2 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in adjustable holders and more particularly to adjustable holders for lipsticks and similar materials.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a superior holder of the character referred to which is convenient and reliable in operation and which may be produced at a low cost for manufacture.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable holder for lipsticks and the like having a carrier therein which is provided with a finger-piece of superior character.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the present disclosure, this invention includes all features in the said disclosure which are novel over the prior art and which are not claimed in any separate application.
In the accompanying drawing, in which certain modes of carrying out the present invention are shown for illustrative purposes:
Fig. l is a view in sidev elevation of an adjustable lipstick-holder embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the adjustable lipstick-holder but viewing the same from a. direction at a right angle to the showing of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is van elevational view corresponding to Fig. 1, save that the cap has been removed;
Fig. 4 is a view partly in Side elevation and partly in central-longitudinal section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 but on a larger scale;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the carrier or elevator detached; and
Fig. '7 is a plan view of a blank from which the carrier may be formed.
The particular adjustable lipstick-holder herein chosen for purposes of illustrating one embodiment of the present invention includes a, cupshaped body-member I0, an inverted cup-shaped cap II and a substantially-tubular carrier or elevator I2.
The cup-shaped body-member Ifi comprises a cylindrically-contoured side-wall I3 and a substantially-flat bottom-wall I4. For purposes of strength and attractiveness, the lower portion of the side-wall I3 of the said body-member I0 is provided with three (more or less) annular beads I5. Intermediate its respective opposite ends the body-member Hl is formed with a longitudinallyextending clearance-slot I6 which is closed at its per edge of the side-wall 130i the body-member I0 by means of a narrow slot I1 serving to permit the upper portion of the said side-Wall I3 to be expanded for assembly purposes.
Mounted within the cup-shaped body-member I0 with capacity for axial reciprocation therein is the carrier or elevator I2 before referred to. The said carrier or yelevator I2 is provided with an integral nger-piece generally designated by the reference character `I 8, and including a head I9 and a shank 20 which extends outwardly through the longitudinal clearance-slot I6 in the cylindrically-contoured side-wall I3 of the body-member I Il.
When the carrier or elevator l2 is-depressed into its lowermost position, as shown particularly well in Fig. 4, and in which the lower edge of the shank 2l! of its ringer-piece I8 rests against the bottom-wall of the clearance-slot I6 in the bodymember I0, the inverted-cup-shapedcap- II may be applied over the said body-member so thatv the lower edge of the said cap abuts against the upper edge of the uppermost one of the three annular beads I5 on the lower end of the said bodymember. For the purpose of clearing the outwardly-extending shank 20 of the nger-piece I8, thecap II is formed in its lower edge with a downwardly-opening clearance-notch 2| which is substantially covered, so to speak, when the said cap is in place, by thel head I9 of the ngerpiece I8.
The carrier or elevator I2 may be conveniently formed from a strip of sheet brass or other suitable material cut into a blank such as 22l shown in Fig. 7. The said blank includes a relatively- Wide body-reach indicated at 23 in Fig. 7, and at its left side as viewed in the said figure, the blank is formed with a relatively narrow and sh'ort extension which for purposes of description may be divided into two portions, namely, a shank-reach 24 and an interlocking-iinger reach 25, indicated by broken lines. At its end opposite the reaches 24 and 25 the blank 22 is formed with an extension which is narrower than the j width of the body-portion 23 thereof and which includes a shank-reach 26, a back-reach 21, a
lower end but which communicates with the upface-reach 28, and an interlocking-'ringer reach 29, the said reaches being shown as divided from each other by broken lines.
When the blank 22 by suitable forming operations is converted into the carrier or elevator I2 as particularly well shown in Fig. v6, the bodyreach 23 becomes the body-portion 23a, the shank-reach 24 of the said blank becomes a radially-extending shank-portion 24a, while the interlocking-inger reach 25 is bent outwardly in a generally tangential direction to form an interlocking-finger 25a. The shank-reach 26 of the blank 22 becomes a shank-portion 26a which extends in parallelism with and in substantial contact with the complemental shank-portion 24a before referred to. As thus formed into the completed carrier I2, the back-reach 2'! of the said blank extends in a substantial circumferential direction from the outer end of the shank-portion 26a to form a back-portion 21a for the head I9 of the finger-piece i3. 'I'he face-reach 28 of the blank 22 is folded in a reverse direction from the back-portion 27a, to form a circumferentiallycurved face-portion 23a for the head I9 of the finger-piece I8. The interlocking-lnger reach 29 of the blank 22 becomes in the finished carrier or elevator an interlocking-finger 29a reversely bent from the face-portion 28a to, in effect, clamp the interlocking-finger 25a against the rear face of the face-portion 28a.
It has heretofore been proposed to provide the carriers or elevators of lipstick-holders with integral finger-pieces, but all such prior structures have been open to numerous objections, among which may be mentioned weakness and ugly appearance. With the present construction, the .finger-piece is not only a secure and rigid extension of the body-portion of the carrier itself with which it is integral, but the said nger-piece has both actual solidity and the attractive appearance of being substantial and solid.
Y The invention may be carried out in other speciic ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and assential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming Within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
