STEAM- SPEGIFIGATION ionizing part of Letters 1* TYRONE, ARKANSAS.
PLOW.
Patent No. 226,921, dated April 27, 1880.
Application tiled March 16, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, if-nouns ii. Momm of Tyrone, in the county of Gross and State of Arkansas, have illVOlllUtl certain Improve ments in Steam Rotary Plows, oi which the ibilowing is a speciiication.-
This invention relates to certain improvements in steam-plows; and it consists in the general construction oi. the whole machine; also, in the form of the plow teeth or points, in the combination of the apparatus for raising and .iowerinc' the plow-cylinder, and the means whereby the cylinder is sustained in the frame, all or which will be more particularly herein" i'ter described.
Figure l a side elevation of the machine. hi L is a plan View. Figs. 3, i, and 5 are details of the sm'ei-al parts of the plow-cylin- (101' and lif'i'ing lcvcrs.
The ii unw which supports the whole apparatus, nsn. y made of rolled wrought-iron of siniicicnt width and thickness, having a ihingc on each oil on the ontsid'es of the frame and put together snbsta'mtially with iron rods or bolts.
The main shnit 15 is stationary. The intermediate shaft, (,1, is also stationary, and they are both turned oil", and apiece, a, is bored out and iittrd on the ends 01; said shafts, with anges extending on either side and bolted to the Hang; .s on the frame A, to serve as bearings orjonrnals for the shafts B and (l.
The frame is bent inwardly in front until the two side bars come nearly together at the frontend at A, between which a piece of iron or wood, A, is bolted. They may also be arched npnard to allow the front wheels to pass'nnderin making short turns. The other or rear ends of the side frames are turned up, as at 21 to support the shaft 1), for hoisting or lowering the plow-cylinder P.
There are two iron bars, a a, fastened on the inside, which extend across the bottom of the frame A, on which the water-tank D and the platform I) are supported.
The cylinder 1 is composed of 'a number of wheels or centers of the proper diameter, each one being wide enough on the periphery to allow two rows of teeth or plow-points to be iastened in it, and it is made of cast or malleable iron, having slots or holes cast in t for the insertion of the teeth 12. Therims of these wheels must be wide and deep enough to support the said teeth, having a semicircular space, 12', on each side thereof, opposite each plow point or tooth, to admit of a set-screw, p", by which the teeth will be more securely fastened. These wheels or'eenters are bored out and fitted on and keyed to shai'tl, the key-seats being so arranged, if desired, that the wheels may be fastenedon the shaft with the plow-points running in spiral or parallel lines with the shaft, and the plow-points must be three or more inches apart. Each wheel is to have two rows of teeth in it, around the .same .-w ithfrom sixto thirtyrows therein andr the plow-points are to be so arranged that those in every alternate row, as the cylinder revolves, will pass directly in the middle of the space between the teeth in the preceding row, and thus break and pulverize all of the ground.
' The levers E, in which the cylinder-shaft is sustained and revolves, are of wrought or malleable iron or of steel, and large enough to admit of the shaft 0 passing. through their ends, and on which shaft 0 they are hinged, and they have a boss on each side, through whichis an orifice for the ends of the'cylindershaft P. At the outer ends there are segments F F, with cogs to mesh with the cogs of'pinion-wheels F F on the transverse shaft '1), supported in upturned part of frame A, by which the segments are raised or lowered, and consequently lifting or lowering the cylinder P, which revolves in the lovers E E.
Behind each pinion F F is a beveled wheel,
F F, which meshes with a similar wheel. 'F F, on the ends of the sloping shafts H H, having similar beveled wheel-s h h at their upper ends, meshing-with beveled wheels on bearings of the shaft (3 to the top' of the upturned end of frame A. These plates L L are the two ends of a-transverse shaft, It, sup- The shape of the plow points or teeth is as.
follows: From the point Where they emerge from the surface of the wheel or center they are set back'or bent to an angle of from a twelfth to sixth of the-circumference formed by their extreme outward points,- and from four to sir inches from the outer endthey'must be bent forward toan'angle of about forty five'd'eg're'es, and grad uallytapered to a sharp point. The object in bending them backward is to assist in clearing the points of all dirt, trash, &c., and the points are bent forward, that they'may enter the ground early. The plow-points are fastened in the'i'vheels or centers by-a key on the front edge, which is made secure by a set-screw inthe apertures in the wheels, heretofore described. The keys have heads formed on them to be readily removed thereby.
, "lhe'machinc is placedpn'fo'ur wheels, 0 O O 0, of suitablediameters, and'shonld be wide on the tread to support the heavy weight on soft ground. The main shaftB must be bent to support the boiler M. The engine-cylinders X X are fastened to the upper part of the boiler M. The main driving-wheels 0 O are sup-' cylinder is connected to the piston-rod in the usnal'mamier, and the crankshaft O is driven iron: the cylinders X X, and thedriving-pinions on the ends of crank-shaft O mesh with the cogs inside of the rim oft-he driving-wheels O "and props! -them fin-ward. wheels N N, which are lixed on the hnbsoi' wheels 0 0 and revolve with them, work into the pinionsc e on shaft (,2. There are also cog-wheels G on shaft 0, which mesh with pinionsc c on the ends of shaft P of the plow-eylinder. When motion is communicated to the crank-shaft (J, and the frame is moved ahead at the same time by the train of wheels just described above, rapid motion is communicated to the plow-cylinder, and the ground thoroughly pulverized by the rotary action of the teeth or plow-points, and the depth to which they are to be driven is governed by the apparatus consistingof the shaft R, supported on the watcr-tank,- the beveled gearing at its two ends operating'upon the in-.
clined shafts H H, which operate by beveled gearing at their lower ends upon the transverse shaft I), on which are pinions F F, which operate upon the segment-racks F on the ends ofthe-levers E E, which sustain the shaft of the plow-cylinder P. These movements are under the control of the driver by means of a hand-wheel, Gr. Near his band is also another hand-wheel, It, which is on the top ofa vertical rod, r, at the bottom of which is a cogged wheel, 1', which works in a segment-rack on the inner end of the frame, on which is the axle of the front wheels, 0 0, so that the driver can control the direction of the forward wheels for steering the plow in any direction.
- I claim l. The steam rotary plowing-machine consisting' of the frame A, the driving and gear wheels, whereby the plow-cylinder is rotated, the means fbr operating thelevers E E, which sustain the plow cylinder, consisting of the transverse shafts It and b, with their beveled gears, theside shafts, H H, the pinions F F, and segments F F, all combined substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The teeth or plow-points bent backward from the centers, and having their points hooked, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
3. The levers E E, pivoted on the shaft (J, having at their ends segment-racks F, in conr bination with the cylinder P and pinion F, as shown and described.
4. The combination of the shafts R H l1 0, with their connecting beveled gears, the pinioiis F 1*", and segment-racks F F,guide-1: lates L L, and cylinder 1, substantially as and forv the purpose described. p, t
