In Switzerland January 3, 1939 f 11 Claims. 198-218) This invention relates to conveying devices, preferably for wood working, of the kind with opposed bars which are caused to grip the goods and to carry them forward and then to release the goods and to move backward into the outgoing position.
An object of the invention is to provide pressure means allowing a .desired pressure to be applied to the goods and to arrange the bars on opposed beds whose mutual distance is adjustable, in order to adjust the pressure to be applied to the goods by said pressure means.
Another object of the invention is to provide rollers engaging the bars, the rollers engaging the `bars of one bed being caused by suitable driving mechanisms to move opposed bars toward and away from one another.
Other objects and features of the invention will be apparent as the following description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an elevation of a first embodiment of the conveying device;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of this first embodiment;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line III- III of Figure 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on line lV-IV of Figure 1; on an enlarged scale.
- The machine illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 comprises a main frame consisting of standards I and longitudinal beams Ill, a lower conveying bed 2 and an upper conveying bed 3 resting on said main frame. The lower conveying bed comprises a number of bars 4 arranged close together and supported by rollers 5. The rollers of all the bars 4 are placed on bearings 6.` The bearings of the rollers of coadjacent bars can be moved in a vertical direction independent of each other; Each bearing 6 is fixed to the upper end of a rod 1, whose lower end is pivotally connected with an eccentric disc 8. The eccentric discs 8 of all the rods 1 lying in a cross plane are loosely arranged on a common cross shaft 9 carried on the longitudinal beams I0. The eccentric discs 8 of all the rods 1 belonging to the same bar 4 are each connected with the same rod I2 by means of links II. The rods 1 pass between two cross beams I3; springs I4 located between these cross beams and the bearings for the rollers press the bearings and the rollers against the bars 4. r If rod I2 (see Fig. 2) is moved to the left, the links II transmit this motion to the eccentric discs 8, which draw rods 1 with the corresponding bearings and rollers downward contrary to the effect of sprlng I4, whereby the bar 4, belonging to said rod I2, is relieved of pressure. The upper conveying bed 3 forms a frame capable of being displaced in a vertical direction and comprises a number. of bars I5 of the same l width as the lower bars 4. These bars I5 are suspended on said frame with the aid of slide members, not shown. Rollers I6, which are placed on bearings I8 attached to the cross beams l1, act on the upper bars I5. The vertical displacement of the upper bed depends on the thickness of the goods to be conveyed between the lower and the upper bars. This displacement is executed with the help of hand wheel I9 which drives four spindles 26 by means of a toothed gear 20, a longitudinal shaft 2I, bevel gears 22 and 23 and cross shafts 24 and 25. Said spindles are mounted on standards I of the main frame and engage nuts 21`of the upper, vertically movable bed. When the upper bed has been vertically displaced according to the thickness of the goods to be conveyed, said bed is clamped to the standards, in order to resist the pressure of the lower rollers.
The conveying device is operated by means of a motor 28 which drives a horizontal shaft 32 through a worm gear 29 and a bevel gear 3I and also a vertical shaft 34 with the help of a second bevel gear 33. Shaft 34 drives a lower and an upper horizontal shaft 3l and 38 .by means of two bevel gears 35 and 36. Both shafts 31 and 38 carry a number of cam discs 39 and 43 which correspond to the number of pairs of bars 4; i5. A lever 4I cooperates with each cam disc 33. This lever 4I is pivotally mounted at one end on a shaft 42 and at the other end it engages between two rollers 43 attached to the corresponding bar 4. Each cam disc 39 acts upon a roller 44 of the cooperating lever 4 I. Y
In the same way a lever 46, pivotally mounted at 45, is provided for each cam disc 40 and engages between two rollers 41 mounted on the corresponding upper rail I5 and carries a roller 49 cooperating with said cam disc 40. Springs 50, 5I act upon each bar 4, I5, respectively, and tend to pull the bars to the left and, in this way, to press the rollers 44, 49 against the cam discs 39, 40 respectively. The rotation of the cam discs 39 and 40 causes the reciprocating movement of the bars, that is, the bars are forced to the right by the cam discs and to the left by the springs. The cam discs are so disposed on their shafts that every two bars arranged one above the other move together, while the cams of coadjacent cam discs are displaced in relation to each other, so that some of the bars move forward while the others move backward at the same time. The sequence of the motions of the bars is chosen so that not more than two non-adjacent pairs of bars ever move simultaneously to the right, i. e., contrary to the feed motion of the goods.
The lower horizontal shaft 32 likewise carries cam discs 52 whose number corresponds to that of the pairs of bars of the conveying device. Each of these cam discs cooperates with a roller 53 attached to a lever 55, which is pivotally fixed at 54. Each lever 55 is, at its lower end, pivotally connected with one of the bars I2 operating the eccentric discs 8. The springs I4 force the rods 1 upwards and the rod I`2 to the right, so
that the rollers 53 are pressed against the cam' discs 52. During each revolution of a cam disc the cooperating rod I2 is pushed once to the left, whereby the rods 'I with the rollers 5 are pulled downwards and the corresponding bar is relieved. rI'he cam discs 52, 39 and 453 are set in such relation to one another that the pressure is released from the bars during their backward, i. e. during their right hand motion.
A longitudinal rail 56 is pivo-tally fixed to the upper driving lever 46 of each .bar I5. This longitudinal bar runs above the bearings I8 belonging to each bar I and has key faces 51, each of which cooperates with one of the bearings I3 of the rollers. When the rail 56, under the effect of the cam disc 4D, is pulled to the right, i. e., backward, the key faces, lying between the bearings and the cross girders I'I, also move to the right, so that the pressure is released from the bearings of the rollers. During the left-hand motion of the bars the key faces are pushed between the cross girders I'I and the bearings I8, whereby the rollers are pressed against the bars I5.
The goods entering between the lower and upper .bars are gradually conveyed to the end of the machine by these reciprocatorily moving bars.
In the above described embodiment the bars, on their forward motion, exercise a pressure on the goods which suces for glueing the several wood plates. If only the locomotion of the goods were in question, a considerably smaller pressure would be necessary than in the above case, or even the mere weight of the bars would be suicient. 'Ihe pressure is released from the bars during their backward motion, so that they in no case hinder the feed motion of the goods.
Longitudinal bores 59 are provided in the` bars of the conveying beds, said bores serving for the circulation of a heating medium. At the end of the conveying device circular saws, cutting in the direction of the feed motion,- may be provided, adapted to divide the outgoing goodsy into the desired widths. Another circular saw, portable in the cross direction, may be arranged at the end of the device, in order to cut the goods into the desired lengths.
At the inlet side of the conveying machine a glue spreading device may be` provided.
The gradient of the key faces 5l is preferably decreased towards the end of the conveying device, in order to reduce ythe pressure on the goods to a lesser degree towards the end of the device, where the setting of the glue takes place.
The shape of the cam discs 39 and 4@ is such that the backward motion is performed at a higher speed than the forward motion, in order to set the goods free from the pressure but only for a short time.

