamp to be partially pulled longitudinally away from the" socket andengageable with oneof the-grooves'to retain-the lamp base within the socket with-the 'centralcontact offthe base out of engagement with respect to: the central contact of the socket.
