1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for draining the hot water systems of dwellings and the principal object in view is to provide simply constructed, easily installed means whereby both the hot and cold water pipes of such systems are drained dry throughout when the water is cut off from the water service line.
To the accomplishment of the above, and subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claim appended hereto.

Reference being had to the drawings by numerals, my improvement has been illustrated therein as embodied in a water installation system, in which I is the service line extending into the cellar 2 and terminating in a water supply cut-off valve 3 having the usual bleed drain opening 4. The cold water pipe 5 branches from the discharge end of the valve 3 and extends horizontally beneath the fioor F. A cold water feed branch 6 extends from the pipe 5 into the top of the hot water boiler l and down into the bottom of the latter. A second cold water branch 8 extends from said pipe 5 to the sink fixture 9. A third cold water branch l extends from the pipe upwardly through a wall W for the bathroom supply. The numeral I l designates the hot water pipe extending horizontally with the hot water branch l2 leading from the top of the boiler I thereto, a second hot water branch l3 extending from therefrom to the sink fixture 9 and a third hot water branch I lextending upwardly through said wall for the bathroom supply.
Intermediate the described hot and cold wate branches and the cut-off valve 3, the hot water pipe l l is connected at one end to the cold water pipe 5 by a preferably horizontally extending,
tubular, valved drain fitting 15 having its opposite ends externally threaded, as at l6, l1, said on the hot and cold water pipes II and 5 respectively. The fitting I5 is provided in the end thereof coupled with the cold water pipe 5 with a cylindrical valve chamber 20 terminating at its 5 inner end in a semi-circular valve seat 2|, said fitting having an axial counterbore 22 therein extending from said seat 2| to the other end of the fitting. A ball valve 23 is confined in the chamber 20 by a diametrical pin 24 extending through the chambered end of the fitting, said ball as best shown in Figure 5 being smaller in diameter than the diameter of the chamber 20. As will be manifest, the ball valve 23 is adapted to fit the seat 2| and to close the bore 22 by movement thereon inwardly of the fitting l5. As will also be manifest, the fitting I5 is arranged in the described system so that as long as the water is turned on and there is pressure in the cold water line 3, the ball valve 23 will be held seated by such pressure to close the fitting l5.
Referring now to the operation, when the described cut-ofi valve 3 is closed, the cold water pipe ll together with its branches 6, 8, and Ill will drain through the bleed opening 4. Pressure 25 on the ball valve 23 being relieved said ball valve will gravitate away from the seat 2| to open the fitting l5 so that the hot water pipe I I together with its branches I2, l3 and I4 may drain into the cold water pipe 5 and out of the bleed opening 4.
In the usual water system there are two drain cocks, one for the hot water side, and one for the cold water side. This results in confusion and the hot water drain cock being frequently opened while the cold water is on, with the result that a stream of water is running out of the system unknown to the tenant of a house until he subsequently discovers the situation. My invention obviates any such contingency arising since only one drain cock is required in the syswithout further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
In a water installation system, a service line for water under pressure, a cold water line, a combination cut-01f and drain valve connecting ends being turned into suitable couplings l8, I9 said line to said pipe constructed and arranged in one position to admit Water under pressure to said line and in another position to drain said line, a hot water line communicating with said cold water line through conventional water heating means and including portions at levels incapable of being drained through the cold water line, means including a pipe line connecting said hot water line to the cold water line arranged to effect drainage of the said portions of the hot water line, a check valve in said pipe line constructed and arranged to close said pipe line to flow of cold water from the cold water line to the hot water line when the cold water line is under pressure and to open when the pressure is relieved.