What I claim is: 1. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, suitable operating means for said bars whereby two opposed bars are caused to move forward and backward, rollers for engaging the bars, adapted to move opposed .bars toward and away from one another for pressing and releasing the goods to be conveyed, suitable adjusting means for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between said opposed beds according to the thickness of the goods to be conveyed and the pressure to be applied to the goods by said rollers.
2. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, suitable operating means for said bars whereby two opposed bars are caused to move forward and backward, suitable pressure means capable'of pressing the bars against the goods, threaded spindles for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between said opposed beds according to the thickness of the goods to be conveyed and the pressure to be applied to the goods by said pressure means, and suitable driving means for operating said threaded spindles.
3. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, suitable operating means for said bars whereby two opposed bars are caused to move forward and backward, rollers for engaging said bars, movable supporting means for the rollers engaging the bars of one bed, said supporting means being adapted to move the bars of said one bed toward and away from the 15,' bars of the other bed, driving mechanisms adapted to reciprocate said supporting means, and threaded spindles for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between said opposed `beds according to the thickness of the goods to be vconveyed and the pressure to be applied to the goods by said rollers.
4. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, suitable operating means for'said bars whereby two opposed bars are caused to move forward and backward, rollers for engaging said bars, movable supporting means for the rollers engaging the bars of one bed, said supporting means being adapted to move the bars of said one bed toward and away from the bars of the other bed, and driving mechanisms adapted to reciprocate said supporting means, said mechanisms comprising separate rods for each bar, means for pivotally connecting said rods with said supporting means, and cam discs each adapted to drive one of said rods.
5. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, rocking levers, each adapted to engage one of said bars for driving the bars forward, springs adapted to act upon said bars contrary to the effect of said rocking levers, cam discs each adapted to cooperate with one of said rocking levers for reciprocating said bars, suitable pressure means capable of pressing the bars against the goods, and suitable adporting means for the' justing means for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between said opposed beds according t0 the thickness of the goods to be conveyed and to the pressure to be applied to the goods by said pressure means.
6. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, rocking levers, each adapted to engage one of said bars for driving the bars forward, springs adapted to act upon said bars contrary to the effect of said rocking levers, cam discs each adapted to cooperate with one or said rocking levers for reciprocating said bars, rollers for'engaging said bars, movable suprollers engaging the bars of one bed, said supporting means being adapted to move the bars of said one bed toward and away from the bars of the other bed, and driving mechanisms adapted to reciprocate said supporting means, said mechanisms comprising separate rods for each bar, means for pivotally connecting said rods with said supporting means, and other cam discs each adapted to drive one of said rods.
7. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, the bars of each bed being placed side by side at a distance from one another which is smaller than the width of each bar, suitable operating means for said bars whereby two opposed bars are caused to move forward and backward, suitable pressure means v capable of pressing the bars against the goods, threaded spindles for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between vsaid opposed beds according to the thickness of the goods to be conveyed and the pressure to be' applied to the goods by said pressure means, and suitable driving means for operating said threaded spindles.
8. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, suitable operating means for said bars whereby two opposed bars are caused to move forward and backward, members for engaging the bars, adapted to move Aopposed bars toward and away from one another for pressing and releasing the goods to be conveyed, suitable adjusting means for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between said opposed beds according to the thickness of the goods to be conveyed and the v pressure to be applied tothe goods by said members.
9. In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, suitable operating means for said bars whereby two opposed bars are caused to move forward and backward, suitable pressure means capable of pressing the bars against the goods, separate means for retracting the bars from engagement with the goods, and suitable adjusting means for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between said opposed beds according tol the thickness of the goods to be conveyed and to the pressure to be applied to the goods by said pressure means.

In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, suitable operating means for said bars whereby two opposed barsl are caused to move forward and backward, means including resilient pressing elements for pressing the bars against the goods and separate means for retracting the bars from engagement with the goods, and suitable adjusting means for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between said opposed beds according' to the thickness of the goods to be conveyed and to the pressure to be applied to the goods by said pressure means.

In a device for conveying goods having opposed beds comprising bars, suitable operating means for said bars whereby two opposed bars are caused to move forward and backward, resilient means for pressing the bars of one bed against the goods, positive means for retracting Said bars from engagement with the goods, means for pressing the bars of the other bed against the goods, and suitable adjusting means for connecting said beds, adapted to adjust the mutual distance between said opposed .beds according to the thickness of the goods to be conveyed and to the pressure to be applied to the goods by said pressure means.
