My invention relates broadly to seat covers, and more particularly to a seat cover wherein the construction is unique to, upon occasions, permit the same to be used as a bag for carrying various articles.
An important object of my invention is to provide a seat cover that will have the appearance of a conventional shopping bag when inthe closed or folded position and that may be readily utilized as a seat cover when in the open or extended position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a seat cover having a portion thereof adapted to function as a back-rest cover portion and a portion adapted to overhang the forward edge of a seat to protect the legs of the user.
Yet another object of my invention is the provision of a seat cover wherein the outer covering comprises a suitable water proof material which will prevent moisture from penetrating the main body of the cover, thus permitting the said cover to be placed on a damp or wet support.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of a seat cover of the above-mentioned character wherein the back-rest cover portion is uniquely formed to provide a pocket wherein suitable articles such as magazines, or the like, may be carried.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a seat cover of the above-mentioned character that is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawing, forming a part of this specication, and in which like numerals are employed i to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodying my invention, illustrating the same in the closed or folded position,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same in the open or extended position,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View, taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional formation and wherein the seat and back mem-l bers are connected by a constricted medial hinge portion I3.
The outer cover I4 may be formed from any suitable waterproof material and comprises the cover for both the back-rest and seat members when the same are in the folded or extended position. A backing strip I5 of a lighter material is placed in superimposed relation on the cover I4 with its side edges spaced slightly inwardly from the edge of the cover, and with the ends I5 and II extending a substantial distance beyond the ends I8 and I9 of the cover, respectively. Pads 20 and 2| are secured to the inner surfaces of the backing strip I5 and include identical back and front pieces 22 and 23 having a layer of a suitable padding material 24 and 25 such as cotton, or the like, interposed therebetween. The layers of fabric I4, I5, 22 and 23 are positioned in superimposed relation and the projecting marginal edge of the cover I4 is folded inwardly and inserted under the edges of the substantially smaller pieces I5, 22 and 23. The
folded marginal `edge of the cover comprises an essentially stiff surrounding bead for the bag and the several pieces are united by a line of stitching 26 except at the upper end of the cover. The padding 24 and 25 terminate a slight distance from the middle portion I3 of the cover and lines of stitching 2'I and 28 hold the same securely positioned at their respective ends. If desired, a tacking stitch 29 may be used to aid in holding the padding 24 and 25 evenly distributed in their respective sections. A peripheral stiffening rod 29 isV positioned between the pieces 23 and 22 at the end of the cover comprising the back member II. The end 30 of the pieces 22 and 23 are stitched together and the backing strip I5 is stitched to the cover I4 to define a pocket 3| therebetween. Handles 32 and 33 are stitched to the free ends of sections I2 and I I, respectively, as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 3.
As illustrated in Figure 4, the portion of the cover between the transverse rows of stitching 2'I and 28 are disposed in superimposed relation with each other and comprises a flexible section which permits the back and seat members II and I2 to be folded one upon the other.
My device is particularly adapted to be used on such occasions as football games, or similar sporting events which take place during the fall or winter months, and wherein the spectator is usually seated on a bare wooden bench, or the like. It is obvious that the utility of the cover is not restricted to the above-mentioned example but that it may be used on beach parties, hiking trips, boating trips, or upon any occasion where a device of this nature may have utility.
A magazine, or the like, may be placed in the pocket 3l and when the flap I6 is folded inwardly upon the back-rest cover member I I and ap I'I is folded inwardly upon the seat cover member I2 the said members II and I2 may be folded upon each other to bring the handles 32 and 33 into juxtaposition, as illustrated in Figure 3. In this position the device resembles a. handbag and may be easily and conveniently carried. When in the extended position the device is particularly adapted as a seat covering wherein the member I2 is placed on the seat and the member II is lifted upwardly and permitted to rest against the back of the seat; the flap or drop I'I may be pulled outwardly and permitted to hang over the front of the seat to protect the hose or legs of the user. The peripheral stiffening rod 29' will hold the backrest in the desired position and will prevent the same from crumpling or folding. The waterproof construction of the cover I4 will prevent moisture and cold from penetrating the members Il and I2 and will permit the device to be conveniently utilized during wet or rainy weather, offering adequate protection for the user. If desired, the cover I4 may have an attractive design on its outer surface to give the same a smart and attractive appearance when carried in the folded position in simulation of a handbag.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A seat cover comprising seat and back members having a common side and adapted to be 'folded one upon the other, a pad secured in superimposed relation to the inner surface of the seat member, a pad positioned in superimposed relation to the inner surface of the back member and having the greater portion of its margin secured thereto but leaving a comparatively smaller portion unattached to the said back member to define a pocket therebetween, a stiffening frame circumventing the back member pad to hold the same erect when the cover is in the open position, a flap comprising an eXtension of the seat member adapted to extend over the forward edge of the seat, and a flap comprising an extension of the back member adapted to be folded inwardly against the back pad and to close the said pocket. l
