SCISSORS OR THE LIKE Filed Aug. 12, 1940 In venior A ttorneys Patented Jan. 13, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SCISSORS OR THE LIKE Ernest Hardin, Ardmore, Okla.
Application August 12, 1940, Serial No. 352,300
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in scissors, shears, or the like, whereby the manual operation of scissoring or shearing is rendered more efficient and easy, and accurate, with considerably less effort than is required for the same operations in using conventional shears.
Important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description and the appended drawing, wherein are shown preferred embodiments of my invention for illustrative purposes.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general side elevational view of a scissors or shears in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is an opposite side elevational View of a slightly modified form.
Referring in detail to the drawing and first to the embodiment shown in Figure 1, which is generally designated by the numeral 5, the numeral 6 designates the usual screw pivot which connects the scissors or shear blades I and 8 in overlapping relation, the blades having handles 8' and 9, respectively, extending on the opposite side of the pivot. In ordinary scissors or shears the cutting edges 10 and II of the respective blades are substantially straight, whereas in the present invention these edges are divergently curved at an angle of divergence ranging from one degree to 35 degrees and as high as 40 degrees, and the handles 8' and 9 are similarly divergently curved at a similar angulation to that provided for the cutting edges l and II. In addition, the shoulders l2 and [3 at the juncture of the handles with the blades at the handle side of the pivot 6 are cut away at a sufficiently sharp angle and to a sufficient extent to permit the full closing or occlusion of the terminal portions of the cutting edges l0 and II by closing the handles 8' and 9.
By reason of the arrangements described the cutting action can begin at the very inner terminals of the cutting edges I0 and H where the leverage factor of the handles 8 and 9 is greatest. Further, the cutting action acts with substantially increased power over ordinary shears or scissors right along the cutting edges I0 and II as far as the terminals [4 and I of these cutting edges as the handles are brought together, correct angulation of the cutting edges obtaining for most eflicient cutting and easy operation throughout the entire length of the cutting edges as the handles are brought together.
In the modified formshown in Figure 2 of the drawing both of the handles Ba and 9 are not completely divergently ofiset as in the case of the above described embodiment, but the handle 9 is curvedly displaced somewhat toward the handle 8a, while the cutting edge IOa of the blade 1a corresponding to the handle 9 has the same divergent curvature with respect to the cutting edge II a of the blade 8a. Further, the arrangement of shoulders such as the shoulders l2 and I3 is eliminated by having the blades 8 a and la strictly in side by side arrangement, with the terminals 150, and I ia both pointed or leafshaped instead of having the terminal M of the first described embodiment angularly truncated as indicated by the numeral 14. The arrangement of the second described embodiment provides in a slightly modified type of shears, the essential features of operation and efiicient mechanical advantage provided for in the first described embodiment.
Although I have shown and described herein preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto except as may be required by the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
Shears or the like constructed with a departure from the normal by having the blades thereof curved longitudinally for the full length of the blades; said blades being curved away from each other in opposite directions from the pivotal point of the blades toward the terminals of the blades whereby, upon closing of the blades in initiating a cutting action such cutting action will begin immediately at the point of the pivotal connection of the blades so that the cutting edges of the blades for the full length thereof are availed of in effecting the cutting operation, the handles of the shears having divergence with respect to each other similar to the divergence of the blades.
