CAROLINE D. COLLINS, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,097, dated May 4, 1880.
' Application filed November 17, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAROLINE DRAKE 00L- LINs, of Lebanon, of the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of a shoe provided with my improvement. Fig. 3 is a top View of the removable tap-sole. Fig. 4 is a view of the bottom of the shoe with its portion of the tapsole fastening. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastening-key.
My invention consists, first, in the combination of a boot or shoe with a removable tapsole and appliances, as set forth, for readily connecting the tap-sole to the shoe and admitting of the separation of such tap-sole from the shoe; second, in the removable tapsole as provided at its toe with the shoe-toe socket and at the opposite end with the metallic key-receiver, as set forth; third, in a shoe or boot provided on its sole with a metallio key-receiver, as set forth, for aiding in fastening to the shoe or boot, by means of a metallic key, as described, a removable tapsole, as set forth.
The object of my invention is not only to save wear of the main sole of a shoe or boot, but to enable a tap-sole to be readily fixed thereto and removed therefrom as occasion may require.
In the drawings, A denotes a shoe having extended across its sole, at the front part of the shank thereof, a metallic key-receiver, B, which consists of a narrow strip of metal having a dovetail groove, a, extending through it lengthwise, as shown. The sole is grooved transversely to receive the receiver. B, which is secured to the sole by screws b b.
A similar receiver, 0, is similarly fixed to and arranged with the removable tap-sole E, the said two receivers B and 0 being to engage with a duplex dovetailed key, D, formed in transverse section, as represented, such key, on being forced into both of the receivers, serving with them to connect the tap-sole at its inner end to the sole of the shoe, the said tap-sole being at its front end provided with a toe-tip or socket-piece, F, to receive the toe of the shoe in manner as shown.
The toe-tip and the receivers and key serve to connect the tap-sole to the shoe, from which it may be readily disconnected after and by removing the key from the two receivers. The key is to fit to the receivers with sufficient friction to prevent it from accidentally working out of place while the shoe may be in use.
From the above it will be seen that with a shoe or a boot provided with a removable tap sole and appliances, as described, or their equivalents, for connecting it to the shoe, the tap-sole can be used to preserve the shoe-sole from wear, and when such tap-sole may become worn, so as to be rendered unserviceable, it may be easily removed from the shoe by the wearer and another or fresh one substituted; or the shoe may be worn with or without the tap-sole, as occasion may require.
I do not claim a shoe having a tap-sole permanently fastened to it either by cement, nails, pegs, or stitching.
, What I claim as myinvention is as follows, viz:
1. The removable tap-sole provided at its toe with the shoe-toe tip or socket-piece and at its inner end or part with the metallic key-receiver, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the key and its two receivers, as described, with the shoe and the tap-sole and with the toe-tip or socket extending from the said tap-sole, as set forth.
MRS. CAROLINE DRAKE COLLIN S.
Witnesses R. H. EDDY, W. W. LUNT.
