The invention relates to improvements in display cases especially adapted for displaying and distributing books in schoolrooms, the primary object of the invention being the provision of a simple unitary display case of the character indicated which is capable of economical production and highly efilcient in use.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists of the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig, 1 is a front view of a display case embodying the invention;

Fig. 2 a side view thereof;

Fig. 3 a top plan view thereof;

Fig. 4 a vertical section taken substantially on line 46 of Fig. 1; and

Fig. 5 an enlarged partial horizontal section taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 1.

The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises amain section having a rear wall l0 provided with a number of horizontal shelves I l for the accommodation of books or the like.

At each end of the main section a forwardly extending wall [2 i provided which extends the full height of the main section but is stepped at its forward end, as best shown in Fig. 2. Each of the walls 12 also carries horizontal shelves l3 arranged on its inner side in registration with the corresponding shelves H in the main section, as indicated, thereby providing additional shelving for books or the like. At the outer ends of the shelves l3 vertical stop walls l4 are provided which extend slightly above the shelves I3 and downwardly to the shelf below, thereby providing pockets or recesses I5 in which individual books may be stood for convenient display and distribution. At the bottom a shallow wall M is arranged around the outer edges as indicated to form the lowermost pocket or recess I5. Filing drawers l6 are arranged at the ends and between the shelves I l of the main section of the case for the reception of suitable index or reference cards case is provided which is especially adapted for use in school classrooms as a unit of a general school library; that includes a drawer filing system for card catalogs relating thereto; that facilitates the arrangement of many books in compact space and adequately displayed; that is readily movable as desired; that permits of the P display and use of books as a unit of a general library for individual classroom purposes; and which is of simple construction, capable of economical production, and highly eflicient in use for the purposes intended.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying the invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed but desire to avail myself of such modifications and variations as fall within the scope of the appended'claims.

I claim:

1. A construction of the class described comprising a rear wall having a plurality of shelves on its front face; side walls extending forwardly from the ends of the said rear wall and having shelves on their inner faces registering with the shelves on the rear wall, there being drawer openings at the rear edges of said side walls opposite the spaces between said shelves; and drawers inserted in said openings.

2. The construction specified in claim 1 in which the outer edges of the side walls are stepped, the side shelves are of gradually increasing length from the top downwardly and stop walls are arranged at the outer ends of the side shelves to extend slightly above them and downwardly to the shelves below.
